This happened in May of 1919.
The priest of 満蔵院 the Temple Manzo-In kept a pipe fox.
One of them followed the priest who was going to look after an ill person.
The fox possessed the patient.
An ascetic priest held a special ritual to get rid of the pipe fox.

The temple was founded for the father of
Ashikaga Yoshiharu 足利義晴 (1511 – 1550), his childhood name was 龜王丸 Kameomaru.
His father was 足利政氏 Ashikaga Masauji (? - 1531)
After the Meiji restauration in 1873 until 1912
the temple was relocated to the Miyahara Highschool for maritime affairs.

西蒲原郡 Nishi-Kanbara district 巻町 Maki town

The villagers come together at 仙蔵院 the Temple Senzo-In to make a large rope serpent of straw and sand bales.
This rope is hung at the main hall and the head priest performs a rain ritual.
Then they carry the rope around, blowing a conch and beating drums
until they reach 上堰潟 the Uwaseki lagoon.
They throw the rope in the water and go home.
Now the large serpent seems to call the rain clouds and soon it begins to rain.

The priest of the temple 仙蔵院 Senzo-In had been bewitched by a fox.
On his way in the evening he saw a funeral group coming and going, the dead getting up and running away.
When he came to his senses, it was already day time.

The date of the founding is not clear.

- Sanmon 山門 Temple Gate - -

The temple was founded in the early Kamakura period (1185 - 1333)
by 義照 Yoshiteru, a priest from 醍醐三宝院 the Daigo Sanbo-In Temple in Kyoto.
Together with many sub-temples Manko-In had been venerated in the region.
In 1831 it burned down due to a flash of lightning
and most of the buildings were lost.
But the Buddha statues were saved.
In 1843 the Main Hall was rebuilt
and the temple became 成田山の隠居寺 a temple for retired priests from Narita San Temple.
