At the temple 清泉寺 Seisen-Ji in Kitabatake there is 北畑の薬師 a Yakushi statue.
people hard of hearing will certainly be healed. To show their gratitude, they have to make an offering. They must find a stone with a hole, place a thread or a mizuhiki 水引 ceremonial paper cord around it and offer it.

At the temple 石薬師寺 Ishiyakushi-Ji (Stone Yakushi Temple) there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet of a horse. The horse came out at night and devastated the fields.
So the farmers put a stake into it to fix it and bound its legs with painted ropes.

hi no tama ヒノタマ ball of fire
At 治田村 Haruta village there was an ill person. The door to his sick room suddenly made a strange sound, ガタガタ gatagata, opened and a ball of fire left the room.
The ball first flew to the nearby graves of the family and then to the temple 薬師寺 Yakushi-Ji. Now the bell of the temple begun to ring.

There is also a very old Yakushi-Ji temple in
三重県伊賀市鳳凰寺245 / 245 Bōji, Iga-shi, Mie
dating back to the 白鳳時代 Hakuo period.

chi no deru ishi 血の出る石 a bleeding stone
The cornerstone of the pagoda of Yakushi-Ji is said to be bleeding. A stone mason wanted to split the stone secretly, when the blood of a baby came flowing out of it. The mason was quite surprized and afraid and run home, but he died soon afterwards.

In the afternoon when children were playing in front of the Yakushi Do Hall, a person with a shining body appeared and told them:
「お前ら、来いよ、来いよ」"Hey, you children, come on, come here!"
But the children became afraid and fled in panic.

The town of 水津 Suizu on Sado Island had a prosperous period when the ships to the North stopped here.
Once a ship stopped and had a traveller had a vision of Yakushi Nyorai entering the home of the 川端家 Kawabata family.
So they build a small hall and venerated the Yakushi sama.

十日町市 Tokamachi 松代町 Matsushiro

Once a young woman who had just married and entered a different family, became quite ill. Her father prayed to Yakushi Nyorai every day. He had a vision in his dream: He saw an old man with a white beard, telling him she would certainly be well soon.
When her father went to the in-laws the next day, he saw a hanging scroll of Yakushi Nyorai in their guest foom - and Yakushi looked just the same as the old man he had seen in his dream.
The bride got well soon after that.

Nikkoozan Tookooboo 日光山東光坊 - Tengu Tokobo. Toko-Bo from Mount Nikko
He is one of the
. 四十八天狗 48 Tengu of Japan .

There lived another Tengu, also one of the 48 great ones, called
Myoogizan Nikkooboo 妙義山日光坊 - Nikkobo, Myogisan (Myogiyama)

En no Gyoja 役小角 and Unpen Shonin 雲遍上人 once came to a 清瀧 waterfall in the 日光山 Nikko Mountains to practise austerities. Suddenly a black cloud hang over the waterfall and a terrible thunderstorm rattled and strong wind blew.
The two of them were 一心不乱 undisturbed by all this, sat down and said their esoteric mantras in deep quiet.
Suddenly the sky cleared again and now they saw a Tengu sitting in the branches of the large cedar tree. The Tengu faded from sight in no time.

In a highland called 古峯ヶ原 Kobugahara, from where the town of 鹿沼市 Kanuma can be overlooked, there is the shrine
Komine Jinja 古峯ヶ原古峯神社 (Furumine Jinja).
It dates back more than 1300 years. If was founded by a man from Kyoto, 隼人 Hayato,
and its deity in residence is
日本武尊 Yamato Takeru

This shrine is better known by its name of
Tengu no Yashiro 天狗の社 Shrine of the Tengu
People used to stay here for religious rituals and practise, so it is also called
Tengu no yado 天狗の宿 "The Inn of the Tengu"

The shrine has many memorabilia of the Tengu, big and small.
It also offers stamps of the Tengu, 天狗の御朱印 with 16 different faces of the Tengu.

There used to live many Tengu in the mountains of Nikko, and their boss was Tokobo.

Apart from Toko-Bo and Nikko-Bo there was the local Tengu

Kobugahara Hayatoboo 古峯ヶ原隼人坊 Hayato-Bo from Kobugahara
It is not quite clear if he is the person who founded the shrine.
Hayato may have been a disciple of En no Gyoja or a relative of
. Zenkibō 前鬼坊 Zenkibo, Zenki-Bo .
and his wife Goki 後鬼.

practised Shugendo rituals in Nikko and helped deepen the belief in the Tengu, who would protect people from misfortune and extinguish fires in the region.

