This temple was founded in 1682 by 賢栄和尚 Priest Kenei.
The main statue is 十一面観音 Kannon with 11 Heads, carved by 智證大師 Chisho Daishi.

Nephew of Kobo Daishi.
The temple was called 牛込南蔵院門徒慈雲山大悲院 Ushigome Nanzo-In.
The village of 早稲田村 Waseda Mura was once called 元牛込村 Moto Ushigome Mura.
The modern building looks more like a museum. It was designed by an architect of the nearby Waseda University,
石山修武 Ishiyama Osamu.

This temple was founded in 1611 by 道意上人 Saint Doi.
The main statue is 金胎両部大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.
There is also a statue of 愛染明王 Aizen Myo-O, where people come to pray for finding a good partner and a peaceful married life.
It the compound was an old katsura 桂 Japanese Judas tree. In 1740, the ninth head priest 貫海上人 cut this tree and carved a statue of Aizen Myo-O. It is about 1 meter high.
The temple is therefore also called
愛染寺 Aizen-Ji or 谷中愛染堂 Yanaka Aizen-Do.

The novel 愛染かつら "Aizen Katsura" by 川口松太郎 Kawaguchi Matsutaro refers to this temple.
There is another temple in Nagano which claims an Aizen Katsura tree.
