The Namamugi incident (生麦事件 Namamugi-jiken)
also known as the Kanagawa incident and Richardson affair, was a political crisis that occurred in the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan during the Bakumatsu on 14 September 1862.
Charles Lennox Richardson, a British merchant, was killed by the armed retinue of Shimazu Hisamitsu, the regent of the Satsuma Domain, on a road in Namamugi near Kawasaki. Richardson's murder sparked outrage among Europeans for violating their extraterritoriality in Japan, while the Japanese argued Richardson had disrespected Shimazu and was justifiably killed under the Kiri-sute gomen rule. British demands for compensation and failure by the Satsuma to respond resulted in the Bombardment of Kagoshima (or Anglo-Satsuma War) in August 1863.

Yokohama’s Gumyoji Temple
Located within a relatively busy albeit, low-key residential shopping street, Gumyoji Temple is one of the largest and oldest Buddhist temples in Yokohama. According to ancient legend, it was originally founded in 721 (during the Tenpyo Era), and established by an Indian Monk.
Following on from this, it is said that this temple was later officially opened on the 10th of March 1044, and is believed to have been built by a ‘Saint’, (although most likely, a local Shogunate or high ranking official), by the name of Ken Hiroshi. Similar to most other historical buildings in Japan, Gumyoji Temple has undergone numerous periods of reconstruction however, many of its original artifacts, dating back to the Heian Period (794-1185), have been utilized throughout its long history. This includes its famous wooden Kannon (Buddhist statue), which has been designated ‘an important cultural asset of Japan’.

- quote -
Sasaki Takatsuna 佐々木高綱 (1160 - 1214)
was a Japanese samurai commander in the Genpei War, the great conflict between the Minamoto and Taira clans.
An infant at the time of the Heiji Rebellion (1159–1160), Takatsuna was spared the destruction of his family several years later. He grew up with an aunt in Kyoto, and joined the forces of Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1180, when Yoritomo called for aid against the Taira.
Takatsuna saved Yoritomo's life at the battle of Ishibashiyama, and aided in the destruction of the Taira following the end of the war. As a result, he was rewarded with the position of shugo or governor of Nagato province.
In 1195, Takatsuna retired to Mount Koya to become a Shingon priest. He left his son with his title, land, and all his material possessions. He is said to have died in 1214 in Matsumoto, Nagano (then Shinano Province). Nogi Maresuke was one of his descendants.
When depicted in tales or in art, Takatsuna is often shown racing Kajiwara Kagesue across the River Uji atop Shōgun Yoritomo's white horse, Ikezuki, to be the first to engage in battle at the 1184 battle of Uji.