There is a ceremony in Nikko where the participants receive large bowls of rice.

It is also called
tengu no goohan 天狗の強飯 large rice portion of the Tengu
..... One bowl contains 5,4 kilograms (一升五合) of rice.
This ceremony goes back to Saint Shodo Shonin (Shoodoo Shoonin 勝道上人)(735 - 817), who started the mountain worship in Nikko, connecting the Shinto and Budshist religion.

日光の天狗は徳川家康 The Tengu of Nikko and Tokugawa Ieyasu

Mount Nantaisan 男体山 (2484.2ｍ) in Oku Nikko had been first visited by Saint Shodo in 782. At that time it was called 補陀洛山 Fudaraku San, later changed to 二荒山（ふたらやま) Futarayama.
Kobo Daishi Kukai read the two Chinese characters 二荒 as にこう nikoo, and soon the name changed to にっこう Nikko. The Chinese characters then changed to 日光.



Legend says that Toko-Bo was in incarnation of 徳川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu.
His posthumous name was 東照権現 Tosho Gongen, but legend says he had also pondered the name of
Tookoo Gongen 東光権現 Toko Gongen (Deity Shining in the East)

Since his soul-Tengu was a newcomer, he tried to fight the older Tengu of the deep mountains of Nikko, but always lost ground.

When his memorial shrine, 東照宮 Toshogu, was finished, many people came to visit here and venerate the former Shogun (turned Tengu), so the older Tengu of Nikko were quite upset.
They played tricks on the visitors and caused much confusion.

The year turned to 1825, the time of 徳川家斉 Shogun Tokugawa Ienari.
His Minister, Mizuno Dewa no Kami 水野出羽守, made friends with the Old Tengu of Kobugahara, Hayato-Bo, who helped him to get rid of the other Old Tengu by putting up a sign forbidding them to come closer and not disturb the visitors coming to venerate the Shogun turned Tengu Toko-Bo. If they did not like it, they were free to move on to the other famous Tengu Mountains, like Atago, Kurama, Akiba or Hikosan.

As late as 1860, in advance of a visit by the shogun Iemochi, officials of the city of Nikko posted an official notice:
To the tengu and the other demons:
Whereas our shogun intends to visit the Nikko mausoleums next April: Now therefore, Tengu and other demons inhabiting these mountains must remove elsewhere until the shogun’s visit is concluded.

He is now venerated in Gunma at Mount Myogisan (Myogizan).

Myoogi Jinja 妙義神社 Shrine Myogi Jinja
It was founded in 537 and is thus one of the oldes shrines in Japan.
The Mountain Deity itself is enshrined here.
The Deity is venerated for protecting from fire, bring a good harvest and also for good business and prosperity. So many famous Daimyo Lords came here to worship and donate buildings and treasures.
日本武尊 Prince Yamato Takeru is also enshrined here.

This shrine is located near the eastern foot of Mount 白雲山 Hakuun-zan, one of the peaks of Mt. Myogi.
It is known for its bright colours and decorative ornaments.
The shrine building now is from around 1700.
At its gate are two Demon statues, one red and one in green, with tiger-skin pants.
This shrine serves quite a lot of deities and mountain spirits.

At the back of the main shrine is a small sub-shrine dedicated to the regional Tengu.

When Yamato Takeru climbed 白雲山 Mount Hakuun-zan , he founded a shrine to venerate the deity
Hagoso 波己曽（はごそ）神, and the mountain was named after it, 波己曽山 Hagoso-zan. This name later changed to Myogiisan.

In the year 1394 a high-ranking court official named 花山院 Kazan-In 右近衛大将藤原長親 Nagachika (? - 1429) renounced the world and became a Waka poet and monk, calling himself
Kooun Meigi 耕雲明魏 （こううんめいぎ）Koun Meigi
and built his humble abode at mount 華頂山 Kacho-zan in the forests of Kyoto, one of the 36 peaks of the 東山三十六峰 / 東山36峰 Higashiyama Mountain range.
After living there for about 10 years, he took of for a trip to the Kanto region and ended up at Mount Myogisan. The local people had great faith in him.
After his death he was venerated as
Myoogi Hooshi 妙魏法師 Myogi Hoshi , changing his name from
明魏 Meigi to 妙義 Myogi, and also changing the name of the Mountain range in his honor.

