鵜殿石仏群 The Udono Sekibutsu
are images of Buddha that were carved into the stone walls of a cave located in Karatsu City Saga Pref. According to the ancient record of Byodoji Temple, which used to be located inside the cave, Kobo Daishi Kukai visited this place on his way from China back to Kyoto in 806. Deeply impressed by the holy atmosphere of this place, Kukai carved the three images of Amida, Shaka Norai (Gautama Buddha), and Kannon in the central part of the wall.



The images Kukai carved do not remain now; however, there are about 60 images of Buddha such as the Eleven Headed Kannon, Tamonten, and Jikokuten. These three images are considered to have been made in around the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392), and others up to the Edo period. Each image of Buddha shows powerful expression on its face, which reminds us of the flourishing Buddhism culture at the time.

鵜殿の石仏群(唐津市相知町)
鵜殿（うどの）の石仏群は、唐津市相知（おうち）町鵜殿窟（うどのいわや）と称される断層岩壁に彫刻された磨崖仏（まがいぶつ）群。もともとは大きな洞窟であり、かつてはその中に平等寺が建立されていたそうです。お寺は焼失し、今では石壁だけとなりました。文禄３（1594）年に著された「鵜殿山平等院略縁起」によると、この石仏は空海（くうかい）が「漢土の霊窟にも劣るまじき法地なり」と彫刻したことがはじまりとされています。
唐からの帰途ここに立ち寄り、弥陀（みだ）、釈迦（しゃか）、観音の３体を彫ったとのことです。残念ながらこの３体は現存せず、その真偽はわかりませんが、ここが真言密教の信仰の場であったこは間違いないようです。最古の石仏は石仏群の中心となる十一面観音とその両脇の多聞天（たもんてん）と持国天（じこくてん）。その作風から南北朝時代のものと推定されています。その他、大日如来、不動明王など、総数は58体。南北朝時代から江戸時代にかけてのもの。勇壮な石仏群は当時の、松浦武将の心のよりどころ、文化の華だったとも言われています。また、ギリシャやインド地方の影響があるともいわれています。

While Kōbō Daishi was training at this temple, a small statue of Jizō appeared at the base of an old cedar tree guarded by a pair of cranes.
To commemorate this, Kōbō Daishi founded the temple and enshrined the statue in a larger, three-foot, statue of Jizō.

The crane is considered a symbol of longevity and good fortune and its appearance is considered an auspicious sign. Emperor Kammu gave the temple the title of Imperial Office Temple (Chokugansho).

This temple is unique in Tokushima Prefecture in having escaped the ravages of fire over the years. The temple is located on a mountain at 550 meters (1,800 feet) and is one of the pilgrimage's six major Nansho,, difficult access temples.

Starr notes that the statue next to the honzon is that of Minamoto Yoritomo on a horse.

Gyōgi built the temple on the order of Emperor Shōmu. While the temple was being built, a white heron (shirasagi) landed on what is now called Shirasagi Bridge and this was considered to be a very auspicious sign.

The honzon, slightly smaller than two inches, was carved on 'jambuna' gold (enbudagon) by Gyōgi and installed here to pray for an easy delivery for Empress Kōmyō, Emperor Shōmu's wife. Kōbō Daishi carved a six-foot statue of Jizō that now enshrines the tiny statue carved by Gyōgi.

Legend states that, in the 19th century, a woman named Okyō came to Shikoku with her lover to escape the authorities. They had killed the man she had been a mistress to before she had met the man she was now with. To escape the authorities, they disguised themselves as henro and were following the other henro around the pilgrimage. When they reached the hondō of Temple 19, as she tried to ring the bell to start her prayers, Okyō's hair suddenly stood on end and got entangled in the bell's rope. After struggling, she got herself free but all of her hair, and part of her scalp, remained entangled in the rope, leaving her with the monastic tonsure. Taking this as a sign from Kobō Daishi, the couple both became devout Buddhists, she becoming a nun and he a monk. She lived the rest of her life in a small chapel owned by the temple and devoted her life to prayers while he became a temple laborer. Okyō's hair and scalp can still be seen at the temple in a little glass-encased shrine just off the walkway.

