Statler says that this is one of the most popular temples on the pilgrimage, with half a million people visiting it each year. When you stop to think that the main pilgrimage season only lasts a little more than two months, you get an idea of how crowded it can get.

Founded by Gyōki in the 8th century, this temple is known as the temple 'par excellence' for protecting yourself from the dangers of misfortunes (Yaku-yoke) due to your age. At the age of 42, Kōbō Daishi performed a great exorcism here to prevent public disaster. He also, on the orders of Emperor Heijō, carved statues of Yakushi and twelve other gods of the sun, moon, and stars to turn aside the dangers associated with his being 42 years old.
The honzon is popularly known as the Backward-facing Yakushi (ushiromuki Yakushi).

Since the time of Kōbō Daishi, emperors have often sent embassies here to pray and exorcise, and the temple has been under special government control.

It is believed that women at the age of 19 or 33, and men at the age of 42 or 61, are particularly prone to bad luck. The years of greatest danger are:
Men: 41, 42, and 61.
Women: 32, 33, and 61.
And, before you think you are safe in other years, for both men and women, the years of lesser danger are:
1, 6, 7, 15, 16, 19, 24, 25, 28, 34, 37, 43, 46, 51, 52, 55, 60, 64, 69, 70, 78, 79, and 82.

It is thought that you can turn aside ill fate (yaku) and bring good fortune by, in part, reciting the Mantra of Yakushi and placing a coin on each of the steps as you walk up the stairs leading to the temple on Yakuyoke hill (42 steps on the men's side and 33 steps on the women's side). The steps are said to contain 1000 consecrated copies of the Sutra of Yakushi, each character written on a pebble. The final climb to the hondō has an additional 61 steps, the worst age for both men and women.

The temple is also dedicated to the safety of sailors and the numerous model ships around the temple compound represent ships saved by the power of Yakushi.

The 28 pillars of the hondō represent the 28 astral deities. When the temple burned down in 1188, the honzon was seen to fly away to the distant hillside of Mt. Tamazushi. A new statue was carved when the temple was rebuilt, but during the dedication ceremony the original statue flew back. Both statues now sit in the temple, back to back.

Yakuōji offers a beautiful view of Hiwasa Bay and Hiwasa Castle from the viewing area around the pagoda. The small islands in the bay make for a great picture, but don't be fooled by the castle — i read that it was only built in the 1960s to attract tourists.

Saba Daishi is located between Temples 23 and 24 and is the last temple on the trail in Tokushima Prefecture. Even though the temple is known by everyone as Saba Daishi, it's official name is Yasakasan Yasakaji (The Temple of Eight Slopes).

Originally built by Gyōki Bosatsu and founded by Kōbō Daishi. The honzon shows Kōbō Daishi holding a fish in his right hand because of the following legend.

Legend states that while walking the pilgrimage, Kōbō Daishi met a man leading a packhorse loaded with dried mackerel and asked to be given one but the man refused and walked away. Suddenly his horse stumbled and fell, stricken with colic. Remembering that he had heard of a great priest that was supposed to be in the area, and immediately realizing what had happened, he rushed back to find Kōbō Daishi to beg his forgiveness and to ask him to cure his horse.

When he found him, Kōbō Daishi gave him a pot and told the man to bring water from the sea. When he did, Kōbō Daishi performed a service over it and then told the man to make the horse drink it. After drinking the water the horse recovered almost immediately.

Kōbō Daishi again asked for one of the man's mackerel and this time received it. He carried it to the shore, placed it in the water, and said a prayer. When the man saw the fish come to life and swim away, he immediately knelt before Kōbō Daishi and vowed to dedicate his life to Buddhism.

Sadler notes in his book that the head priest told him that, while there had indeed been a small hermitage here, the priest had converted it into a full temple and gotten it included as a bangai temple after WWII.

The temple is located on the coast by the national park of Yasaka Yahama. As the name of the park implies, there are 8 slopes and 8 beaches, with Saba Daishi located between the 4th beach and the 5th slope.

History of Sekizan Zen-in Temple
Sekizan Zen-in was founded in 888 AD following the will of the high priest Jikaku Daishi Ennin as one of the affliated temples of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, the Headquarters of Tendai sect Buddhism. Situated in a quiet neighborhood near Kyoto Shugakuin Imperial Villa, it is a famous site for the red tinged autumnal leaves.