This Tengu lived at 金洞山 Mount Kondosan, the middle peak of the Myogisan range.
He is also called priest 長清法印天狗 Nagakiyo Hoin Tengu.
He is a kind of kaijin 怪人 phantom Yokai with special powers, swapping places from the persimmon trees in the village to the clouds up in the sky. He is very strong and once stopped a mountain slide during a huge rainstorm. There are various legends about him in the village.
His father was a retainer of the 小田原北条家 Hojo clan of Odawara and got killed. To revenge him, Nagakiyo practised austerities in the mountains to become strong. fter taking revenge, he spent some time at the temple 寛永寺 Kanei-Ji in Ueno, but then came back to Mound Kondosan.

His mask is called 魔除妙義山中之岳大天狗　Mayoke Myogi Nakanotake Dai Tengu
and helps to prevent evil influence.
At the bottom of the mountain is the Shrine 中之岳神社 / 中之嶽神社 Nakanotake Jinja.

比叡山十三代目の座主法性坊尊意僧正, he came here in 940.
He promised to help the people who live in this region.
「われは比叡山座主（ざす）尊意僧正なり。宿世の縁でこの山に住し、衆生を済度せん」

In the 今昔物語 Konjaku Monogatari (early 12c) there are 11 stories about Tengu. One is about a Tengu from India, who came to Japan via China, to obstruct the Law of Buddhism. It might have been connected to legends about the Garuda Bird ガルーダ（迦楼羅.

The Tengu from India followed the flow of the waters and rivers, from Hakata to the Setonaikai Sea and up the Ujigawa toward Hieizan.
比叡山の横川 Yokogawa at Hieizan had been founded by Ennin.
The Tengu choose to stay at the toilet of the temple.
The voices of priests reciting the sutras in the temple were to be heard, but the deities never came close. The voices reciting sutras came running down the river and past the toilet. As the Tengu form India listened to them all the time, he changed his mind and decided to help the Law of Buddhism. He choose to become a human with the name
Myoogu, Myōgu 明救（みょうぐ） Myogu.
He was the son of Imperial Prince 有明 Ariakira.
He administered the affairs of Mt. Hiei one year and died on the 5th day of the 7th month of 1020 at the age of 75.

At Togurayama there was a statue of Yakushi, and an old monk took care of it. But the the old monk died and Yakushi became very lonely. So he flew to the temple Hooonji 報恩寺 Hoon-Ji in 杉島 Sugishima hamlet to the large gingko tree いちょうの木 ichoo no ki .
When the priest came out the next morning, he saw a heavenly light shining from behind the gingko tree. He knew a deity had come down and worshipped the tree from now on.

Once the lord of Takato castle wanted to make a river to get some water to the castle. Near 荊口 Baraguchi the workers came to a huge boulder. So they went praying for help at the sanctuary of Yakushi Nyorai at 中屋 Nakaya. And then this boulder burst into two one night and cleared the place for the river to pass through.

The Yakushi Hall had been burned down by a fire and even the ground around it was burned. Only two heaps of dried grass had not burned. When the farmers took a closer look, they found the statue of Yakushi inside one of them. It seems the deity walked there all by itself.

Once upon a time
there lived a very wild and rough deity in the village and all had a hard time. But Yakushi managed to calm the deity down and had a Yakushi Hall build on top of the spot.
The villagers were still afraid of the wild deity. Sometimes the ground below the veranda of the temple rises to a mound, and whoever touches that spot will be cursed.

Once a man and a woman stayed over night in the temple. The woman had fallen down and uttered a divine oracle.
"The old priest here had once been the Lord of a castle in his former life. A young monk had killed the Lord. Therefore the relationship of the old and young priest here is quite un-normaland in discord. If they build a shrine for Inari, the Fox Deity, all will be well."
The two priests of the temple did as told and from then on there was peace among them.

松本市 Matsumoto

The Yakushi of 下金井 Shimokanai is said to be female and grant the wish for children. It also forgives いたずら all the bad deeds of children. But if grown-ups behave bad, they will feel her punishment.
Once there was a grown-up who scolded the children who threw mud ad the statue. That grown-up became ill soon afterwards.