Like so many of the other temples, this one was destroyed by Chōsokabe and then later restored. The temple burned down again and was rebuilt in 1977.

In the compound is a small statue with a very shiny red face. It is a statue of Binzuru, one of the first sixteen disciples of the Buddha. He was a physician and came from a family of distinguished physicians. But, he loved to drink and this often caused problems. One day, a rich man came to the Buddha and asked him to overcome an evil spirit that had been afflicting his house. The Buddha couldn't go, so he sent Binzuru in his place, but admonished him to be careful and not to drink. Binzuru went and did, in fact find an evil spirit. He confronted it and, by proclaiming the Buddha's teachings, overcame it.

In thanks, the rich man threw a banquet and Binzuru, after holding out for a long time, broke down and had a drink in celebration. Not being able to stop after just one, though, he got drunk and lost his power over the evil spirit. The spirit returned and soon the house was suffering again. The Buddha became mad and kicked Binzuru out of his community but said nothing when he saw that Binzuru was still following him around and listening from outside.

When the Buddha died, he called Binzuru to his side and told him that he forgave him, but that Binzuru would never be allowed to enter Nirvana himself. He would always have to remain in this world to minister to the people. That is why you see his red-faced statue at many temples. People rub the statue and then place the hand they used over the part of their body that hurts.

As this was once the barrier temple for Awa Province, while here, henro should make a spiritual self-evaluation. Has your pilgrimage been worthy so far? Have you been living up to the obligations placed on you as a henro? Have you maintained your vows? If not, you should return to Temple 1 and start over again. Some stories say that those who are unworthy have actually been unable to enter the temple grounds.

Gyōgi founded this temple on the orders of Emperor Shōmu and carved the statue of Yakushi as its honzon. At that time, Buddhist law forbid women getting any closer to the temple than the hill called Hanaori no Saka. Likewise, women were not allowed on Kōyasan or the mountain of Temple 12. In fact, women at the time were not allowed on any of the sacred mountains.

One hundred years later, Kōbō Daishi's mother, Tamayori, came to visit him while he was training here. For seventeen days he performed an esoteric rite at the temple gate. At the end of the seventeen day ritual, the ban against women climbing the mountain was lifted and Kōbō Daishi's mother was allowed to enter the temple precincts. Once she entered the temple, she shaved off her hair and became a nun.

Because Kōbō Daishi took care of his mother after she became a nun, the temple came to be known as Onzanji, a temple of gratitude to one's parents.

Frederick Starr says that Kōbō Daishi's mother's bones are buried here and that Kōbō Daishi carved the statue of himself in the Daishidō.

Like Temple 4, this temple is also called Dainichiji. It was founded by Kōbō Daishi in accordance with an oracle he received from Dainichi Nyorai while performing a goma ceremony here. Until its destruction by fire in the 16th century (probably the work of Chōsokabe and his men), it was associated with the Ichinomiya Shintō Shrine, across the street. The two were officially separated during the persecution of Buddhism at the beginning of the Meiji Period. The current restoration was built in the later part of the Meiji Period.

There are two statues of Dainichi here, one carved by Kōbō Daishi and the other carved by Gyōgi. The one by Gyōgi is housed in the shrine across the street.

Statler says that this is one of the most popular temples on the pilgrimage, with half a million people visiting it each year. When you stop to think that the main pilgrimage season only lasts a little more than two months, you get an idea of how crowded it can get.

Founded by Gyōki in the 8th century, this temple is known as the temple 'par excellence' for protecting yourself from the dangers of misfortunes (Yaku-yoke) due to your age. At the age of 42, Kōbō Daishi performed a great exorcism here to prevent public disaster. He also, on the orders of Emperor Heijō, carved statues of Yakushi and twelve other gods of the sun, moon, and stars to turn aside the dangers associated with his being 42 years old.
The honzon is popularly known as the Backward-facing Yakushi (ushiromuki Yakushi).

Since the time of Kōbō Daishi, emperors have often sent embassies here to pray and exorcise, and the temple has been under special government control.