The high priest Jikaku Daishi Ennin (794~864) went to China (then under the Tang dynasty) and, enduring a lot of hardships over there, at last mastered Tendai teachings. He thanked Sekizan Daimyojin (泰山府君- 赤山大明神) for its protecting him during his travel to and stay in China, and it is said that he made a vow to build Sekizan Zen-in when back home. Ennin, after returning to Japan, established the basis of Tendai sect of Buddhism, but could not fulfill his vow to build Sekizan Zen-in. Following his will, Anne, the fourth Head Priest of Tendai sect, is thus said to have founded Sekizan Zen-in.

The principal deity, Sekizan Daimyojin, is a brought-back avatar or a double image of Taizanfukun 泰山府君 (Taizan Fukun) in Mt. Sekizan in China (a world heritage site in China) which has been regarded as the head of China’s Five Great Mountains ; Taizanfukun became the founding father of the yin-yan philosophy in Japan. Located at Kyoto’s northeast corner , where the front spirit gate called Omote Kimon 表鬼門 used by demons is believed to stand, Sekizan Zen-in has been worshipped as the temple to protect the citzen from bad luck coming through that gate.

Revered since by the imperial family, Sekizan Zen-in was visited by the retired Emperor Gomizunoo (1596~1680), who is known as the building owner of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa; he, then, ordered repair of the temple buildings and presented a calligraphy of the phrase Sekizan Daimyojin (赤山大明神) done by himself. Holding the sacred pendant paper strips and a cluster of bells for charm performance, a carved monkey is placed on the top of the oratory roof thereby serving a talisman against demons; as such, Sekizan Zen-in has been widely venerated up to this day as the guardian temple against the evil spirits.




- Sekizan Zen-in is also known as :

●Temple of “Sekizan Kugyo (Penance)” :  it is up from here and down to here that the ascetics of Sennichi Kaiho Practice 千日回峰行 (One Thousand-Day Practice, which is the hardest of all Tendai sect Buddhism ascetic practices), repeat climbing up and down, to and from the top of Mt. Hiei.

●Temple where incantations and prayers such as for “Healing Asthma with the incantatory sponged gourd" ぜんそく封じ・へちま加持,
“Mass Service for Rosary” 珠数供養 (正念珠) and “Taizanfukun Festivity” are practiced.




●Where Pilgrimage of the Miyako Shichifukujin (Pilgrimage of Kyoto’s Seven Deities of Good Luck) is said to have originated as the temple of Fukurokuju (Deity of Wealth and Longevity). 赤山禅院 福禄寿

●Temple for commercial prosperity where “Custom of Payment on the 5th and 10th days” originated.

Sekizan Daimyojin ( 赤山大明神)

Sekisan Myōjin
Literally, "Red-Mountain Shining-Deity," one of the "protectors of the dharma" (gohō;) in the Tendai sect of Buddhism. While studying Buddhism in China, the Japanese monk Ennin underwent practice at the Shandong temple Sekizan Hokke-in (Ch. Chishan Fahua Yuan) for the purpose of receiving a personal tutelary deity, and in return vowed to build a meditation hall upon his return to Japan. The hall was in fact constructed by his disciples in 864, and later moved to Nishi-Sakamoto (in northeast Kyoto) in 888, the date representing the first worship of Sekizan Myōjin in Japan.

This event, however, is not recounted in the standard "Ennin's Journey to the West," and since a "red mountain" deity did not exist in China at that time, it seems likely that the new deity was created against the background of conflict between the Tendai sect's two branches, the "mountain" branch (with headquarters at Mt. Hiei's Enryakuji) and the "temple" branch (headquartered at Miidera [Onjōji]). Namely, since Onjōji already had its own tutelary deity Shinra Myōjin, Mt. Hiei's temple Enryakuji responded by adopting the tutelary Sekizan Myōjin .

According to current research, the existence of the temple Sekizan Zen'in can be dated from the latter half of the tenth century. Most images of Sekizan Myōjin depict him as attired in red Chinese costume or cloak, with three-peaked crown and holding bow and arrow. From the medieval period on, the deity's Buddhist counterpart or "essence" (honji; see honji suijaku) was identified as the boddhisattva Jizō (Sk. Kstigarbha), and a process of assimilation occurred whereby he became identified as well with the deities Taizan Fukun (a Chinese tutelary of human destiny), Mutō Tenjin (a deity of pestilence identified with Susanoo), and Gozu Tennō. In contrast to the shrine Hiyoshi Taisha which guarded Mt. Hiei's eastern flank, Sekizan Myōjin was worshiped as a guardian of the mountain's western flank. Sekizan Myōjin was also venerated as tutelary of Injō Nembutsu (a school of nenbutsu "singing"), and was also later adopted as one of the cult of sanjūbanshin ("thirty guardian kami"). At present, Sekizan Myōjin is enshrined at the Sekizan Zen'in within the grounds of the Shūgakuin Detached Palace in Kyoto.

