The main statue is 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi.

. Kobo Daishi Kukai 弘法大師　空海 (774 - 835) .

The temple was founded in 1839 by the believers in Kobo Daishi.
They received a statue from 高野山金剛峯寺 Temple Kongobu-Ji at Mount Koyasan.
People come here to pray for the well-being of the family, protection from fire and disasters,
a good harvend and luck in business.
The bronze statue of Kobo Daishi on top of the hill is the largest in Japan.
It is 17 meters high and weighs 11 tons.

九州八十八ヶ所百八霊場 Kyushu 88 and 108 Pilgrimage

九州八十八ヶ所百八霊場は、昭和五十九年(1984)に弘法大師入定千百五十年の記念として創設されました。各派真言宗寺院を札所とし九州を一周する壮大な巡礼霊場となっております。
お大師様が大同元年(806)、唐より帰朝し筑紫(福岡)の国に二年間逗留されておりました。その間、御請来目録を御しるしになられる傍ら、九州各地を訪ねられたとも伝えられています。

Iinuma no tenjin 飯沼の天神 The Tenjin Deity of Iinuma

The 報恩寺 Temple Hoon-Ji in Asakusa war originally located in 飯沼 Iinuma.
A disciple of 法然 Saint Honen named 性信 Soshin became head priest.
In the winter an old man came, listened to the sermon of the priest and was greatly moved.
He told the priest "I am 飯沼の天神 the Deity Tenjin of Iinuma".
He promised to protect the priest.

The date of the founding is not clear.
This is the only temple with 1000 statues of Yakushi Nyorai in Japan.
They were maybe made in the Muromachi period (1336 - 1573).

In the compound is kosodate Jizo 子育て地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu to bring up children

In the compound is also a statue of Hannya Hime 般若姫 Princess Hannya.

The official version of the introduction of Buddhism into Japan has the king of Paekche sending a statue to the Yamato court in the mid 6th Century, but that ignores the fact that northern Kyushu and the Japan Sea coast, much closer to the peninsula, had extensive contacts and interactions with Korea, and it seems highly unlikely that Buddhism did not appear in these areas before then.

Once upon a time, on an evening before the house was to be rebuilt,
the grandparents were in the back room and the children were eating dinner there.
The parents were working near the fire place.
Nearby was 慈眼寺 the Temple Chigan-Ji with a great tree in the compound.
The parents heard the sound of the great tree falling down.
They got terribly afraid and rushed to the back room but there nobody had heard anything.
A tanuki had come to the back of the hearth and used its tail to hit the pillars and the floor.

The Otomo clan was regent of six countries in Northern Kyusho until the 21 generation
大友宗麟 Otomo Yoshishige (1530 - 1587).
Ōtomo Yoshishige, Ōtomo Sōrin, also known as Fujiwara no Yoshishige.
When Yoshishige turned Christian, he took the name of ドン・フランシスコ Don Francisco.
During the wars in Kyushi, his retainers even destroyed Buddhist temples.
Temple Toyo-Ji was also destroyed.
Around 1670, it was restored by 河野九兵衛 Kano Kyubei.
At that time it was a sub-temple of 臼杵月桂寺 the Temple Gekkei-Ji in Usuki.
