Kuzukaji 國束寺 Kuzuka-Ji, Watarai
涌福智山 Yufukuchizan 國束寺 Kuzukaji
三重県度会郡度会町平生1481 / Mie, Watarai, Watarai town, Hiro

The Kannon statue is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon.

- quote
元9 國束寺 - Former Number 9 Kuzuka-ji temple
According to the legend, Kuzuka-ji temple was founded 1400 years ago by Prince Shōtoku (574-622), a famous politician and promoter of Buddhism. He had a vision sent from Goddess of the Sun Amaterasu, in which she ordered him to make a temple and enshrine a statue of Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon) at Mount Kuzuka, which is in the West of Ise Shrine.
It is believed that somewhere in that mountain a placenta of both Goddess Amaterasu and her younger brother Susanoō was buried.
Prince Shōtoku built a temple and enshrined Jūichimen Kannon wishing for peace, tranquility and abundance of people’s lives.
Thanks to strong support of Emperor Shōmu (701-756) and Emperor Saga (786-842) the temple prospered, having 6 sub-temples and 132 monks’ quarters in its precincts.
When Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi, 774-835, the founder of Shingon sect) visited Kuzuka-ji, he praised the Mount Kuzuka saying it is like a mountain of the Womb Realm Mandala (Taizōkai Mandara). Since then the area became a popular practice ground for Esoteric Buddhism monks.

Kuzaka-ji temple appears in a poem by 禅也法師 monk Zen’ya:
The temple is like the mountain which binds the land together
Therefore for generations to come people will look up to it with respect

「寺の名も 國を束ぬる 山なれば 代々にし高く 仰がざらめや」

The poem was included in a 16th Century collection of poetry Nendai waka shō (1532-1584), edited by Kitakabe Kuninaga (1505-1584).
At the end of 16th Century the temple got involved in war turbulence and as a result the whole complex turned to ashes.
Later, thanks to the devotion of many people and protection of daimyo Tōdō Takatora (1556-1630) and Kii Tokugawa clan, the temple was rebuilt at the mountain top.
In the following centuries it became a famous temple of the Ise region. We can imagine the scale of the rebuilt temple from painting titled Sanjō Garan Ezu (Painting of the Temple at the Mountain Top, 1834) which is kept at the Kuzuka-ji.
However 19th Century anti-Buddhist movement and post 2nd World War land reform made the temple fall into decline.
In 1953 the main statue and two halls were moved to Osaka’s Shitennō-ji temple, which lost its buildings during the air-raid in 2nd World War.
In exchange the Kuzuka-ji received the statue of Jūichimen Kannon and together with the rest of the buildings, the temple moved to the bottom of the Mount Kuzuka.
The scale of the temple is not comparable to the times when it most flourished, but the monks believe that one day it will be rebuild at the top of the mountain once again.
Until then they will follow the Buddhist teachings and pass the spirit of 「和」 harmony (wa) emphasized by Prince Shōtoku.

Keishooji, Keishō-ji 継松寺 Keisho-Ji, Nakamachi
岡寺山 Okaderazan 継松寺 Keishoji
三重県松阪市中町1952 / Mie, Matsusaka, Nakamachi

The Kannon statue is 如意輪観音 Nyoirin Kannon.

- quote
According to old records, in the year 743 when 聖武天皇 Emperor Shōmu (701-756) was planning
to make the statue of Great Buddha in Nara,
he sent 行基 Gyōki (668-749, a famous monk who traveled around Japan to preach to commoners) to Ise Shrine to consult the Goddess of the Sun Amaterasu on the matter. Gyōki received the divination and according to it built four temples in Ise area, placed Nyoirin Kannon (Omnipotent Kannon) statue in each and prayed for success of the plans of the Emperor. Keishō-ji is the only temple of these four that survived to this day.
Gyōki received a divine message from Kannon (the one that would be later worshiped in Keishō-ji) who promised protection during the construction of the Great Buddha. When he told the Emperor about his vision, Emperor Shōmu, who was 42 years old at the time (which was believed to be unlucky year in a man’s life), decided to move the Nyoirin Kannon statue to his palace and ask for expelling the bad luck during that year.
After a year Emperor issued a decree and order to build a hall for Kannon in the original temple’s grounds and move the statue back to its place. He wrote down a name on a tablet and presented it officially naming the temple Nyoirin-in. The temple became the first sacred ground in Japan which would specialize in expelling of bad luck.
The temple’s name Keishō-ji comes from a monk named Keishō, who rebuilt the temple after it was destroyed by a big flood in 750.
In 802 Kūkai 弘法大師 Kōbō Daishi, 774-835, the founder of Shingon sect) when staying at this temple, sculpted statues of 不動明王 Fudō Myō-ō (Immovable Wisdom King) and 毘沙門天王 Bishamon (God of Treasure, Wealth, and Warriors) and placed them on the altar as attendants of Goddess Kannon. Since then Keishō-ji became a temple belonging to Shingon sect of Buddhism.
In 1581 the temple received land from 蒲生氏郷 Gamō Ujisato (1556-1595), the Lord of the Matsusaka Castle, and moved to its present location from Ishizu in Iitaka district. From that moment a history of nowadays Keishō-ji started.
The temple revived to its former glory thanks to 政算 Seizan – the first abbot of the temple after movement.
In August of 1997 the Main Hall, together with other buildings and the Main Gate, were dismantled and repaired. During the renovation works, an old sign originally staked to a building’s ridgepole, ritual arrows (to fend off bad luck) and vessels with five grains (wheat, rice, beans, millets: awa and kibi) which all were used for ridgepole-raising ceremony had been discovered. All of them are important evidence that tell us the temple’s history.
The temple is commonly known as 岡寺観音 Okadera Kannon and it is famous for its power of expelling bad luck.
Throughout the temple’s history Keishō-ji was visited by many famous writers, poets and artists.
Among temple’s possessions there are many precious calligraphies made by a famous calligrapher and painter
池大雅 Ike no Taiga (1723-1776). Other example is a highly praised copybook of calligraphy issued by this temple and
made by a print artist – 韓天寿 Kan Tenju (1727-1795).

