The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

Minamoto no Yoshiie Hachimantaro 源八幡太郎義家 / 源義家 had this gemple built, together with
金王八幡宮 Konno Hachimangu.
The priest 円鎮 / 円珍 Enchin opened it in 1181 and named it 親王院 Shinno-In.
In 1202 the lord of the area, 渋谷高重 Shibuya Takashige changed the name to
渋谷山常照院円證寺 Shibuyazan Josho-In Enchin-Ji.

おぼろ夜の そらあきらけき 寺の内 心にかかる 雲とてもなし

Founded in 1533 by 三蓮社縁譽稱念上 priest Shonen as a hermitage with the name of 天地庵 Tenchi-An.
Relocated to its present place in 1611.
In 1623 it was granted more land by Shogun Hidetada.
One of the four 江戸浄土宗四ヶ寺 Temples of the Jodo Sect in Edo.
People who want to see the statue of Kannon must make an appointment.

Kawai, Senro [Senro; Bokusen; Usen; Tansō; Kyūsetsu Jōjin; Chigen Dojin]
Japanese seal-carver, scholar and connoisseur. He was the son of Kawai Sen’emon, a Kyoto seal-engraver.
He studied Chinese classics with Hayashi Sōkyō and became the pupil of Shinoda Kaishin (1827–1902), who followed the style of seals used by painters of the Chinese Zhe school in the 15th and 16th centuries; in this genre Senro showed exceptional ability. In 1900 Senro went to China, where he studied under Wu Changshi, with whom he had previously corresponded. Under Wu he learnt modern carving techniques. After returning to Japan and passing his family name to a pupil, he went to live in Tokyo at the invitation of the patron Mitsui Teihiyō [Takakata] (1867–1945).
Subsequently he visited China almost every year and concentrated on importing and studying Qing period (1644–1911) calligraphy, painting and culture. ...

At 天徳寺 temple Tentoku-Ji in 愛宕下 Atago-shita there is a demon roof tile with a tokin 兜巾 (ときん)Buddhist hood.
Once upon a time, there was a fire and the sparks seemed to set the roof in flames. From this roof tile water begun to spray and the fire was extinguished.

東京都大田区西六郷 2-62-1/ Tokyo, Ota ward, Nishi-Rokugo

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

The temple was founded around 730 by 行基 Saint Gyoki (668 - 749).
. 行基菩薩 Saint Gyoki Bosatsu (668 - 749) .
It was restored around 820 by 空海 Kukai Kobo Daishi (774 - 835) and became famous as 宝幢院 Hodo-In.
Around 1230, 善慧証空 Saint Shoku (1177 - 1247) restored the temple again for the 浄土宗 Jodo-Sect.
It became the first temple for the Nenbutsu ritual in Kanto 関東弘通念仏.
The Hall for Fudo Myo-O is to the right of the main hall.

At the temple 祐福寺 Yufuku-Ji there is a statue of 善導大師 Zendo Daishi.
Fishermen had found it in their nets and brought it to 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji, because they had seen this temple in their dreams.
It was later brought to Temple Yufuku-Ji.
Zendo Daishi, Priest Shan-tao from China. (613 - 681).
There is a statue of Zendo Daishi at Komyo-Ji in Kamakura, Kanagawa.

Nue is a monster beast with the head of a monkey, breast of a Tanuki badger, scales like a dragon, a tail of a serpent and hands and feet like a tiger.
At the temple 光明寺 Komyo-Ji there is a scroll with Minamoto no Yorimasa 源三位頼政 Genzanmi Yorimasa, who killed the Nue monster.

. Dainichi Nyorai Legends 大日如来 .
Around 1540, soldiers were near the temple 御嶽山 光明寺 Komyo-Ji. To prevent the statue of Dainichi Nyorai from being burned, the priest threw it into the nearby pond.
Later 大島四郎兵衛久成 Oshima Shirobei Kujo from 長尾村 Nagao village came to know of this, dug the statue out and wanted to take it with him.
On his way thie villagers from 西浦村 Nishiura begged him to let the statue be, since it was their mamori honzon 守り本尊 protector deity.
It came to a fight, but when the villagers from Nishiura got the statue and wanted to return, they could not lift the state and not move it.
When the villgers from Nagao tried to lift it, it was light and they took it back home, placed it in 大日堂 the Dainich Hall and venerated it as their protector deity.

In the Ninja village of Oshu there lived タカソトハノタケトシ Taka no Toha no Taketoshi.
He brought his son to 光明寺 Komyo-Ji to study and soon the son became a skilled teacher.
Later the son moved on to 比叡山 Hieizan.
The High Priest from Hieizan had a dream telling him a special person would come from the East, so he welcomed the son.
The son became known as 慈覚大師 Jigaku Daishi, said to be an incarnation of 観音菩薩 Kannon Bosatsu.

