Osaki Kamijima Henro 大崎上島遍路 / 大崎上島八十八ヶ所お遍路

- quote -
OSAKIKAMIJIMA TOWN - Ōsakikamijima
Osakikamijima is a town consisting of 20 islands of varying sizes. Looking out over the Seto Inland Sea from the summit observation deck of Kannominesan Mountain (453m), visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of 115 interspersed islands. Kinoe Onsen is a popular spot where guests can sit back and relax while watching boats passing through the archipelago.
As well as a rich variety of fruit, including mandarin oranges, blueberries, strawberries, and figs, Osakikamijima has invested effort in developing a fishing industry that not only "catches" but "cultivates" produce.
- source : hiroshima-navi.or... -

- quote -
Osaki-kamijima 大崎上島
Osaki-kamijima 大崎上島 he Osaki Islands consists of four islands: Osaki-kamijima, Osaki-shimojima, Kami-kamagarijima, Shimo-kamagarijima now known for their slow pace of life and cultivation of fruits: blueberries, lemons, mikan oranges. Many of the younger population have left, schools have closed and the islands are gradually depopulating.
The Shimanami Kaido makes a large turn on Omishima Island, extending southward to Shikoku. This of course makes far better commercial sense, as a means to flow goods and materials to the larger population base there. But geographically speaking, the road could have continued its gradual bend to the west, connecting across a chain of islands all the way to Kure.
It takes nearly as much time to pronounce the names of the islands as it does to traverse them: Osaki-kamijima, Osaki-shimojima, Kami-kamagarijima, Shimo-kamagarijima. You'll note the repetition in the words 'kami' and 'shimo,' upper and lower respectively. The kami islands are closer to Kyoto and therefore considered the superior. Yet ironically, they seemed the least healthy economically of the four.

Shoogenji 松源寺 Shogen-Ji - Nakano, Takada
蒼龍山 Soryuzan 松源寺 Shogenji
Sarudera さる寺 "Monkey Temple"

中野区上高田1-27-3 / Tokyo, Nakano ward, Kami-Takada

The Kannon statue was carved by 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi.

Near the main gate is a stone statue of a monkey.
Legend tells us:
Once 徳門和尚 priest Tokumon wanted to board a river crossing boat, when a monkey came and held him back by his robes.
He could not board the boat, but then saw it sinking down.
Thanks to the monkey he had been saved.

The Zen priest Fusho 勅諡靈鑑普照禅師 founded the temple in the Chiyoda ward.
It was relocated to 牛込神楽坂 Ushigome Kagurazaka in 1613.
It became the clan temple under 戸田忠昌 Toda Tadamasa (1632 - 1699).
In 1909 it was relocated again to the present place.
It became Nr. 21 in the 通寺町 Kayoiteramachi and was a sub-temple of 妙心寺 Myoshin-Ji.

Tenryuuji, Tenryūji 天龍寺 Tenryu-Ji - Shinjuku
護本山 Gohonzan 天龍寺 / 天竜寺 Tenryuji

新宿区新宿4-3-19 / Shinjuku

The main statue is Senju Kannon 千手観音 with 1000 arms

- quote
Tenryuji Temple is a burst of Edo Period history.
Like its cousin in Ueno, Tenryuji Temple's Bell of Time - known as toki no kane in Japanese - was used to keep time for the citizens of old Edo. The bell also served as a reminder for the customers of the nearby 'pleasure quarters' to leave the premises...
Established at the end of the 16th century,
the temple is closely associated with the Tokugawa Shogunate and was connected with the family temple of the father of Lady Saigo, Tokugawa Ieyasu's trusted concubine. Perhaps because of such political connections, a number of the temple's older features are still extant. The Bell of Time, now a Cultural Property of the city, of course still stands as does the romon-styled temple gate. Both structures are easily recognised by their distinctive designs, completely at odds with the modern buildings around them.
A cemetery can be found here and if you can, take note of the surrealistically aged tombstone markings and the standing Jizo statues.
The main hall of the temple, though a modern concrete-reinforced structure, is robustly handsome with crisp, clean designs.
Just outside of the temple at its base stands a statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.