Hoorinji 宝林寺 Horin-Ji, Misono
佛性山 Busshozan, Hōrin-ji, Horinji

伊勢市御薗町小林361 / Ise city, Misono town, Ohayashi

The Kannon statue is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon.

- quote
Hōrin-ji is a temple belonging to Jōdo sect (Pure Land Buddhism).
It stands in a Misono Ohayashi district of Ise city, on former grounds of
Yamada bugyō office (official commissionaires of Ise region),
where a famous samurai 大岡忠相 Ōoka Tadasuke (1677-1752) used to work.
This is also a place where Miya River flows into Ise Bay.
Hōrin-ji was founded by 円譽上人 monk Enyo in 1613, when the first buildings were erected.
At the time it was a sub-temple of 長楽寺 Chōraku-ji temple from Ōminato district.
The statue of Goddess Kannon worshiped in this temple is a Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon)
which once was a treasure belonging to 実性寺Jisshō-ji temple.
Jisshō-ji used to manage 月夜見宮 Tsukiyomi no Miya shrine – a sub-shrine of the Gegū outer shrine of the Ise Shrine.
In 1868 the new government of Meiji period issued an order to separate Shinto from Buddhism (shinbutsu bunri).
As the result Jisshō-ji temple was closed and the Jūichimen Kannon statue was moved
to Seirin-ji temple in Ohayashi district.
In 1925 Hōrin-ji and Seirin-ji merged and the statue of Goddess Kannon was moved once more.
Since then it is worshiped in Hōrin-ji temple.
The Jūichimen Kannon statue is a hibutsu (hidden Buddhist statue)
and it is shown to the public only once a year – on November 20th, when
a Ten-night memorial service (お十夜法要 - Ojūya hōyō) is being held.
Followers call her 小林観音 Ohayashi Kannon and believe that she cures eye diseases.
Since the beginning of 17th Century, each year on the 15th of August during Obon (Festival of the Dead),
self-made 手筒花火 hand pipe fireworks are set off and traditional dance
大念仏羯鼓踊り Dainenbutsu Kanko Odori is performed as a memorial service for the ancestors.
Hand pipe fireworks are a form of ceremonial bonfires (送り火 okuribi) made to see off the ancestral spirits,
and are known in this region as a rare example of a fire festival.

Myooenji 妙円寺 Myoen-Ji, Ijuin
法智山 Hochizan 妙円寺 Myoenji
鹿児島県日置市伊集院町徳重521 / Kagoshima, Hioki city, Ijuin town, Tokushige

The main statue is 釈迦牟尼仏 Shaka Nyorai.

- quote
One of the grandest events of Kagoshima is the annual Myouenji Pilgrimmage (妙円寺詣り Myōenji mairi), where ordinary folk don samurai armour and walk either 10km or 20km on the 4th Saturday of October,
ending at 徳重神社 Tokushige Shrine.
Plenty of people also show up in ordinary clothes to participate.
The reason for this is tied to 島津義弘 Shimadzu Yoshihiro.
One famous feat of Shimadzu Yoshihiro was his decision during the great Battle of Sekigahara.
On 21 October 1600, he decided to escape with his band of 1,500 men not by avoiding the 30,000-strong enemy, but by charging through their midst and executing a magnificent retreat plan after breaking through enemy lines.
After that year, the Shimadzu warriors would march a 40km round trip from Ijuin to Myoenji Temple each year on the night before, in remembrance of that fateful day and to strengthen themselves physically and mentally.
In 1869, Myoenji Temple was destroyed in the wave of Buddhist expulsion sentiment that swept through Japan,
and was rebuilt as Tokushige Shrine.
