A wooden statue of 木造不動明王立像 a standing Fudo Myo-O is also in the temple.
A wooden statue of 木造阿弥陀如来座像 a seated Amida Nyorai is in the temple.
A wooden statue of 木造聖観音立像 a standing Kannon Bosatsu is in the temple.

The date of the founding is not clear.
It was related to the nearby 谷口稲荷 Taniguchi Inari Shrine.
In 1871, the temple was abandoned, but later rebuilt again.

It was the protector Shrine of 惣右衛門村 Sooemon village.

The temple was founded on request of 松浦鎮信 Matsuura Shigenobu (1549 - 1614).
In was build in honor of 徳川秀忠 Tokugawa Hidetada (1579 - 1632).
The first statue was 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai, then changed to 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.
The last statue was 如意輪観世音菩薩 Nyoirin Kannon.
After the Meiji restauration, the tempe became 祇園宮 Gion no Miya （御崎神社 Misaki Shrine).）

According to the legend a famous politician and promoter of Buddhism – 聖徳太子Prince Shōtoku (574-622)
visited this area to construct the Shitennō-ji temple.
On his way the 42 years old Prince became sick. At the same time he received news from the Capital that his Mother, the Empress, was also indisposed. Moreover, the construction of temple’s buildings did not go as planned. Troubled Prince asked his teacher 恵慈 Eiji for advice. Eiji instructed him to carve a statue of Batō Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon).
Next Eiji carved a statue of Dainichi Nyorai (Great Illuminating Buddha) by himself and
asked another monk 慧聡 Esō to carve a statue of Buddha Amida (Buddha of Infinite Light).
Then Prince Shōtoku built a temple in the north-east direction (kimon – unlucky direction) of the Shitennō-ji and enshrined all three statues inside. He invited virtues Buddhist high priests from 法興寺 Hōkō-ji temple in Asuka and conducted a bad fortune expelling ritual. The ritual was a success and the Prince, as well as his family, recovered from illness.
The construction of the Shitennō-ji also progressed and was completed according to the plan.
The ritual was conducted on the 1st day of the horse in the year 618.
This was the beginning for the Renkō-in Hatsuuma-dera temple.
It also explains the origins of the Main Statue of Batō Kannon and the sitting statues of Dainichi Nyorai and
Buddha Amida (both of them registered as National Important Cultural Property).
At the time of the temple’s construction it belonged to Hossō sect but since 1242 it belongs to Shingon.
Until 17th Century Renkō-in Hatsuuma-dera was a practice hall which prayed for spiritual protection of the state,
but since 1617 it became a temple which prayed for 藤堂家 the Tōdō clan.
The 2nd daimyo of this province 藤堂高次 Tōdō Takatsugu (1602-1676) founded new buildings for the temple.
The construction at the current site was finished in 1672 and since then Renkō-in Hatsuuma-dera
became a temple praying for expelling of bad luck of Tōdō clan.
In 1680 the 3rd daimyo 藤堂高久 Tōdō Takahisa (1638-1703) donated a sign with the temple’s name Hatsuuma-dera.
Since then the temple became popular as Kannon who expels bad luck.
Unfortunately in the 2nd World War, during the air raid on Tsu in 1945, this old temple was bombed and destroyed.
In 1952 and 1955 Buddhist statues which are National Treasure were repaired.
In the same year 奉安庫 the Hōanko (a building with Emperor’s photograph) was rebuild.
The Main Hall, which stands to this day, was reconstructed in 1976.
Renkō-in Hatsuuma-dera still stands close to the Shitennō-ji.
The link of these two temples is an existing proof of the history of the area.
This temple is known as 聖徳太子厄除祈願所初馬寺 Shōtoku Taishi Yakuyoke Kigansho Hatsuuma-dera
(Temple which is a praying ground where Prince Shōtoku prayed to get his bad luck expelled).
Every year in March on the 1st day of the Horse many worshipers gather to pray at the temple.

The main statue is 大聖不動明王 Daisho Fudo Myo-O
with 二童子 two acolytes at his side.

The date of the founding is not clear.
In old records it is mentioned as a sub-temple of 観音寺 Temple Kannon-Ji.