Kashima no Kaname 鹿島の要 Stone to suppress an earthquake.
Between the hill of the temple 北山光明寺 Kitayama Komyo-Ji and the temple 堤町日浄寺 Tsutsumimachi Nichijo-Ji there are seven boulders.
In olden times seven boulders came flying here from 常陸の鹿島 the Kashima Shrine in Hitachi.
The area is now called Kashimagazaki 鹿島ヶ崎 .

At 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji around 1682, at the burial of a farmer's wife there was a thunderstorm.
The priest 憲海上人 Saint Kenkai placed a kesa 袈裟 priest surplice around the coffin and threw a statue of Amida Nyorai toward the West.
The weather cleared very soon and the old cat of the temple died.
The statue of Amida had hit the eye of the cat.
Since then they never keep cats at this temple.

> On the border of 栗本郡 Kurimoto district and 野洲郡 Yasu district there was a large river.
At 三上山 Mount Mikamiyama it divided into two. The 南川 river Minamigawa became quite a deep river pool at 土山 Tsuchiyama.
In this river pool there lived daija 大蛇 a huge serpent, which caused a lot of problems for the local farmers.
During the time of the Emperor 嵯峨天皇 Saga Tenno there was a strong earthquake. When they asked a diviner about the reason, they learned it was the huge serpent which wanted to kill the Emperor.
The Emperor ordered the villagers to kill the serpent. Many hundred came and drove the serpent away.
This event gave reason for some local area names. To memorate it, the tempel 大光明寺 Komyo-Ji was built.

A stone with the imprints of a woman who had given birth is kept near the mountain ridge connecting 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji and 浅間山 Mount Asamasan.

In the compound of 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji at the lakeside of 福村 Fukumura village there lived a huge serpent under the huge matsu 松 pine tree.
Every day there were beautiful colors on the water, reflecting on the pine tree.

The main statue is a seated 如意輪観音 Nyoirin Kannon.
The temple is related to 金蔵院 the temple Kinzo-In.




The script is by emperor 堀河天皇 Horikawa Tenno (1079 - 1107), who was blessed with a son after praying here.
The son became 鳥羽天皇 Toba Tenno (1103 - 1156).

The duck became alive at night and devastated the nearby fields.

Terao is an old place-name in Tsurumi.

The date of foundation is not quite clear.
It might have been a priest hermitage since the Kamakura period.
The main statue is 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.
There are 40 Buddha statues in the main hall.

In the ground is Genpei Goshiki tsubaki 源平五色椿 a camellia tree with five different colors,
the only one of this kind in Japan.

宝蔵院の不動さん the Fudo statue from temple Hozo-In
This Fudo used to stop hasebune ハセブネ(馳せ船) the trade ships on the open see, which wanted to pass.
The villagers asked a Shaman for advise.
They were told to bring it to the nearby waterfall and venerate it there.

Ryōtsu city (両津市, Ryōtsu-shi)
was a city located in Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture.
On March 1, 2004, Ryōtsu and the other 9 municipalities in the island were merged to create the city of Sado. Since then, Ryōtsu has been one of the 10 subdivisions of Sado City.

茨城県つくば市上大島 / Ibaraki, Tsukuba city, Kami-Oshima





. 筑波山神社 Tsukubasan Shrine .

The temple was founded in 807 by Saint Tokuitsu 徳一大師 on his travels arount Mount Tsukubasan.
. Priest Tokuitsu 得一 徳溢 (?760 - 835) .

The buildings were destroyed by fire many times and eventually the temple was relocated to the West Side of Mount Tsukuba.

Fudo no kaya 不動の榧 torreya tree of Fudo
Around 1650,
when Saint 源範上人 rebuild the hall. the torreya tree was split in two by a stroke of lightning and a statue of Fudo Myo-O was found.
The tree has been growing there ever since and is seen as reimoku 霊木 a sacred tree.

Tsuchiura Daishi Fudo 土浦大師不動尊
羽黒山 Hagurosan 今泉院 / こんせんいん Konsen-In 大聖寺 Daisho-Ji

茨城県土浦市永国203 / 203 Nagakuni, Tsuchiura, Ibaraki

The temple was founded in 995 on request of 一条天皇 Emperor Ichijo by 醍醐寺成尊僧都.
The buildings were often lost to fire.
In 1685, Lord 土浦城主松平信興 Matsudaira Nobuoki (1630 - 1691) had some halls rebuilt.
In 1745, the area came under the regency of 土屋政直 Lord Tsuchiya Masanao (1641 - 1722).



In the temple ground is a small version of the pilgrimage to the 88 temples of Shikoku 四国八十八箇所巡拝.

Tsuchiya Masanao 土屋 政直, March 16, 1641 – December 23, 1722),
was a daimyō in Japan during the Edo period. Masanao's daimyō family was descended from Minamoto Yasuuji (Seiwa-Genji). The descendants of Tsuchiya (1585–1612) lived successively at Kururi in Kazusa Province; after 1669 at Tsuchiura in Hitachi Province; after 1681 at Tanaka in Suruga Province; and then, after 1688, again at Tsuchiura in Hitachi.
He was the Tokugawa shogunate's Kyoto shoshidai in the period spanning October 19, 1686, through November 17, 1687.
