Juutooji 鷲頭寺 Juto-Ji - Nakaichi
妙見宮 Myokengu 鷲頭寺 Jutoji "Eagle Head"

山口県下松市中市91/ Yamaguchi, Kudamatsu, Nakaichi

.......................................................................

Nr. 18 - Rishabi 利車毘(りしゃび)童子 Rishabi Doji

.......................................................................

The main statue is Rakuju Kannon 楽寿観音.

.......................................................................

The temple was founded in 597 by 琳聖太子 Rinsho Taishi, the Korean ancestor of the Ouchi clan.
This marked the beginning of the belief in 妙見 Myoken.
Myoken Daibosatsu 妙見大菩薩 is the protector deity of the Ouchi clan.
There was a huge matsu no ki 松の木 pine tree in the compound, which give rise to the area name
Kudamatsu 下松 "Beyond the pine tree".
The Shrine 降松神社 Kudamatsu Jinja is said to be the origin of the Myoken belief.
. Myoken Bosatsu 妙見菩薩 .
This deity is a purely Japanese Bosatsu, presumably an amalgamation of the Shinto Deity Myoken Shin 妙見神
and the deity of the Northern Polar Star (Dipper).

- quote
Ouchi Clan (大内氏) - Origin
In many cases, samurai families in Japan call themselves a descendant of so-called 'genpei tokitsu' (shortened expression of four major families) or other central nobles, however, the Ouchi clan calls itself a descendant of Rinsho taishi, the third prince of Seongmyeong-wang of Paekche.
Since Rinsho taishi emigrated to Japan and docked at Tatarahama in Suo Province, he called himself 'Tatara,' and thereafter he moved to Ouchi Village, so he is said to have used a family name of Ouchi.
However, because there is no record for Rinsho taishi in ancient times, and because it is said that the Ouchi clan came to call itself a descendant of Rinsho taishi from and after the 14th century, this legend lacks credibility.
Nothing has been made clear, except for the fact that it came from Zaichokanjin (the local officials in Heian and Kamakura periods) who had been appointed to Suo no Gonnosuke (supernumerary vice governor of Suo Province) by heredity for generations in Suo Province.

- quote -
Shimizu Muneharu 清水宗治 (1537 – 1582)
also known as Shimizu Chōzaemon (清水 長左衛門),
was a military commander during the Sengoku period. He served the Mōri clan (one of the powerful clans in Bitchu Province) as a retainer to Kobayakawa Takakage and took part in the expedition to unify the Chūgoku region.
He was lord of Shimizu castle at Bitchu Province, and became the lord of the Bitchu Takamatsu Castle after he captured it in 1565.
His father was Shimizu Munenori.
Hashiba Hideyoshi (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi), a retainer of Oda Nobunaga, went on an expedition to the Chūgoku region to reunify Japan in 1582. Muneharu resisted Hideyoshi, locking himself in Bitchu Takamatsu Castle. Hideyoshi advised Muneharu to surrender on the condition that Muneharu give him Bitchu Province, but Muneharu refused.
Takamatsu Castle was flooded by Hideyoshi and nearly fell.
In June, during the flooding, Nobunaga died in the Incident at Honnōji in Kyoto.
Having heard about Nobunaga's death, Hideyoshi made peace overtures on the condition that Muneharu commit seppuku (suicide).
Shimizu's grave is at Seikyō-ji, Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

- quote - By Vicki L Beyer -
A fun and popular New Year's activity in Japan is going on a short pilgrimage to honor the seven lucky gods, a traditional symbol of fortune for the new year. New Year's weather is usually fine, lending itself to a little outdoor jaunt and these walks are relatively short -- usually taking only a few hours. The tradition began during the Edo Period (1603-1868) as a way to secure good fortune for the coming year by completing the pilgrimage early in the new year.
There are over 200 such pilgrimage courses across Japan. This year, I recommend one in Tsurumi, a northern ward of Yokohama. Much of the route travels along or near the old Tokkaido road, one of the historic roads linking Kyoto and old Edo (now Tokyo), and takes visitors to small obscure shrines and temples as well as a major religious center. This is an area off the beaten track for foreigners, but easy, accessible, and historic. The walk can be completed in less than three hours, although you may want to devote the entire day to give yourself time to stop and enjoy other sights along the way. I've prepared a map to help.
Most pilgrimages offer pilgrims the opportunity to acquire a memento of their journey. For this pilgrimage, from Jan 4 through Jan 12, 2019 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), you can purchase a printed sheet at your first stop for the modest investment of 100 yen. At each of the seven destinations, there will be a special stamp that you then stamp across the printed name of that shrine or temple, evidence that you have been there (no additional charge). Don't worry that it's in Japanese -- an attendant or your fellow pilgrims will help you stamp over the correct name at each location.
Tsurumi sits between the old Tokaido post towns of Kawasaki and Kanagawa.

Watarase ishi 渡良瀬石 Stone at the Watarase valley
If someone touches the special Watarase Ishi Stone in the compound of 正観寺 the Temple Shokan-Ji,
the whole village will begin to tremble.

- quote -
A scenic train ride through a deep valley わたらせ渓谷 Watarase Keikoku
The Watarase Keikoku Railway runs between Kiryu in Gunma and Nikko in Tochigi.
The 44.1-kilometer-long line follows the lush Watarase Valley
and provides striking riverside views over the 80-minute ride.
The journey is beautiful in all seasons, but the colorful foliage in autumn is particularly impressive.
The variation in altitude throughout the trip means you will see a range of colors throughout the ride.
