Kanbodaiji Kannon Shimagahara

The Kannon statue is a standing 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon with 11 Faces
dating to the early Heian Period (around 900).
It is 227 cm tall and kept in a small shrine as a secret statue.
It is shown once every 33 years.

おん まか きゃろにきゃ そわか

The temple was founded in 751 by 多紀内親王 Imperial Princess Taki (? - 751).
The princess died the same year.
In 752, the priest 実忠和尚 Jitchu renovated the temple and built 観音堂 a Kannon Hall.
The hall was later known as 正月堂 Shogatsu-Do Hall.
Around it were rich rice fields.
The temple had many buildings, but all were lost in fires.
In 楼門 the Tower Gate there are two standing statues of
広目天 Komoku-Ten and 多門天 Tamon-Ten.
These two statues are important culturel assets of the temple.

The temple was founded as a clan temple in 1616 by 藤堂高虎 Lord Todo Takatora (1556 - 1630),
who had come from 今治藩 Imabari to 伊勢津 Tsu in Ise.
It is a special 祈祷寺院 prayer temple in 伊賀 Iga,
to pray for healing of an eye disease of the lord.

The Kannon statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu.
It was possibly a trial statue for the Hasedera in Nara.
Also called 柳谷観世音 Yanagidani Kanzeon

The temple was founded around 740.

In the compound is 聖天堂 a Hall for the deity Shoten.

In the compound is 宝篋印塔 a Hokyoin pagoda tower.

In 1922, 石造十三重塔 a stone pagoda with 13 tires was erected.

a Shrine for 白龍王神 the White Dragon Deity and
a Shrine for 八大龍神 the Eight Great Dragon Kings were made.

In the compound was a huge 松の大木 Matsu pine tree of more than 400 years,
which fell down during the typhoon in 1961.

The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.
薬師如来三尊 It has two side statues.

おん ころころ せんだり まとうぎ そわか

The temple was founded around 1700 by 中興法印重学 Priest Jugaku.
The temple is also called Tsuge no O-Daishi san 柘植のお大師さん or
kakke fuuji no o-tera 脚気封じのお寺 A temple to heal Beriberi.
The priest 快遍上人 built it to heal people suffering during an epidemic.
The head priest of the Shrine 日置神社 Hioki Jinja, 平宗清 Taira no Munekiyo
made it a special temple for ritual prayers for healing.
In 1581, during the fighting in Iga, the temple was lost to fire,
but priest 実恵 Mie rebuilt it.
Around 1650, it was again lost to fire, but 重学 Priest Jugaku rebuilt it.
In the compound are also statues of 役行者 En no Gyoja and 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O

The main statue is 虚空蔵菩薩 Kokuzo Bosatsu.

- Chant of the temple
なうぼう あきゃしゃ きゃらばや おん あり きゃまり ぼり そわか

The temple was founded in 743 by 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu
on request of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno.
It was located at the middle of 明星岳 Mount Myojodake (549.4m)
in a forest of kashiwa 柏 oak trees.
In 815, 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi at age 42, came here to perform a fire ritual for Kokuzo Bosatsu.
In the compound was a huge kashiwa 柏 oak tree,
which Kobo Daishi used to carve a statue of Kokuzo Bosatsu.
In 戦国時代 the Periof of the Warring States, the lord of
Kannonjijo 観音寺城 the mountain castle Kannonji
大角氏 Lord Osumi gave the name 白木 Shiragi to the area.
Around 1925, the main hall and the temple kitchen were lost to fire.

The Kannon statue was carved by Gyoki Bosatsu.
. Gyoki Bosatsu 行基菩薩 (668 - 749) .

The main statue is 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu.

- Chant of the temple
おん かかかび さんまえい そわか


The large temple was founded in 741 by 行基 Gyoki Bosatsu
on request of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno.
In 806, 平城天皇 Emperor Heijo Tenno named it 九関山宝蔵寺.
Many people come here to pray for health and safety of the family and business.
In the Muromachi period, around 1450, the monzen machi 門前町
town in front of the gate of the temple became quite busy.
In 1452 the main hall was renovated.
Priest 一体禅師 Ittai Zenji made a new statue of Jizo Bosatsu.
In 1700 the temple ws renovated again.
The 本堂 Main Hall, the 愛染堂 Aizen Hall and the 鐘楼堂 Hall for the Temple Bell
were designated as National Treasures.
The belief in 愛染明王 Aizen Myo-O became very popular
and many young people came to pray for a happy marriage.

The main statue is 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi.

The temple was founded in 1932 by 秀範奇水大和尚 Priest Hidenori Kisui.
In the compound is a Hall for Juusanbutsu 十三仏 the 13 Buddhas.
Every year on the 21st day of December there is a special ritual.