Matarajin is a deity that was introduced to Japan from China by Ennin , Jikaku Daishi Ennin 慈覚大師仁円 as a protector deity of the Amida Sutra (Amida kyoo 阿弥陀経). Some say he is also the secretary of Emma, the main deity of the Buddhist Hell.

Shinra Myōjin
One of the "protectors of the dharma" (gohō;) in the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and tutelary of the famous temple Onjōji (Miidera) in Ōmi, Shiga Prefecture. According to legend, during the return of Enchin (Chishō Daishi) from China, a deity called Shinra Myōjin appeared onboard the ship in the form of an old man and vowed to protect the Buddha Dharma. After Enchin returned to Japan, the deity appeared again and led Enchin to Onjōji. Thereafter, leadership of the temple passed to Enchin from the earlier intendant priest Kyōtai. Enchin then had a shrine built to the north of the temple, where he enshrined Shinra Myōjin.

This tradition is first recounted in the Onjōji ryūge-e engi, a legendary history compiled in 1062, but the deity had already been given an official rank (shinkai) in 971, making it evident that veneration of the deity preceded that date.

The deity is most frequently portrayed iconographically as an old man wearing Chinese robes and headpiece, and holding a sutra scroll and scepter. The wooden, seated image of Shinra Myōjin possessed by Onjōji (classified as a national treasure) is a masterpiece of Japanese combinatory religious art. The Mii Mandala, called "three treasures of the original essence" portrays Shinra Myōjin together with the other three deities Mio Myōjin, Sannō Gongen, and Kifudō surrounding the bodhisattva Maitreya (Miroku); this mandala was used in important Buddhist rites at the temple Onjōji.

From the medieval period, the honji (original essence; see honji suijaku) of Shinra Myōjin was identified variously as Monju Bosatsu (Skt. Bodhisattva Manjushri) or Fudō Myōō (Skt. Acala Vidyaraja), and he was frequently merged with other deities like Susano no mikoto, Gozu Tennō, and the "dragon king" Sagara Ryūō.
Shinra Myōjin is still enshrined at the Shinra Zenjindō north of Onjōji.

When the priest of the present temple was still a lay person he was attacked in the mountains by wolves. He fled to the nearby temple hall of Hooraiji 鳳来寺 Horai-Ji (Aichi), and was then saved by Yakushi Nyorai, who took on the feature of a tiger to drive away the wolf. The man was so impressed that he became a Buddhist priest to serve "Tora Yakushi" and placed a statue of this Buddha in his temple.
The statue is now called
sainan yoke no tora Yakushi 災難除けの寅薬師 "Tiger Yakushi to prevent misfortune and disaster".

The 12 Vows of Yakushi Nyorai

01 May a radiant light blaze forth from my body after enlightenment, brightening countless realms, and may all beings have perfect physical form, identical to my own.

02 May my body be like pure radiant lapis lazuli, with a radiance more brilliant than the sun and moon, illuminating all who travel in darkness, enabling them to tread upon their paths.

03 By my limitless insight and means, may I enable all beings to obtain the necessities of life.

04 May all beings be shown the path of enlightenment and may adherents to the sravaka or pratyekabuddha paths become established in Mahayana practices.

05 May all beings be aided to follow the precepts of moral conduct. After hearing my name, those who have broken the precepts will be aided to regain their purity and prevented from sinking to a woesome path of existence.

06 May all who are deformed or handicapped in any way have their deformities removed upon hearing my name.

07 May all who are ill be cured upon hearing my name.

08 May all sentient beings who are restrained by their circumstances of birth find a favourable rebirth and progress towards Liberation.

09 May all who are caught in Mara's net, entangled in negative views, be caused to gain correct views and thus practice the Bodhisattva Way.

10 May all who are punished by the king be freed of their troubles.

11 May those who are desperately famished be given food. May they ultimately taste the sublime Teachings.

12 May all who are destitute of clothes obtain attractive garments and various adornments upon concentrating on my name.

The Chinese Underworld
In ancient Chinese religion the Underworld was called the Yellow Springs (Huángquán 黄泉)
possibly a reference to the ubiquitous Yellow River. The Yellow Springs were not a ‘hell’ where one suffers retribution but rather a place where the souls of the departed were supposed to reside, the destination of the whitesoul (pò 魄). Life could be made easier for the pò if it was provided with the necessary amenities: food, clothing, money, precious objects, and servants. These would be placed in the tomb by the surviving relatives. The servants (human and animal) were at first provided by immolating the actual servants of the deceased in the tomb, but with time (during the first half of the first millennium BC) this practice ended and inanimate representations of the attendants were placed in the tomb instead.

