大分県国東市国東町岩戸寺1232番地 / Oita, Kunisaki town, Iwatoji
The Yakushi statue is made from wood and said to date to the Heian Period :
The main statue is 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O.
The temple was founded in 718 by Priest 仁聞菩薩 Ninmon Bosatsu.
At the entrance to the temple are two large 仁王像 Nio guardian statues.
The statue on the right, 阿形像, has a signiture of 1478.
In the compound is a large stone tower, 国東塔 Kunisaki To.
It has a signature of 1283.
- quote
Iwato Temple is one of the Rokugo Manzan Temples that is said to be opened in 718.
It used to have many monks, and it prospered during the Kamakura period.
Currently, the oldest Nio statue among those in the Kunisaki Peninsula stands in the entrance of the stone stairs.
On the right-hand side of the stone stairway, there is the main hall where Fudo Myoo is the main deity.
When you climb that stone stairway, you will reach the auditorium which was the main stage of the Shujo oni-e rituals.
Also, the "Kunisaki Tower", which is the oldest stone towers in the Kunisaki Peninsula, is an exciting place to visit.
This place is called Tateishiyama Iwatoji because it sealed the neck mound of Mongolian army's adversaries with stones.
The auditorium is also the stage of 修正鬼会 Shujo oni-e rituals.

Temazuchi-no-mikoto
The shrine was founded in 776.
The priests of the shrine are said to be descendants of Ōkuninushi.
- quote
Susa Shrine is located deep in the mountians of Sada in Izumo.
According to the ancient chronicles, after the gods Susano and Kushinada got married at Yaegaki Shrine
and made Suga Shrine their home, they set off on their travels around the country.
When they returned to Izumo they fell in love with the area of Susa.
After giving birth to many gods and creating the country, Susano handed power over to his descendents,
and laid his soul to rest here.
Behind the main shrine hall is a giant cedar tree, which is said to be 1200 years old.
It has long been worshipped as a sacred tree, and it is believed to be the dwelling place of gods and spirits.
It has recently become a popular “healing” spot, as it has been named by a spiritual healer as one of the best energy sources in Japan.
There is a well in the shrine grounds, and it is said that Susano used the water from here to purify the area. Although the well is deep in the mountains, it contains sodium, and the water has recently been found to come from to the Sea of Japan.
The waters of the hot springs in the surrounding area also contain sodium, and are well-known for their high quality.
The area around the shrine offers some spectacular rural landscapes.
The pure water river alongside the shrine runs out into the Hiikawa River.
Mt. Sentsu at the source of the river is said the be the place where Susano descended from the Celestial Plain of heaven,
and it also features in the legend of Yamata-no-orochi, as the home of the eight-headed creature.

Bungotakada / Bungo Takada
Welcome to the city of Bungo Takada, a corner of Japan with a timeless quality and superb natural and cultural attractions. Located on Kyushu’s Kunisaki Peninsula, the city’s distance from the historic capitals of Kyoto and Tokyo has helped keep its many unique aspects free from the spoils of modern uniformity. Wherever you turn, you’ll find dramatic natural landscapes and the remains of an extraordinary culture that saw the merging of Buddhism and Japan’s indigenous religious beliefs over 1,300 years ago.
Bungo Takada serves as a cultural and historical hub for exploring the peninsula. The city stretches inland from the populated coastal area and rises through lush agricultural farmland into low, craggy mountains that hide valleys with landscapes unchanged for a thousand years. The volcanic rocks in the mountains have been the perfect medium for the chisels of stone carvers for centuries, and remarkable examples of their artistic skills are found in temple gateways, on awe-inspiring cliff faces and, just as often, on the roadside or in the garden of a local family. (It is said that some 70 percent of Japan’s Buddhist statuary can be found on the Kunisaki Peninsula.) There is something magical about this area’s close links to antiquity, at once captivating and mystical. ...

Inari Myojin no keshin 稲荷明神の化神 the incarnation of the Deity Inari Myojin
If there is a strong rain, the bridge 尼子橋 Amagobashi comes under water and can not be crossed over.
When the wife of 平則道 Taira no Norimichi (1008 - ?). Lady Tokuni, saw this, she felt great pain in her heart.
One day, an old man with white hair passed her hut with a sigh, so she invited him inside.
As they talked, the old man said he wented to build a new bridge and asked for her help.
The old man built a new bridge in just 30 day.
After passing over the bridge, the old man said good bye and left.
Tokuni looked after him, but he suddenly disappeared near 薬王寺 the Temple Yakuo-Ji.
Searching for him, she found a hole with some offerings of mochi 餅 rice cakes.
She thought he must have been an incarnation of 稲荷明神 Inari Myojin.
The deity was now called 尼子稲荷明神 Amago Inari Myojin and became the warden of the bridge.

and indeed, it got well immediately.
The story spread around and many people came to pray here and made a statue of Gyoki.

Suga Jinja 須我神社 Shrine Suga Jinja, Izumo
島根県雲南市大東町須賀260 / 260 Daitocho Suga, Unnan, Shimane
The Deities in residence are Susano-O and Kushinada Hime.

Suga Shrine [須賀神社]
is a little off the beaten path.
Japan’s First Capital
Ironically, this somewhat remote area is the mythological first capital of Japan, as denoted by this sign:
- Shrine Grounds
So what is about this relatively small shrine out in the middle of almost nowhere?
Why did we both going through all the trouble to get here?
Speaking from the mythological of the Kojiki, Suga Shrine is where Susano-o and Kushinada lived
after the defeat of Yamata no Orochi.
Upon arriving here Susano-o felt rather inspired and recited the first poem in Japanese literature.
This same poem is on a large rock just inside of the shrine. Roughly translated it reads:
In Izumo, where the clouds form,
I see a fence of clouds.
To protect my wife, I too, built a fence.
These clouds are as my fence.
From our perspective it is so cool to be in not only Japan’s first recorded capital (even if it is just a myth), but also the place where a mythical god recited the first poem in Japanese literature.
Ema of Suga Shrine depicting Susano-o and Kushinada
Just behind the haiden is the the hoden, the main shrine building,
where Susano-o, his wife Kushinada, and their child, Yashimajinumi no kami, are enshrined.
Yakumo Yama
Sometimes shrines in Japan have two parts; that main shrine rests at the foot of the mountain, but another part of the shrine that lies near the top of the mountain. The part of the shrine at the top of the mountain is called a okunomiya [奥の宮], and that is what we were hoping to get a glace of. In the case of Suga Shrine, the okunomiya is on top of Yakumoyama.
If you head back to the road with the signs for the shrine, you will see that that road it keeps going. You will need to follow that same road for quite some time before you see another sign on your left that will point you in the direction of Yakumo yama. It is not all that far of a walk, about three kilometers or so to reach the mountain, which albeit isn’t that big.
I encourage anyone going out that way to plan time for walking up Yakumo yama.
The surrounding landscape is really lovely and it is not a hard hike at all.
Take a few things with you for a light lunch and it would be a great outing.
