The Namamugi incident (生麦事件 Namamugi-jiken)

also known as the Kanagawa incident and Richardson affair, was a political crisis that occurred in the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan during the Bakumatsu on 14 September 1862.
Charles Lennox Richardson, a British merchant, was killed by the armed retinue of Shimazu Hisamitsu, the regent of the Satsuma Domain, on a road in Namamugi near Kawasaki. Richardson's murder sparked outrage among Europeans for violating their extraterritoriality in Japan, while the Japanese argued Richardson had disrespected Shimazu and was justifiably killed under the Kiri-sute gomen rule. British demands for compensation and failure by the Satsuma to respond resulted in the Bombardment of Kagoshima (or Anglo-Satsuma War) in August 1863.

The temple is located on the top of a long slope.
The temple was founded in 1449 by priest 義慶 Yoshinori.
In 1563, the temple received more land from 徳川家光 the Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
In 1567, it was revitalized by priest 誓順 Junsei.
During fires in 1818 and 1894 the main hall was lost.
The temple was moved here around 1900 as the Fudo Hall from temple 鴨居山林光寺 Kamoizan Rinko-Ji.
In 1984, the other halls like the 薬師堂 Yakushi Do in the compound were combined under the name Saiko-Ji.
The temple has a very large graveyard and many cherry blossoms.

The statue of Fudo Myo-O at Rinko-Ji has been carved by Kobo Daishi Kukai.

sugi no seirei 杉の精霊 the spirit of the cedar tree
At 西光寺 the Temple Saiko-Ji there were three 大杉 very very large cedar trees.
Around 1805, the priest wanted to cut them down to get money. In the evening he saw three strange children standing there.
They held their hands, walked around the tree and cried before they disappeared.
A couple of beggers were camping below the tree and were awaken that night be a very cold wind. They saw a beautiful young man and two women walking around the tree but soon disappeared.
When they told their observation to the priest, he realized that this were the spirits of the cedar tree, who was more than 1000 years old.
When the villagers heard this, they collected money and begged the priest not to cut it down.
But they cut it anyway, When the first ax cut the tree, there was a lot of water coming out of the cut and they stopped.
But the 6 wood cutters involved in this became ill and died soon after.
The day when they had tried to cut the tree was the 4rth day of the 4th lunar month.
So this day became the day of the cedar festival.

In the evening the priest from 西光寺 Temple Saiko-Ji could see a young priest using an abacus unter the kaya 榧 torreya tree.
This phenomenon is called "the Abacus Priest".
Some say it is a prank of 狸 a Tanuki badger.
Some say once upon a time there was a young priest often scolded by the old priest, because he could not use the abacus well.
Eventually the young priest hung himself on this tree.

chinshoo 沈鐘 the fallen temple bell
The temple bell from 西光寺 Saiko-Ji was crying every night:
"Shall I go to the sea? Shall I go to the river?"
The priest told it to go to the place it liked best.
So the dragon hook burst and rolled away and the bell sank into the nearby river.

The hanging tsurigane 釣鐘 temple bell of 真光寺 the Temple Shinko-Ji is a female bell.
The male bell fell into a river at 八幡新町 Yawata Shinmachi and was lost.
The bell had a ryuzu 竜頭 hook with a dragon.
The 龍王 Dragon King would be lonely without the bell, so it was left in the river.

The statue is about 6 meters high and weighs 11 tons. It was cast by 広田佳胤 Hirota Yoshitane from Fukuoka. It stands on one large rock and is the largest Namikiri statue in Japan.

The temple has been founded about 1200 years ago by 弘法大師空海 Kobo Daishi Kukai.

The time of a generation may pass before this can be made. One may begin it in early youth, and complete it only when youth is long past. Yet there are several in Matsue, men and women, who have made this tremendous pilgrimage, seeing all Japan, and supporting themselves not merely by begging, but by some kinds of wandering selling.
The pilgrim who desires to perform this pilgrimage carries on his shoulders a small box, shaped like a Buddhist shrine, in which he keeps his spare clothes and food. He also carries a little brass gong, which he constantly sounds while passing through a city or village, at the same time chanting the Namu-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo; and he always bears with him a little blank book, in which the priest of every temple visited stamps the temple seal in red ink.
The pilgrimage over, this book with its one thousand seal impressions becomes a treasure in the family of the pilgrim. ...

