Jizooji 地蔵寺 Jizo-Ji, Itano

5 / Tokushima, Itano district, Itano town, Hayashi-Higashi

- quote
Jizō-ji is temple No. 5 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, or Henro.
It stands in an old residential area at the border of the Tokushima rift valley and the foothills of the Sanuki Mountains.
The long pedestrian approach is bordered by pines and cherry trees which are beautiful in spring. The path passes through a pair of stone columns before reaching the simple main gate. The temple guardians are cartoonlike figures in bright colours, and their eyes are a bit too close together.
Beyond the gate, there is a spacious plaza dominated by a big, knobbly gingko tree which is over 800 years old.
To the right is a statue of Kūkai on the pilgrimage and a simple raised belfry.
Next is the small Awashima Hall, home of the alter ego of the guardian deity of Awashima Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, who cures all illnesses.
The Daishi Hall is large and splendid, and unusual for its brightly painted wood carvings of animals.
Near the Daishi Hall is a bronze seated Buddha.
Buildings on the north side include the Nokyosho and a hexagonal building housing a golden Kannon statue.
There’s also a water harp that mimics the sound of the instrument called koto.
Facing the Daishi Hall is the Main Hall. The principal image is 勝軍地蔵 a Shōgun Jizō statue. The Jizō is mounted on a horse wearing armour, with a staff in his right hand and a jewel in his left hand. He drives out wrongdoers and prevents disasters. On the left side of the temple veranda sits a pensive-looking Binzuru statue.
Behind the Daishi Hall, a path leads past an old cemetery and up some stone steps to the Inner Sanctuary, which is big enough to be its own major temple compound. From the top of the steps, you can look down on the temple and the Tokushima rift valley beyond.
The Inner Sancturay is called the Rakan Hall. It’s an elongated U-shaped building housing life-sized statues of 500 rakan, or arhats, semi-enlightened followers of Buddha.
It also houses a magnificent, larger than life statue of Kūkai.
- History
Kūkai founded the temple in 821 at the request of Emperor Saga.
He carved a Shōgun Jizō statue of about 5.5 cm and enshrined it in the principal image. After that, the imperial family visited the temple devotedly for three generations.
Due to their faith in the Shōgun Jizō, military commanders such as Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoshitsune, and the Hachisuka clan made many donations to the temple. With these donations, the territory of the temple was expanded, and there were about 300 branch temples in the provinces of Awa, Sanuki, and Iyo. However, during Chōsokabe Motochika’s unification of Shikoku, the Jizō-ji Temple was burned down.
After that, Jizō-ji was rebuilt and expanded by the efforts of successive priests, monks, and believers, and the temple compound is still extensive.
The Rakan Hall was built in 1775 by two brothers who were priests of the temple.
However, it was damaged by fire in 1915 and rebuilt in 1922, and now only around two hundred of the statues remain.

Jōkan Shōnin, who was the officiating priest of the Kumano Gongen in Kīshū, carved a statue of the Enmei Jizō in a sacred tree here, and Kūkai placed a statue he carved in its belly.

- quote -
Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple was founded in 587AD.
The main deity is the 11-headed Kannon, who many people believe has the power to drive out evil spirits. As such, people who are said to be in their unlucky year come and pray here.
The main symbol of the temple is the three-storey pagoda, the only one in the San-in region of Japan.
The name Kiyomizu means pure water, and a mountain stream flows along the moss-covered stone steps on the long approach.
Along the way is Iwa-fudo-san, the immovable stone deity.
He watches over people coming to worship and drives away evil.
Near the top a statue of Kannon awaits the worshippers, welcoming them to the temple with her serene presence.

205 / Shimane, Matsue city, Makuragi town

The main statue is Yakushi Nyorai.

A stone statue of 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O is in the compound.

- quote
Kezou-ji Temple is located at the summit of 枕木山(456m) Mt. Makuragi in Matsue city, with the elevation of 456m.
This temple has a long and important history of Buddism in Shimane. It is said to be originally built in 825 by 智元上人 Chigen Shonin (holy priest) and was the temple of Tendai sect of Buddism at the time.
Later in the late Kamakura period, it was reconstructed as a Zen temple and prospered so much it became one of the most famous temples in the region.
After then, the temple had decayed as a result of a fire caused by the war.
The temple saw the light of the day again when 堀尾吉晴 Horio Yoshiharu, the feudal lord of Matsue at the time, decided to build Matsue Castle in 1607.
Since Mt. Makuragi is located in the spot superstitiously believed to be unlucky, the temple was restorated and became a temple for praying.
The sitting statue of Yakushi Nyorai kept in Yakushido Hall is the work of the late Heian Period and designated a National Important Cultural Property.
The gate of the precinct built in the middle of Edo Period is Cultural property designated by Shimane Prefecture.
From the observation platform, you can enjoy the view of Lake Nakaumi, Lake Shinji, and Mt. Daisen.
If the weather conditions are good enough, you can even see the Oki Islands in the distance.

Kokubunji 国分寺 Chikuzen Kokubun-Ji, Dazaifu
Kokubunji

4-13-1 / Kokubu, Dazaifu, Fukuoka

The main statue is Yakushi Nyorai
The statue was made by . Gyoki Bosatsu

- Chant of the temple

- quote
This is one of the Kokubunji Temples constructed nationwide under the orders of Emperor Shomu
Wood tabs related to census registration were discovered around this site, suggesting that there were related facilities for Chikuzen-koku Province, such as a provincial office nearby.
The surrounding landscape still retains some remnants of that era.
In the year 741, Emperor Shomu announced that he would build Kokubun-ji Temples for monks and
Kokubun-niji Temples for nuns all over Japan and place Buddhist scriptures in Shichiju-no-to (Seven-Story pagoda).
Thus Chikuzen Kokubun-ji Temple was the earliest built temple in Kyushu, completed inthe year 756.
Investigations of ruins of halls and towers have been done and partially maintained.
