Choofukuji 長福寺 Chofuku-Ji, Shimobuse
Chofukuji
757 / Chiba, Isumi city, Shimobuse

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.
The statue was made in the Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573).
During a fire in the Edo period, the face and many parts of the body became black.
The halo behind the statue was made in the Edo period.
Beside the main statue are two kneeling deities,
Seishi Bosatsu.

The statue of 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai is 101 cm high.
At his side are statues of
Bishamon Ten.

The temple was founded in 807 by 伝教大師 Dengyo Daishi.
. Saicho, Dengyo Daishi
It burned down many times, so not many records from old times remain.
When 源頼朝 Minamoto no Yoritomo stayed at the temple and wrote a letter,
he used suzuri 硯 an inkstone, which was very beautiful.
So he gave the temple the name 硯山 Suzuriyama "Inkstone Temple".
In the compound was a huge maki no ki 槙の木 Maki pine tree
where Yoritomo placed his writing brush and thus the tree was called
fudekake no maki 筆掛の槙 "Maki pine tree where the brush was placed".

Yoritomo also had a black horse 磨墨 which he loved much,
and when it died, they built 磨墨の墓 a stone marker on its grave.

At the temple gate are two statues of 仁王 Nio.
If people rub their legs or other parts of their hurting body, they will get healed.
ashi sasuri no Nio-Sama

In the Edo period, this powerful temple had many sub-temples and many parishioners.