It is believed that women at the age of 19 or 33, and men at the age of 42 or 61, are particularly prone to bad luck. The years of greatest danger are:
Men: 41, 42, and 61.
Women: 32, 33, and 61.
And, before you think you are safe in other years, for both men and women, the years of lesser danger are:
1, 6, 7, 15, 16, 19, 24, 25, 28, 34, 37, 43, 46, 51, 52, 55, 60, 64, 69, 70, 78, 79, and 82.

It is thought that you can turn aside ill fate (yaku) and bring good fortune by, in part, reciting the Mantra of Yakushi and placing a coin on each of the steps as you walk up the stairs leading to the temple on Yakuyoke hill (42 steps on the men's side and 33 steps on the women's side). The steps are said to contain 1000 consecrated copies of the Sutra of Yakushi, each character written on a pebble. The final climb to the hondō has an additional 61 steps, the worst age for both men and women.

The temple is also dedicated to the safety of sailors and the numerous model ships around the temple compound represent ships saved by the power of Yakushi.

The 28 pillars of the hondō represent the 28 astral deities. When the temple burned down in 1188, the honzon was seen to fly away to the distant hillside of Mt. Tamazushi. A new statue was carved when the temple was rebuilt, but during the dedication ceremony the original statue flew back. Both statues now sit in the temple, back to back.

Yakuōji offers a beautiful view of Hiwasa Bay and Hiwasa Castle from the viewing area around the pagoda. The small islands in the bay make for a great picture, but don't be fooled by the castle — i read that it was only built in the 1960s to attract tourists.

Saba Daishi is located between Temples 23 and 24 and is the last temple on the trail in Tokushima Prefecture. Even though the temple is known by everyone as Saba Daishi, it's official name is Yasakasan Yasakaji (The Temple of Eight Slopes).

Originally built by Gyōki Bosatsu and founded by Kōbō Daishi. The honzon shows Kōbō Daishi holding a fish in his right hand because of the following legend.

Legend states that while walking the pilgrimage, Kōbō Daishi met a man leading a packhorse loaded with dried mackerel and asked to be given one but the man refused and walked away. Suddenly his horse stumbled and fell, stricken with colic. Remembering that he had heard of a great priest that was supposed to be in the area, and immediately realizing what had happened, he rushed back to find Kōbō Daishi to beg his forgiveness and to ask him to cure his horse.

When he found him, Kōbō Daishi gave him a pot and told the man to bring water from the sea. When he did, Kōbō Daishi performed a service over it and then told the man to make the horse drink it. After drinking the water the horse recovered almost immediately.

Kōbō Daishi again asked for one of the man's mackerel and this time received it. He carried it to the shore, placed it in the water, and said a prayer. When the man saw the fish come to life and swim away, he immediately knelt before Kōbō Daishi and vowed to dedicate his life to Buddhism.

Sadler notes in his book that the head priest told him that, while there had indeed been a small hermitage here, the priest had converted it into a full temple and gotten it included as a bangai temple after WWII.

The temple is located on the coast by the national park of Yasaka Yahama. As the name of the park implies, there are 8 slopes and 8 beaches, with Saba Daishi located between the 4th beach and the 5th slope.

Konomine-ji has quite a special garden arrangement. The 150 stone steps from the Niomon Gate to the Main Temple Hall and the Daishi Temple Hall feature a garden on either side, which helps pilgrims to forget the arduous task of climbing the stone steps.

Mount Konomine is 450 meters high.

Konomineji, temple 27 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage is known as both nansho and a sekisho. a "nansho" is a temple that is considered difficult to reach, usually, as in the case of Konomineji,, because it is high on a mountain. Sekisho were barriers on highways that checked your papers. In terms of the pilgrimage they are 4 temples considered spiritual barriers that you will not get past without the correct spiritual attitude.

Konomineji was founded as both shrine and temple, with the shrine being above the temple. The shrine doesnt get as many visitors.
The temple burnt down in the early Meiji Period, and it was forbidden at that time to build a new temple so the locals found an unused temple in another part of the country and had it dismantled and reassembled here.