To the right of the main hall is 八照閣 Hassho Kaku, a hall with 8 corners,
where 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai is venerated.

Near the main gate is a bronze statue of
mizuko Kobo Daishi 水子弘法大師 Kobo Daishi to rescue aborted children.

On the day of the festival of 宝泉寺 Temple Hosen-Ji,
there appears a ball of shining lisht above the temple.

A priest from 鎌倉建長寺 the Temple Kencho-Ji in Kamakura
came to 入浜の宝泉寺 the Temple Hosen-Ji in Irihama.
He did not like cats and dogs. When he eat, he did not go near people.
Eventually he was killed and eaten by the dog Ichimatsu near 富士川 the river Fukikawa.
Now they found out it was a Tanuki.
There is also a folding screen in the temple which the Tanuki had painted.

The main statue is 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O.
The statue is a designated cultural property.

なうまく さんまんだ ばざらだん せんだん まかろしやだ
そわたや うんたらた かんまん


The temple was founded in 796 by 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi,
when he stayed here on his pilgrimage to 伊勢神宮 Ise Shine.
The villagers revered the statue in a small temple hall.
Around 1195, 平景清 Taira no Kiyomori stayed in this area and came here to pray,
ordering a large temple hall to be built.

In the Edo period life was more peacefull and villagers repaired the main hall around 1750.
The lord of the region, 本多俊次 Honda Toshitsugu (1595 - 1668), had the hall repaired again.
The temple bell was made in 1719 by 辻但馬藤原直種 Tsuji Tajima Fujiwara Naotane.
The Tsuji family was famous for casting bells.
Naotane was the child of the founder of the casting family,

The main statue is 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.
At his sides are statues of 馬頭観音 Bato Kannon and 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi.

おん あびらうんけん ばざら だとばん

The temple was founded around 1610.
It was 氏寺 the protector temple ov the village.
People came here to pray for protection from evil and disasters.
Most of the old temple records were lost in fires.
There are records from 大法師覚応覚永大和尚 Priest Kakuo Kakuei in 1636.
In a small shrine there is a secret statue of 秘仏大聖歓喜大自在天神 Kanki Ten.
In the 観音堂 Kannon Hall is a statue connected with a rope to the outside.
People hold the rope when praying or making a wish, and during special rituals, hence the name
O-Tebiki Kannon Gyoji お手引き観音行事 Ritual of holding on to the Kannon.

The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai. It is 81 cm high.
On his side are the two heavenly kings Dhrtarastra and Vaisravana.
All three statues have been designated National Important Cultural Properties.

おん ころころ せんだり まとうぎ そわか

The temple was founded by 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu (729 -749)
on the ground of 伊奈冨神社 the Shrine Ino Jinja.
Records state the temple was founded in the first half of the eighth century
by the great priest Gyoki on the grounds of 伊奈冨神社 Ino Shrine.
The temple enshrines three Buddhist statues created in the Heian period
depicting a standing Bhaisajyaguru and two of the heavenly kings - Dhrtarastra and Vaisravana, both also standing.
All three statues have been designated National Important Cultural Properties.
Around 830, Kobo Daishi visited the Shrine, and completed the 七堂伽藍 seven buildings in the compound.
Around 1520, on request of 後柏原天皇 Go-Kashiwabara Tenno, it became chokuganji 勅願寺 an Imperial Temple.
The main hall and the living quarters of the priest burned down in 1979
The temple is famous for the 稲生の獅子舞 Lion Dance of Ino.

When they were building the gate of 熱田神宮寺 the Temple Jinguji in Atsuta
after coming to a depth of about 1,2 m, something in the ground begun to wiggle.
When they dug a bit more, a bird of the size of a crow dame out and flew away.
Five days after that, the head priest of the Temple died.

. Sanbo Kojin 三宝荒神 "the fierce deities of the three treasures" .
In the compound of 神宮寺 the Temple Jingu-Ji in 梶並 Kajinami there is a formation of mountains.
At the foot of the mountains the deity 三宝荒神 Sanbo Kojin is venerated as a protector of children.

nanahaka, nana haka 七墓 seven graves / 河内七墓 Kawachi Nanahaka
A popular visit to seven graves in Osaka takes place in Higashi Osaka and Yao City.
It is in memory of 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu (729 -749) and takes place during O-Bon.
The graves are located in 長瀬有馬 Nagase Arima, 岩田, Iwada, 額田 Nikata, 神立 Kandatsu,
垣内 Kakiuchi, 恩智神宮寺 Onchi Jingu-Ji and 植松晒 Uematsu Sarashi.
People who do this pilgrimage will not become ill and go to 極楽 the Buddhist Paradise when they die.
