The temple was founded as a clan temple in 1616 by 藤堂高虎 Lord Todo Takatora (1556 - 1630),
who had come from 今治藩 Imabari to 伊勢津 Tsu in Ise.
It is a special 祈祷寺院 prayer temple in 伊賀 Iga,
to pray for healing of an eye disease of the lord.
- quote
Built in 1616 as a temple of Shugendo religion, Matsumoto-in remains as
the only temple for Shugendo prayer and worship in Iga to this day.
Kuji-ho, a training method used in Shugendo, is also adopted in ninja techniques,
inferring that Shinobi (ninja) was established under the influence of Shugendo.