Nearby is 新曽氷川神社 the Shrine Niizo Hikawa Jinja.

hashira matsuri 柱祭り pillar festival (to ward off evil)

There was a mountain ascet named 金剛院 Kongo-In, who served 五反田の城主 the Lord of the Gotanda Castle.
While he was travelling in Nagasaki, he heared of a war in his home town and hurried back home.
The soldiers in the castle thought by mistake the castle was lost and killed themselves.
The castle had fallen, but Kongo-In became onryoo 怨霊 a vengeful spirit and annoyed the people.

Men cut down a 22-meter pine tree at dawn, dress the tree, drag the truck around town,
throw people in a river and then the ocean during the day.

Not to mention Kagura (a sacred Shinto entertainment dance) from 6:30 pm to past midnight

One night he saw a leg coming down from the ceiling, saying:

When this happened, there was always great misfortune in the village.

Around 1820, a young woman was bewitched by a curse of a disease.
A priest could drive the illness out.
He said he had relocated the curse to the statue of 伊良原地蔵 Irahara Jizo.
Then a mountain priest of 金剛院 the Temple Kongo-In did an incantation for healing,
they found it was a bewitchment of a fox.
With a special ritual for 愛染明王 Aizen Myo-O the woman could be healed.

. Misakigami ミサキ神 Misaki Kami Deity .
Once the wife of a villager became very ill.
A priest from 金剛院 the Temple Kongo-In made kaji 加持 a prayer incantatnion.
He found that the house of the ill woman was in the way of the local Misakigami deities.
So the family rebuilt the house elsewhere and the woman was healed.

ryuuketsu 龍穴 / 竜穴 a dragon's den
Around 1810, a mountain priest from 金剛院 the Temple Kongo-In spent time
in a cave of 行縢山 Mount Mukabakiyama (829 m).
He heard that at 布引の滝 the Nunobiki Waterfall was a ryuuketsu 龍穴 / 竜穴 a dragon's den water hole,
so he dived in, but there was nothing special to be found.

In ancient times the area belonging to the temple was call 白山 Hakusan (the White Mountain).
It was a praying place for the 2nd daimyo of Tsu province 藤堂高次 Todo Takatsugu (1602-1676),
who worshiped 白山妙理大権現 Hakuzan Myōri Daigongen (a manifestation of a Bodhisattva
in the form of a Shinto deity, originally a deity of Mount Haku one of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains”).

During the Kanbun period (1661-1673) Takatsugu suffered from a disease believed to be a cause of a demon.
He called the high priest 朴心 Bokushin and ordered him to do exorcisms
so he would recovery from illness.
When Bokushin performed a secret incantations and prayers, Takatsugu immediately recovered from the illness.
He was very glad and decided to donate the land of Hakusan, build a temple
and enshrine his private small Buddhist statue in there.
This was the beginning of Mitsuzō-in.
In the 1st year of Meiji period (1868-1912) small halls of Shikoku 88 Sacred Grounds
were built in the mountain at the back of the Main Hall.
The main statue of Mitsuzō-in is Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon).
There are many events organized at the temple, such as
大法師会接待 Daihōshikai Settai (party of Grand Master Club),
御詠歌講 Goeika kō (fraternal group of Buddhist song of praise) and
数珠繰り行事 Juzukuri (Buddhist rosary reeling).
It is also a place of cultural exchange and is visited by many people.
Regrettably the temple lost its buildings and archives in a fire caused by a bombing of Tsu in 1945.
Because the main statue was evacuated from the temple it survived the war unharmed.
After the War the Main Hall and the Main Gate were rebuilt
and maintenance of the road leading to the temple was finished.
In 1980 a new Hakuzan Myōri Daigongen Hall was built on the mountain in the back of the temple.
The Main Hall enshrines the main statue of Senju Kannon, a statue of 弘法大師 Kūkai,
and a statue of 大黒天 Daikoku (God of wealth, farmers, food, and good fortune).
On the right side of the Main Hall stands a cloister called 恵音院 Keion-in.
In its Main Hall a statue of 文殊菩薩 Bodhisattva Monju (Bodhisattva of Supreme Wisdom) is enshrined.
A prayer for good school performance is also held in front of this hall.
There are two stone statues standing in front of the Main Hall of Mitsuzō-in temple:
不動明王 Fudō Myō-ō (Immovable Wisdom King) and 毘沙門天 Bishamon (God of Treasure, Wealth, & Warriors).
On the eastern side of the Hall stand a statue of 水子地蔵 Mizuko Jizō
(Bodhisattva Jizō as a guardian of unborn, aborted, miscarried, and stillborn babies).

