- quote
Seventy-eight white gates are built along the 90-m long approach to Saidoji Temple in Niimi City.
The peach motif engraved on the upper part of each gate recalls the legend of the white dragon who brought a peach tree to the temple.
The gates produce a rarely-seen landscape.
- source : facebook.com/okayama.eng...

The 白龍門 white dragon gates were completed in 2021.

The temple was founded in 739 by 行基 Gyoki Bosatsu, who built a thatched hut here.
In 811, 、空海(弘法大師) Kukai Kobo Daishi named the hut Saido-Ji.
The villagers asked Kobo Daishi to help them, since many children died at childbirth or soon after.
Kukai carved the statue of Kannon, using the special ritual
ittoo sanrai 一刀三礼 carving one part and praying three times
Since then healthy children were born in the village.

This temple was one of the earliest to allow women in the compound.
The main deity is Koyasu Kannon Kannon as protector of children.

- quote -
Aichi's First Shrine
Aichi Prefecture's Masumida Jinja Shrine is everything you would expect an ancient Shinto shrine to be. Graceful, tranquil, elegant, timeless. With at least 1,400 years of recorded history, the sacred Masumida is believed to have been founded in 628BC, and was the Ichinomiya, first, or principal shrine of Owari Province, (western Aichi) dedicated to the "Kami" god Amenoho-no-Akari-no-Mikoto, an ancestor of the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. It is this shrine that gives the surrounding city, Ichinomiya its name. Masumida was patronized and worshiped by the samurai lords of Owari, the Oda clan, and later, the local ruling Tokugawa clans.
The shrine precincts are wide and tree-lined. The main prayer hall is an elegant and simple structure with a regal aura. The large gate projects an imposing, strong and protective image. Carp swim slowly in the pond, and turtles sun themselves on the rocks. Everything is peaceful.
However, the atmosphere of this venerated shrine can change like the weather. Quiet one day, it can become lively and exciting the next as yet another of the shrine's many events and festivals takes place. Every Japanese festival has its similarities, with stalls, entertainments and crowds looking to enjoy themselves, but the festivals at Masumida Shrine are also unique. The spring, summer, and autumn festivals traditionally draw huge crowds, but New Years is when hundreds of thousands turn up to the much-revered historical Masumida to make their first prayers at the First Shrine. The shrine hosts martial arts events, religious festivals, even weddings. There is always something to see and experience every month.
In April the Peach Blossom Festival takes place, while the famous summer Tanabata Festival sees thousands dressed in colorful yukata, summer kimono, making a wish and praying for happiness.
The shrine houses a number of National Important Cultural Properties including 12th Century wooden Kagura masks used in Shinto ceremonial dances, lacquer trays and bowls dating from the mid 1400s, and ceremonial bronze bowls and plates from the mid 1500s. Amulets sold at the Masumida Shrine are considered particularly auspicious. There are over 18 varieties for various needs, from protection for drivers, to protection of loved ones and children, even amulets for passing tests.
Ichinomiya's Masumida Jinja, is a combination of spirituality and festivity, and even today plays a major role in the lives of the people of Ichinomiya.
As the First Shrine, it's a link to the past and the present, it's a place of worship, and a place of celebration.

12 / Aichi, Inuyama city, Tsugao, Suginodan

Also called Tsugao Kannon つがお観音 or Momijidera もみじ寺 Temple with Maple Leaves
Founded in 654.

- quote
Jakkoin Temple, The Maple Leaf Temple
The 320 steps leading up the steep mountainside to the Jakkoin, a small but picturesque temple atop a mountain on the outskirts of Inuyama City, are interspersed by seven places of worship to enable you to be come a better person. Mind you, these 320 steps begin at the car park half way up the mountain. For most, the journey begins at the foot of the mountain. (You don’t want to know how many steps there are from the bottom!) The path to the top is indeed difficult, but among the temple’s visitors are a large number of elderly, some in their 80’s and still trying their best to climb the steps. Half way up, there is a six person capacity monorail available for a nominal fee. (The monorail moves so slowly, it is almost faster to walk!)
Along the steep and arduous path up the mountain are small Jizo statues, protectors of travelers and children, great stone lanterns and Buddhist icons of the seven Gods of Fortune.
At the top is the Jakkoin, a simple yet elegant temple. It’s quite small compared to what you’d see in Kyoto or other major tourist areas, and consists of two halls, joined by a short arched bridge. Jakkoin is most famous for its autumn leaves and spring flowers. Despite being slightly off the tourist path, Jakkoin is a popular tourist destination, and unlike many popular temples, does not look to bleed the tourist in any way. There are no shops or stalls, though a small selection of charms are available, but no one to sell them. Visitors just drop their money in the tin.
The main hall is filled by people offering prayers to the deity, the Thousand-Hand Kannon, Goddess of Mercy statue, and looking heavenward to view the beautifully painted ceiling. Take a turn at striking the great temple bell. It is said that praying for your dreams while striking the bell makes your dream come true.
The view from the lookout area was a favorite of the local Lord, Oda Nobunaga, the first of the Three Unifiers of Japan, and a revered hero to this day! Nobunaga is said to have visited often, as the lookout area provided a fine view of the wide Nobi Plain, his nearby Inuyama Castle, as well as the castles of Gifu, Komaki and Nagoya in the distance and the flat lands of neighboring Gifu Prefecture too. It is a magnificent view, particularly in the spring and autumn months when Jakkoin is absolutely stunning.

5 / Kitahakusanbira, Inuyama, Inuyama-City, Aichi

- quote
The bright red timbers and green copper roof of Inuyama Narita-san Temple make it one of the most photographed temples in Aichi Prefecture. The temple is a branch of the Shingon sect Narita-san Temple, based in Narita, near Tokyo’s international airport. Shingon Buddhism is a form of esoteric Buddhism that believes enlightenment can be attained in one’s lifetime through spiritual practice of mantras. Associated with the priest, Kobo Daishi, and the many temples he founded on holy Mt. Koya, Inuyama Narita-san is situated on a steep hill providing picturesque views of the Kiso River, Inuyama Castle, and on clear days, the skyscrapers of Nagoya-City.
The temple, near Inuyama Yuen Station, was founded in 1953 and contains a principal image of the powerful deity, Fudo Myou, holding a sword in his right hand, and a rope in his left. Almost every month a number of special events are held at the temple, including festivals and important events on the Buddhist calendar.
The temple is popular with drivers across Aichi, as it offers prayers and amulets for safe motoring.

Pilgrimage

33 Kannon Temples along the Yamanote wards in Edo was founded around 1720.
