The priest 白雲 in the 25th generation of 清泰寺 the temple Seitai-Ji once did not bring them back.
A few days later, a woman came and asked to have the bowls and trays back.
But the priest cut her outstreched white arms with a sword.
When the woman was about to disappear, a huge serpent with white cut-off arms could be seen.
Since then no more bowls and trays were given at the river bank.
At 清泰寺 the temple Seitai-Ji they keep the bones of a huge serpent.

Fujie Kenmotsu and the Story of the Iwaguma Dam
Around 270 years ago, when the Makino family was the head of the Nobeoka domain, the land in the Idekita area was higher than the river level. Water could not be pumped to this area, making it impossible to grow rice. The wide expanse of wasteland was called the "Japanese Skylark's Nest." The appeals of farmers in Idekita, asking feudal leaders to do something to bring water to their area, were not heard due to tight clan finances.
Looking upon the situation, Chief Retainer Kenmotsu Fujie felt sorry for the people and persuaded those who were against the idea to build a dam to bring water to Idekita.
Shogunate administrator of the district Kitaemon Ejiri excelled in irrigation and engineering techniques, and was appointed to oversee of dam construction. Construction of the dam first began in the Misu area, but was swept away a number of times during flooding due to the soft ground. They then decided to build the dam at the present location of Iwaguma instead, where the ground was more firm. However, difficulties continued to arise, and Kenmotsu was criticized and told by those against building the dam to stop construction. Other chief retainers did not think highly of him, and accused him of inappropriately using war funds.
Due to these allegations, he and his three sons were sent to the Fune-no-o Prison in Hinokage. His eldest son, who was in delicate health, died after less than six months in prison. Kenmotsu, mourning his son's death, also died after refusing to eat for an extended period of time.
Following Kenmotu's last wishes, Kitaemon Ejiri took over construction of the dam. Iwaguma dam, along with a twelve-kilometer-long waterway for irrigation, were completed three years after Kenmotsu's passing. A large amount of funds were spent on their construction, spanning a total of eleven years.
After the dam's completion, the Nobeoka domain saw an increase in revenue upwards of 300 koku (ancient unit of measurement for products such as rice). Additionally, those who receive the blessings of Iwaguma Dam today honor the graves of Kenmotsu Fujie and his son, which are located in Fune-no-o, Hinokage. A large number of union members from the Iwaguma Soil Enrichment Group worship at their graves on August 17, according to the old lunar calendar.
Today, people still hold memorial services there and express their sincere gratitude to Kenmotsu. In order to not forget their moral indebtedness to Kenmotsu Fujie and Kitaemon Eijiri, the citizens of Idekita built a temple dedicated to Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) to honor the two men. A memorial service is held every year on August 18 of the old lunar calendar.
In 1924, approximately 200 years after the passing of Kenmotsu Fujie and Kitaemon Ejiri, their achievements were publicly recognized and they were awarded the title of "Jyuu-go-i" (similar to the title of "Sir" in Britain).

Yabakei Gorge, Oita Prefecture 耶馬渓
The Yabakei Gorge is an area of outstanding natural scenery and beauty located on Kyushu in the north of Oita Prefecture, south of the town of Nakatsu. Formed over 2.5 million years by the Yamakuni River cutting through volcanic lava and tuff, there are numerous cliffs, caves, and rock formations that are particularly popular in the fall when the leaves turn.
There are more than 60 scenic spots and Yabakei Gorge is part of Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi National Park. There are hiking trails, walking paths, cycle routes, and hot springs in the area as well as cultural and historic sites.
At the northern end, known as Honyabakei, the river is spanned by the Yabakei Bridge, the longest arched stone bridge in Japan. It is 116 meters long, with eight arches, and was constructed in 1923.
Just a little down river is Ao no Domon, a hand carved tunnel through the cliffs. It was made famous in a novel by Kan Kikuchi, and with most legends, distinguishing fact from myth is difficult.