Daizenji is located in Susaki City between Temples 36 and 37 on the way down to Cape Ashizuri from Kōchi City. It was founded by Kōbō Daishi. It is also the only temple that has Kōbō Daishi as the honzon in the Hondō.

A lot of the compound has been rebuilt. The Daishidō is new and has been relocated to the bottom of the hill. According to a new guidebook i have, there is now a monorail (looks like a cablecar though) that will take you to the Hondō and the Nōkyōjo,. If you choose to walk up the stairs to get there, it's an easy climb.

The temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi. Chishō Daishi later added forty-seven buildings to the temple. The honzon is attributed to Chishō-Daishi as well (but Starr says that it was by Kōbō Daishi). Chishō carved it from a shining piece of wood he found floating at sea. At the time he found it, a white-haired sage appeared to him and said,
'This is the holy site in which to turn the wheel of Dharma and enter Samadhi.'

The temple also contains the mausoleum of Emperor Sūtoku, who was assassinated near Temple 79 in 1156 after being banished from Kyōto following an unsuccessful coup attempt against his brother, the then current emperor. The mausoleum was built in 1414 and is located behind the temple. According to the guidebooks, all pilgrims should visit it.

This temple has some of the oldest buildings on the pilgrimage and the hondō dates back to the turn of the seventeenth century. The three main buildings are in the permanent shadows of overhanging trees. The trees are so thick that a tiny grotto and spring that have formed are in near darkness.

The temple was founded by Gyōki Bosatsu in 741 at the request of Emperor Shōmu for the protection of the nation. The sixteen-foot Kannon combines both his Jūichimen and Senju aspects and is also by Gyōki, but was partially repaired by Kōbō Daishi after a fire. The Kannon is the finest and largest statue on Shikoku and has eleven faces and forty-two arms.

The hondō is of the Kamakura period and is the oldest physical structure remaining of all the Kokubunji. Its bell is also one of the oldest in Japan. Both the bell and the hondō are considered a National Treasure.

Of interest are some building materials to the east of the hondō left over from the time of Kōbō Daishi's reconstruction of the temple. These are considered National Treasures. The daishidō attracts people with the classical beauty of the Tahōtō (treasure tower) in which a thousand Jizō statues are enshrined.

The walkways of this temple are lined with stone sculptures, each representing one of the eighty-eight temples on the pilgrimage. According to Readicker-Henderson, the carvings for Temples 74 and 75 are especially good. The rows of carvings begin directly behind the main gate, which is protected by a huge spreading pine tree.

There is one official state temple in each province, and these are:
Temple 15 (Awa/Tokushima), Temple 29 (Tosa/Kōchi), Temple 59 (Iyo/Ehime), and Temple 80 (Sanuki/Kagawa).

黒石市山形町８１ / 81 Yamagatamachi, Kuroishi-shi, Aomori

It belongs to the Daigo shool of Shingon Buddhism 真言宗醍醐派.

The main statue is 勝軍地蔵尊 Shogun Jizo, General Jizo

The temple was founded in 1654 on behalf of the daimyo 津軽土佐守信義 Tsugaru Nobuyoshi (1619 - 1655). The founding priest was 日蔵 Nichizo. The Tsugaru Kuroishi clan protected the temple.
黒石三代領主津軽政兜 Tsugaru Masataka added more riches to the temple and made it the votive temple of his clan in 1697.

Tsugaru Tamenobu 津軽為信 (1550 - 1608) had build the Atago Shrine 愛宕宮 in Kuroishi and offered a statue of Shogun Jizo. The hall was called Atago Gongen 愛宕権現 at the top of mount Aseishi 浅瀬石山. The Hall had been relocated to Iwaki town 岩木町愛宕山橋雲寺
Aomori-ken, Hirosaki-shi, Atago, Yamashita.

There was also a statue of Fugen Bosatsu 普賢菩薩 and many people born in the year of the dragon or snake (tatsu 辰 mi 巳 ) came here to pray to these deities.

In 1971 the main hall burned down and the statues and picture scrolls were lost.
In the next year the hall was rebuilt.

The famous Bon dance (Kuroishi yosare 黒石よされ) has been performed in the grounds of this temple since the Edo period.
