Masumida Jinja 真清田神社, Aichi's First Shrine
Aichi Prefecture's Masumida Jinja Shrine is everything you would expect an ancient Shinto shrine to be. Graceful, tranquil, elegant, timeless. With at least 1,400 years of recorded history, the sacred Masumida is believed to have been founded in 628BC, and was the Ichinomiya, first, or principal shrine of Owari Province, (western Aichi) dedicated to the "Kami" god Amenoho-no-Akari-no-Mikoto, an ancestor of the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. It is this shrine that gives the surrounding city, Ichinomiya its name. Masumida was patronized and worshiped by the samurai lords of Owari, the Oda clan, and later, the local ruling Tokugawa clans.
The shrine precincts are wide and tree-lined. The main prayer hall is an elegant and simple structure with a regal aura. The large gate projects an imposing, strong and protective image. Carp swim slowly in the pond, and turtles sun themselves on the rocks. Everything is peaceful.
However, the atmosphere of this venerated shrine can change like the weather. Quiet one day, it can become lively and exciting the next as yet another of the shrine's many events and festivals takes place. Every Japanese festival has its similarities, with stalls, entertainments and crowds looking to enjoy themselves, but the festivals at Masumida Shrine are also unique. The spring, summer, and autumn festivals traditionally draw huge crowds, but New Years is when hundreds of thousands turn up to the much-revered historical Masumida to make their first prayers at the First Shrine. The shrine hosts martial arts events, religious festivals, even weddings. There is always something to see and experience every month.
In April the Peach Blossom Festival takes place, while the famous summer Tanabata Festival sees thousands dressed in colorful yukata, summer kimono, making a wish and praying for happiness.
The shrine houses a number of National Important Cultural Properties including 12th Century wooden Kagura masks used in Shinto ceremonial dances, lacquer trays and bowls dating from the mid 1400s, and ceremonial bronze bowls and plates from the mid 1500s. Amulets sold at the Masumida Shrine are considered particularly auspicious. There are over 18 varieties for various needs, from protection for drivers, to protection of loved ones and children, even amulets for passing tests.
Ichinomiya's Masumida Jinja, is a combination of spirituality and festivity, and even today plays a major role in the lives of the people of Ichinomiya.
As the First Shrine, it's a link to the past and the present, it's a place of worship, and a place of celebration.