Susa Jinja 須佐神社 Susa Shrine, Izumo

島根県出雲市佐田町須佐730 / Susa, Sada-cho, Izumo City, Shimane

The Deities in residence are 須佐之男命 Susanoo no Mikoto.
and his wife, 稲田姫 Inada Hime (櫛名田比売 Kushinada Hime).
Also the parents of Inada-hime
Ashimazuchi-no-mikoto and
Temazuchi-no-mikoto

The shrine was founded in 776.
The priests of the shrine are said to be descendants of Ōkuninushi.

- quote
Susa Shrine is located deep in the mountians of Sada in Izumo.
According to the ancient chronicles, after the gods Susano and Kushinada got married at Yaegaki Shrine
and made Suga Shrine their home, they set off on their travels around the country.
When they returned to Izumo they fell in love with the area of Susa.
After giving birth to many gods and creating the country, Susano handed power over to his descendents,
and laid his soul to rest here.
Behind the main shrine hall is a giant cedar tree, which is said to be 1200 years old.
It has long been worshipped as a sacred tree, and it is believed to be the dwelling place of gods and spirits.
It has recently become a popular “healing” spot, as it has been named by a spiritual healer as one of the best energy sources in Japan.
There is a well in the shrine grounds, and it is said that Susano used the water from here to purify the area. Although the well is deep in the mountains, it contains sodium, and the water has recently been found to come from to the Sea of Japan.
The waters of the hot springs in the surrounding area also contain sodium, and are well-known for their high quality.
The area around the shrine offers some spectacular rural landscapes.
The pure water river alongside the shrine runs out into the Hiikawa River.
Mt. Sentsu at the source of the river is said the be the place where Susano descended from the Celestial Plain of heaven,
and it also features in the legend of Yamata-no-orochi, as the home of the eight-headed creature.

Suga Jinja 須我神社 Shrine Suga Jinja, Izumo

島根県雲南市大東町須賀260 / 260 Daitocho Suga, Unnan, Shimane

The Deities in residence are Susano-O and Kushinada Hime.

- quote
Suga Shrine [須賀神社]
is a little off the beaten path.
Japan’s First Capital
Ironically, this somewhat remote area is the mythological first capital of Japan, as denoted by this sign:

- Shrine Grounds
So what is about this relatively small shrine out in the middle of almost nowhere?
Why did we both going through all the trouble to get here?
Speaking from the mythological of the Kojiki, Suga Shrine is where Susano-o and Kushinada lived
after the defeat of Yamata no Orochi.
Upon arriving here Susano-o felt rather inspired and recited the first poem in Japanese literature.
This same poem is on a large rock just inside of the shrine. Roughly translated it reads:

In Izumo, where the clouds form,
I see a fence of clouds.
To protect my wife, I too, built a fence.
These clouds are as my fence.

From our perspective it is so cool to be in not only Japan’s first recorded capital (even if it is just a myth), but also the place where a mythical god recited the first poem in Japanese literature.

Ema of Suga Shrine depicting Susano-o and Kushinada

Just behind the haiden is the the hoden, the main shrine building,
where Susano-o, his wife Kushinada, and their child, Yashimajinumi no kami, are enshrined.

Yakumo Yama
Sometimes shrines in Japan have two parts; that main shrine rests at the foot of the mountain, but another part of the shrine that lies near the top of the mountain. The part of the shrine at the top of the mountain is called a okunomiya [奥の宮], and that is what we were hoping to get a glace of. In the case of Suga Shrine, the okunomiya is on top of Yakumoyama.
If you head back to the road with the signs for the shrine, you will see that that road it keeps going. You will need to follow that same road for quite some time before you see another sign on your left that will point you in the direction of Yakumo yama. It is not all that far of a walk, about three kilometers or so to reach the mountain, which albeit isn’t that big.
I encourage anyone going out that way to plan time for walking up Yakumo yama.
The surrounding landscape is really lovely and it is not a hard hike at all.
Take a few things with you for a light lunch and it would be a great outing.