千ヶ寺詣
現今私の家に居る門弟の実見談だが、所は越後国西頸城郡市振村というところ、その男がまだ十二三の頃だそうだ、自分の家の直き近所に、勘太郎という樵夫の老爺が住んでいたが、倅は漁夫で、十七ばかりになる娘との親子三人暮であった、ところがこの家というのは、世にも哀れむべき、癩病の血統なので、娘は既に年頃になっても、何処からも貰手がない、娘もそれを覚ったが、偶然、或時父兄の前に言出でて、自分は一代法華をして、諸国を経廻ろうと思うから、何卒家を出してくれと決心の色を現したので、父も兄も致方なく、これを許したから、娘は大変喜んで、早速まだうら若き身を白衣姿に変えて、納経を懐にして、或年の秋、一人ふいと己の故郷を後にして、遂に千ヶ寺詣の旅に上ったのであった、すると、それから余程月日も経ったが、不幸にも娘は旅の途中、病を得て家に帰って来たが、間もなく、とうとう此度は、あの世の旅の人となってしまった、父や兄の悲歎は申すまでもなかったが、やがて、質素な葬式も済してそれも終った。
すると、或冬の事、この老爺というのが、元来談上手なので、近所の子供達が夜になると必ず皆寄って来て、老爺に談をせがむのが例であったが、この夜も六七人の子供が皆大きな炉の周囲に黙って座りながら、鉄鍋の下の赤く燃えている榾火を弄りながら談している老爺の真黒な顔を見ながら、片唾を呑んで聴いているのであった、私に談した男もその一人であったそうだ。戸外は雪がちらちら降っていて、時々吹雪のような風が窓の戸をガタガタ音をさして、その隙間から、ヒューと寒く流込むと、申合した様に子供達は、小な肩を皆縮める、榾火はパッと一しきり燃え上って、後の灰色の壁だの、黒い老爺の顔を、赤く照すのであった、田舎のことでもあるし、こんな晩なので、宵から四隣もシーンとして、折々浜の方で鳴く鳥の声のみが、空に高く、幽かに聞えてくるのである、夜も更けて十時過ぎた頃だった、今まで興に乗じて夢中に談していた老爺が、突然誰も訪れた声もせぬのに、一人で返事をしながら、談半ばに、ついと起って、そこの窓際まで来て、雨戸を開けて、恰も戸外の人と談をしているかの様子であった、暫時して、老爺はまた戸を閉めて、手に何か持ちながら其処の座に戻って来たが、子供等もあまり不思議に思ったので、それを尋ねると、老爺はさも困ったという風をして「何、実はこの間死んだ、己の娘が来たんだがの、葬式の時、忘れて千ヶ寺詣りのなりで、やったものだから困るといって、今この通り、白衣と納経を置いて行って、お寺さんへ納めてくんろといいながら、浜の方さ、行ってしまっただよ」と談された時には、子供達は皆震上って一同顔色を変えた、その晩はいとど物凄い晩なのに、今幽霊が来たというので、さあ子供等は帰れないが、ここへ泊るわけにもゆかないので、皆一緒に、ぶるぶる震えながら、かたまって漸くの思いをして帰ったとの事だが、こればかりは、老爺が窓のところへ起て行って、受取った白衣と納経とを、眼の当り見たのだから確実の談だといって、私にはなしたのである。

The daughter of a pious merchant from Sendai believed strongly in the 法華経 Hokekyo Lotus Sutra.
When she died she became a ghost and went to 身延山 Mount Minobusan.
When she (her ghost) was near 富士川 the river Fujikawa, she met a pilgrim doing the Sengaji Mairi. She tore one furisode 振袖 sleeve of her kimono and gave it to him with the quest to show it to her parents. He came to Sendai just on the 49th day after her death. Her parents brought the sleeve to the temple hall 榴ヶ岡釈迦堂 Tsutsujigaoka Shakado and buried it in a mound. This became known as the
Furisodezuka 振袖塚 Furisode Mound.
It is near a slope which is called Furisodezaka 振袖坂.

Once a young man helped to prepare the food for a funeral reception, when 淵の主 the Lord of the Riverpool came out and lend them to him.
He brought them back the next day and other people also came here to borrow them. But one day a greedy man brought back only half of them and the Lord of the Riverpool became really angry. They recited the Amida Prayer and he calmed down. But since then he never lend the trays and bowls for ritual food.
Maybe the Lord of the Riverpool, in fact the Dragon Deity, had moved to another place.

This legend is know in other parts of Japan.

the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. Located in western Kyoto, Japan, it was founded in AD 888 by the retired Emperor Uda. It is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto", a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ninna-ji was founded in the early Heian period. In 886, Emperor Kōkō ordered the construction of the Nishiyama Goganji Temple to bless the nation and propagate Buddhist teachings but he did not live to see its completion. Emperor Uda saw the construction to its completion in 888 and named it "Ninna" after the regnal year of the late Emperor Kōkō's reign. From 888 to 1869 it was traditional for reigning Emperors to send a son to the temple to take over as head priest when a vacancy arose.
After retiring from his throne, Emperor Uda became the first Monzeki, or aristocratic priest, of Ninna-ji. From then on until the end of the Edo period, the temple saw a succession of head priests of imperial lineage. . . .
888 (Ninna 4, 8th month): Construction of the newly created Buddhist temple of Ninna-ji (仁和寺) was completed; and a former disciple of Kōbō Daishi was installed as the new abbot.

It could only be stopped by crushing its eyes.

The Tengu from 愛宕山 Mount Atagosan and 比叡山 Hieizan often came to the great 六本杉 cedar tree of Ninna-Ji to rest.
Once a priest took shelter under the tree in the rain and saw two palanquins taking off in the direction of Atagosan and Hieizan. It must have been the vengeful spirits of people who died with a grudge and had become Tengu.