Until 1945 the Main Hall of Keion-in cloister used to be a sub-temple of 恵日山津観音寺 Enichizan Tsu Kannon-ji temple.
After the War it was moved to Mitsuzō-in’s precinct.
On the 21st of January, March, September and December a 大数珠繰り Daijuzukuri ritual (Buddhist rosary reeling ritual) is held.
Dozens of people sit in a circle and pray chanting the Heart Sutra and passing around the rosary.
This ritual is a well-known traditional Japanese ritual called 百万遍数珠繰 Hyakumanben Juzu Kuri
(Ritual of praying a million times while reeling the Buddhist rosary).
Mitsuzō-in is a temple number 65 of 三重四国八十八ヵ所 Mie Shikoku 88 Temples Pilgrimage.

The Fudo Myo-O statue made of stone is in 不動堂 a Fudo Hall in front of the main temple.
The main statue is 虚空蔵菩薩 Kokuzo Bosatsu.

A sub-temple of 京都小野地蔵院末 Ono Jizo-In in Kyoto.
The temple was founded by 僧定顯 Priest Sadaaki in 1382 on request of 桃井直和 Momoi Tadakazu (? - 1370).
It was located near the river Arakawa, but lost during a flooding.

The 鐘楼 bell tower has a bell dating to 1774.

In the compound are six statues of 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu dating to 1783.

The Kannon statue is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon.

Chōkoku-ji temple was founded between 701 and 704 by 徳道上人 a monk called Tokudō.
Because it was modeled after Hase-dera temple (the characters it is written with can be also read as Chōkoku-ji) in Nara, it is also referred to as Enchōkoku-ji (Far Chōkoku-ji).
It is believed that the temple was a praying place for 佐々木氏 the Sasaki clan and the clan of provincial governors 北畠氏 Kitabatake.
Unfortunately the temple lost its records in fires caused by frequent wars of the 16th Century, and almost seized to exist.
It was rebuilt by a 2nd daimyo of Tsu province 藤堂高次 Tōdō Takatsugu (1602-1676)
and since then the temple became an important praying place for all next generations of Tōdō clan.
The original main statue enshrined in Chōkoku-ji temple was the 7.9m high Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon).
It was one of many Japanese big size Buddhist statues,
but unfortunately it was almost completely destroyed during the war in Tenshō period (1573-1592).
The statue burned down together with the temple during the fight with the troops
of the first “Great Unifier” of Japan – Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582).
Currently the remnants of Jūichimen Kannon are wrapped in white clothes and shown to the public only once per 18 years.
The current main statue of the Chōkoku-ji temple is a life-size standing Jūichimen Kannon.
It is made from wood and covered with dark brown lacquer.
The statue was carved at the beginning of the 17th Century.
Six Kannon statues (Kannon in six basic forms to protect people in each of the Six Realms of karmic rebirth)
and a statue of Bishamon (God of Treasure, Wealth, & Warriors) all made from stone stand within the temple’s grounds,
just at the end of the road leading to the temple.
It is said that these statues were made in Korea during the ruling of Joseon dynasty and brought from Korean peninsula by Tōdō Takatora (1556-1630).
勢陽雑記 Seiyōzakki Records
Kindenzan Chōkoku-ji is located 2 ri west from Tsu in a mountain of Hase village.
The main statue is a Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon).
It is said that the temple was founded by 天外和尚 Tengai of 東福寺 Tofuku-ji temple after moving from Hase in Yamato province.
At the beginning there were many buildings in its precinct and the temple’s land was worth 80 kan
but after the turbulent times of Tenshō period it fell into ruin.
The temple’s buildings had no thatch roof anymore, no sound coming from the inside and no light,
even a vague one, could be seen.
It is temple number 13 of Ise Pilgrimage.
