観音寺特攻観音堂 Kannonji Tokubetsu Kogekitai Kannon
Setagaya Special Attack Peace Kannon

Two Special Attack Peace Kannon (Buddhist goddess of mercy) statues,
one for the Japanese Navy and the other for the Army, were created in 1952 and were the first tangible remembrances of the young men in both the Navy and Army who died in special (suicide) attacks during the Pacific War. Several former high-ranking officers supported their creation. These included Lieutenant General Michio Sugawara and General Masakazu Kawabe from the Army and Admiral Koshirō Oikawa, Admiral Sankichi Takahashi, and Vice Admiral Kinpei Teraoka from the Navy. The names of those men who died in special attacks were placed inside the two kannon statues.
In May 1955,
the two Special Attack Peace Kannon were moved to Setagaya Kannon Temple in Setagaya Ward of Tōkyō City. They were first housed in the temple's main hall but were moved to a separate hall in May 1956. The two kannon statues were originally just in remembrance of men who died in aerial special attacks, but later this was expanded to include special attacks by watercraft. There is a plaque in front of the Special Attack Kannon Hall that is engraved in both Japanese and English. The English portion reads:
"Tokubetsu Kōgekitai": In Memoriam

- quote
Honsenji Temple
Shinagawa City packs a lot of historical culture within its borders. Its location on the edge of Tokyo Bay saw the city become the first stage of any journey from old Edo to Kyoto while the Buddhist faithful found succour in its many temples and shrines.
One of the most important of these temples is Honsenji Temple, a Shingon Buddhist temple, Honsenji features a number of well-known rituals and ceremonies that make a visit here a useful reminder of just how deep the city's religious and cultural histories are.
Famous for its bronze seated Jizo statue, the statue is one of six that were created and placed at the entrances to old Edo back when the city was starting its ascendancy. The statue was cast in the 18th century though the temple itself is said to have been established at the beginning of the 9th century before being rebuilt in the 17th century. Honsenji is consequently Shinagawa's oldest temple.
The temple is also known for its annual joya no kane bell ringing ritual. The temple's giant bell - which for some reason was taken out of the country only to be found in Switzerland before being returned in 1930 - is rung 108 times during the New Years festivities. Buddhist belief suggests that the ringing represents an expunging of the 108 worldly desires said to have accumulated over the previous year.
Another New Year tradition sees the monks of the temple perform the otakiage rite. Here, lucky charms and decorations of the previous year are ceremoniously burnt as an offering to begin the year anew. Fire walking occurs here during the Shukuba Festival in September while a gingko tree by the entrance gate is said to be around 600 years old and has been recognised by the city as a natural treasure.

. Suigetsu Kannon 水月観音 "Water Moon Kannon" .
- quote -
Kannon Gazing at the Moon in the Water. One of 33 Forms of Kannon.
The imagery is akin to the symbolism of the mirror -- i.e., it represents the emptiness of all phenomena (i.e., life is illusion), for the mirror does not represent reality -- it merely provides a reflection of reality. Thus, the mirror is a metaphor for the unenlightened mind deluded by mere appearances.
Also see the famous Buddhist parable from China known in Japan as Enkō Sokugetsu 猿猴捉月. Translated as "Catching the Moon’s Reflection," it tells a similar story of the unenlightened mind deluded by appearance, one evoking the emptiness of the moon’s reflection in water.
