Eifukuji 永福寺 Eifuku-Ji, Shimo-Hinachi
Eifukuji
1978 / Nabari city, Shimo-Hinachi
The Kannon statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu with 11 Faces.
- Chant of the temple
The temple was founded in 725 by 徳道上人 Saint Tokudo.
It has 七堂伽藍 a complete temple compound with seven buildings.
Most buildings burned down during a fire in 1590.
A rich man named Shimohinachi no Ujitsugu revived the temple.
He had copies made of the statues from 長谷寺 the Temple Hasedera in Nara :
十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon and the side-statues of 天照皇大神 Amaterasu Omikami and 春日大神 Kasuga Okami.
In 1712, the temple was revitalized.
Around 1800 the temple declined and was then revitalized by 鈴木賢瑞 Suzuki Kenzui.
The Temple Store House has many statues:
十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon, 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai, 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai,、
聖徳太子 Shotoku Taishi,、聖観音 Sho-Kannon Bosatsu,、不動明王 Fudo Myo-O, 五大明王 Five Great Fudo,
Kakuban Kogyo Daishi (1095 - 1143).
The roof of the temple is called mukuriyane Mukuri Yane, "Raised Roof".
This is a special type of raised roof often seen in Kyoto.
- quote
A Mukuri-yane is a style of roof that curves down along the eaves
and was popular among the aristocracy in Kyoto for the soft impression it gave.
The people of Kyoto would pay special care to the height of their roofs,
and this custom spread to the people of Kumagawa as well.
