The temple is located on the top of a long slope.
The temple was founded in 1449 by priest 義慶 Yoshinori.
In 1563, the temple received more land from 徳川家光 the Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
In 1567, it was revitalized by priest 誓順 Junsei.
During fires in 1818 and 1894 the main hall was lost.
The temple was moved here around 1900 as the Fudo Hall from temple 鴨居山林光寺 Kamoizan Rinko-Ji.
In 1984, the other halls like the 薬師堂 Yakushi Do in the compound were combined under the name Saiko-Ji.
The temple has a very large graveyard and many cherry blossoms.


The statue of Fudo Myo-O at Rinko-Ji has been carved by Kobo Daishi Kukai.

sugi no seirei 杉の精霊 the spirit of the cedar tree
At 西光寺 the Temple Saiko-Ji there were three 大杉 very very large cedar trees.
Around 1805, the priest wanted to cut them down to get money. In the evening he saw three strange children standing there.
They held their hands, walked around the tree and cried before they disappeared.
A couple of beggers were camping below the tree and were awaken that night be a very cold wind. They saw a beautiful young man and two women walking around the tree but soon disappeared.
When they told their observation to the priest, he realized that this were the spirits of the cedar tree, who was more than 1000 years old.
When the villagers heard this, they collected money and begged the priest not to cut it down.
But they cut it anyway, When the first ax cut the tree, there was a lot of water coming out of the cut and they stopped.
But the 6 wood cutters involved in this became ill and died soon after.
The day when they had tried to cut the tree was the 4rth day of the 4th lunar month.
So this day became the day of the cedar festival.

. soroban boozu 十呂盤坊主 "the Abacus Priest" .
In the evening the priest from 西光寺 Temple Saiko-Ji could see a young priest using an abacus unter the kaya 榧 torreya tree.
This phenomenon is called "the Abacus Priest".
Some say it is a prank of 狸 a Tanuki badger.
Some say once upon a time there was a young priest often scolded by the old priest, because he could not use the abacus well.
Eventually the young priest hung himself on this tree.

chinshoo 沈鐘 the fallen temple bell
The temple bell from 西光寺 Saiko-Ji was crying every night:
"Shall I go to the sea? Shall I go to the river?"
The priest told it to go to the place it liked best.
So the dragon hook burst and rolled away and the bell sank into the nearby river.

The hanging tsurigane 釣鐘 temple bell of 真光寺 the Temple Shinko-Ji is a female bell.
The male bell fell into a river at 八幡新町 Yawata Shinmachi and was lost.
The bell had a ryuzu 竜頭 hook with a dragon.
The 龍王 Dragon King would be lonely without the bell, so it was left in the river.

Shusse Fudo 出世不動尊 Fudo for a good career
佛法山 Buppozan 東漸寺 Tozen-Ji

横浜市都筑区佐江戸町2240 / Yokohama city, Tsuzuki ward, Saedo

In 744 priest Gyoki stayed here in a small hut and prayed to Monju Bosatsu.
. Gyōki 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu (668 - 749) .

The temple was founded by 智運 priest Chiun in 1440.
The main statue is 文殊菩薩 Monju Bosatsu. and many students come here to pray for wisdom during the New Year season.
In 1633 it became the family temple of the local governor, 竹尾元孝 Takeo Mototaka (? - 1671)
and had a large compound.
Nearby is the Shrine 杉山神社 Sugiyama Jinja and Tozen-Ji was the related Buddhist Temple.
During the Meiji and Taisho period it was neglected and almost devastated.
Around 1971, the village parishioners decided to rebuilt the main hall and enlarge the compound.

横浜市都筑区池辺町2296 / Yokohama, Tsuzuki ward, Ikonobe

Probably founded in 1554 as a temple for Shugendo priests.
The main hall with the statue of Fudo Myo-O burned down around 1695, but the statue of Fudo was not hurt. So he got the name Hibuse Fudo and the temple became quite famous.

In 843, 無善和尚 priest Muzen started to live here.
In 1782, priest 宥覚 came here and renovated the temple.
In 1791, a 殿堂供養塔 special memorial tower was erected in honor of priest Muzan.
On top of the hill, after climbing many stairs, pilgrims can see a statue of Fudo Myo-O.
There are many peonies in the garden, more than 5000 plants, hence the name. When they start flowering in May, many people come to visit here.
Since 1987, the statue was called "Botan Fudo".

横浜市港北区新羽町2586 / Nippacho, Kohoku Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa

Founded by 勝賢僧正 Saint Shoken (1138 - 1196) in 1190 in Kamakura, in the valley 笹目ヶ谷 / 笹目谷 Sasamegayatsu.
He also founded 極楽寺 Temple Gokuraku-Ji in Kamakura and moved Saiho-Ji here in 1495、as a side-temple.
In 1649 the temple was awarded more land.
The temple was accessible via the river 鶴見川 Tsurumigawa.
The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai, a Black statue 「黒本尊」.

日切不動尊 Higiri"cutting the day" refers to the belief that Fudo would bring riches and good luck if one makes a wish and comes to the temple for a certain number of days, then when the last day is over (giri, kiri) the wish would be fulfilled.
A famous Higiri Fudo Temple is in Kumihamacho, Kyōtango, Kyoto.

秋嶠山 Shukyozan 地蔵院 Jizo-In 妙法寺 Myoho-Ji

茨城県桜川市本郷13 / Ibaraki, Sakuragawa, Hongo

The temple was founded around 800, when a priest from temple 大慈寺 Daiji-Ji built a cottage and placed a Kannon with 1000 arms there.
He called his retreat 晶屋精舎 Akiya Shoja. Later priest 慈覚大師円仁 Jigaku Daish Ennin visited there and decided to renovate the retreat.
He placed a statue of 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu, which he had carved himself.
The name was changed to 阿炬那摩山顕法憧園 Akiyamasan Kenhodo En.
Around 910, it was renamed 阿幾那摩山十輪院妙法寺 Jurin-In Myoho-Ji.
The buildings were lost to fire, but the statue of Jizo fled to the nearby swamp and was safe, now called
水縁地蔵尊 Suien Jizo Son.
Around 1090, 藤原範明 Fujiwara Noriaki made a vow to liberate 奥州 the Oshu region in Northern Japan. On the 16th day of the seventh month (lunar calendar) there was mando-e 満灯会 a ritual with lanterns on the top of the mountain to pray for safety.
Around 1460, the building was lost to fire again and in 1571 relocated to its present location in Hongo.
In 1649, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu bestowed the land to the temple.
The temple houses sokushin butsu 即身仏 the living mummy of 舜義上人 Saint Shungi Shonin. Many people come to venerte it.

The statue of Fudo Myo-O in the main hall is more than 60 cm high and very impressive.
On each side is one of the doji 童子 attendants of Fudo.
People come here to pray for hissho kaiun 必勝開運 certain victory and shogan joju 諸願成就 fullfillment of all wishes.