Anything more precise as to the exact ancient conception of the underworld is lost, as the surviving texts from Chinese Antiquity have been written by Confucianists who have generally ridiculed the ancient myths.

Under the Hàn, the God of the Eastern Mountain (Mount Tài: Tàishān 泰山), the abode of the xiān 仙, starts being held responsible for the register of the living and the dead; as a result, the idea that the dead reside under Mt Tài starts spreading. Concurrently with Mt Tài in Shāndōng (山東), a temple in Fēngdū 酆都 in Sìchuān (四川) also starts being considered as the entrance to the underground realm of the dead.

how and what did the Netherworld look like? There was a common belief that the life in the Netherworld was similar to life on earth. Firstly, people believed that the dead beings were just the continuation of the living; for example, they needed food and possessed various desires: “Yellow Springs reflected the hierarchy nature of the moral world. If a person had a poor and miserable time when alive, they would have the same in the afterlife.”

hitodama 人玉 spirit of a dead person, "soul flame"
It has the size of a Bon lantern for a child and stagers around in the air. It appears in front of a temple or home of a diseased person or is seen on the way to the underworld, but it soon becomes invisible again.

昔、大巧寺の上人が川にかかる橋を通りかかったところ、赤ん坊を抱いたウブメに出会った。冥土の苦難を訴えるウブメに上人が経をあげて回向してやると、その心は鎮められた。数日後、美しい女が上人の前に現れ、お礼として1包みの金を置いていった。上人はこれで宝塔を作ったのだが、それが今日も大巧寺にある。

meido de shari o eru 冥途で舎利を得る bringing back relics from the underworld
In the village 藍田村 Aidamura in the district 丹波舟井郡 Tanba Funaigun there lives 山田彦七 Yamada Hikoshichi, who was a pious man saying the 念仏 Nenbutsu prayer regularly.
On the first day of the 12th lunar month in 1698 he died at the age of 27, but the next day he caem back to life.
He started talking about his experience in the underworld, telling people he got some busshari 仏舎利 Buddha's relics there. He was holding something sparkling in his left hand - like a small grain.
But on the next day he died for good and the relic was gone from his hand.

天慶年中に、東寺の日蔵が死んだ後に甦った。日蔵が言うには、地獄で鉄窟の中に炭のようになった人が赤灰の上に蹲っていて、我は宇多帝の子であるが、仏寺を焼いて有情を害した罪を受けて苦しんでいる。本国に帰って国王および宰補に奏上して供養の卒塔婆を作れと告げたそうだ。

ある民家で妻が死んだ。ある夜、夫が引きこもっていると、亡妻がやってきて生前大切にしていた鏡を取りに来て、冥土に持ち帰る。その後も夜毎に来て存命中に使った調度を持ち帰ったが、ある夜いぶかしく思い糾問すると幽霊と思ったのは欲深な隣家の女だった。

線香立ては新仏専用のもので、平常は使わない。蝋燭も一本その傍に立てておくが、これは決して継ぎ足してはいけない。新仏の魂は、この明かりと煙をたよりにして冥土の旅に上がるという。

daija 大蛇 huge serpent
甲賀三郎は妻に隠された愛妾を探しに蓼科山に登った。頂上にあった竪穴で翁と媼に出会い、道を尋ねた上に栗餅をもらい、その晩は池畔にあった祠に宿を取った。夜が明けて人が来たが、三郎を見て「大蛇大蛇」と言って逃げ出してしまった。神々が、「冥土の食べ物を食べたので人になることはできない。諏訪湖に入り神になるのがよい」と言ったので、その通りにしたという。

深江川のアブリ魚は、腹の両側に焼けたような模様がある。子どもたちが魚を焼いているところに弘法大師が通りかかり、買い取って川に放してやると、半焼けの魚はみるみる甦って泳ぎまわった。模様はそのときの焼け焦げの跡。これと同じ話が室生村にもある。

On the first equinox after a death, family members make a ritual visit to Mount Manizan.

It is in the compound of the temple Mani-Ji and is 357 m high.
There is a temple called 摩尼寺 Mani-Ji.