Once the governor of Shinano, Minamoto no Shigeyuki 信濃の国司 - 源重之 (? - 1000) became an eye disease. He went to the hot spring 白糸温泉 Shiraito for healing and went to the nearby Yakushi temple every day. And indeed, his eyes were healed in good time. To thank Yakushi he had the temple rebuild a bit further down on the plain of Shimokanai.


Minamoto no Shigeyuki 源重之 (? - 1000)
an early Heian waka poet and nobleman.


He was designated a member of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals and one of his poems is included in the famous anthology Hyakunin Isshu. His remaining works include a poetry collection known as the Shigeyukishū (重之集).

And if you walk around seven and a half round the statue of Yakushi sama a ghost will show up, its hands hanging down, no feet and long hair covering the face. The ghost comes out right from the grave.

The ancestor of the Kuge family, one 久下甚九郎 Kuge Jinkuro, was asked by the landlord せらだ正頼 Serada Masayori to carry the statues of Kannon, Amida and Yakushi on his back and flee the village. On his flight, he was attacked by robbers and shot with a gun. But the bullet hit the statue of Kannon in his backpack and he was safe.

伊達市梁川町山舟生字鍛治屋場 / Kajiyaba Yanagawamachi Yamafunyū Date-shi, Fukushima



The local people call this hall 日面薬師堂 Hizura Yakushi Do, since it is located at the border between the hamlets of Kajiyaba and Hizura.
It is situated on a hill with stone steps leading up in the compound.
The hall has been founded in 1639.

There is also a statue of Jizo Bosatsu from 1997 in the compound -
「南無富多卦佐地蔵尊」平成九年 (1997).

On the way up to the hall there are many stone markers and statues.
One of them is the Cat Deity.

Once upon a time
in 根津村 Nezu village a 六部 Rokubu Pilgrim took a retreat 長命寺大日堂 in the Dainichi Hall of the temple Chomei-Ji, when many young cats gathered around him and begun chanting:
国分寺の「小太ばば」来なけりゃ踊りにゃならん
"If Koda Baba from Kokubun-Ji does not come here, we cyan't dance!"

After a while a huge monster cat (kaibyoo 怪猫) came down with a storm and begun a wild dance with the small kittens.
Rokubu hit the monster cat with his staff and she fled, splatting blood on the way.

Next day it became clear that the "monster cat" was in fact an old grandmother in the home of Kotaro in the hamlet next to Kokubun-Ji.
So Rokubu went to visit her and saw that the old hag had hurt her leg on the spot where he had hit the cat last night.

To save her soul Rokubu begun to pray to Yakushi Nyorai and in a short while the cat showed her true nature and fled to the mountain 尾野山 Onoyama.
When the family searched the house, they found the bones of an old woman hidden under the veranda.
To our day, there is a stone marker with the inscription Rokubu 「六部」 in the compound of Kokubun-Ji

Koyama no Neko Yakushi 湖山の猫薬師 Yakushi the Cat from Koyama

Once upon a time
there was a Yakushi Do Hall dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai in the village of 賀露（かろ）町 Karo-Cho, which had been build by 伏野長者 the rich Village Elder Fushino of Koyama 湖山長者.
He lived comfortable with many servants and one cat, well beloved by him and the maid servants. Fushino had taught his cat how to say prayers and live a benevolent life.
But his wife did not like cats at all.
(The story about the cat continues below.)

When Fushino died, there was nobody to say prayers and venerate at the Yakushi Hall any more. It declined rapidly.
Then one night, the villagers saw a strong light at the top of Mount Koyama 湖山. This happened for many nights in a row, so the villagers went up to the mountain top and there they found the statue of a Buddha sitting under a pine tree.

"If a Buddha is sitting here, it must be a blessed place for rituals. Let us take the statue back home to venerate it."
The young folks of the village brought it downhill and all villagers could pray to it now.
Then someone realized what had happened:

"This is the Yakushi Nyorai of Karo village. He must have felt homesick for Mount Koyama and come back to sit there!"
So they hurried to built a small hall for the statue and found a priest named 浄西坊 Kiyonishi Bo for the daily duties.

One day when priest Kiyonishi was saying his daily prayers he saw a light shining from under the statue. When he stretched out his arm to touch in, it was the mummy of a cat with red hair and its eyes where still shining.

That night he had a dream and a cat talked to him:
"I am the cat of the rich village elder Fushino of Mount Koyama.
But his wife did not approve of my living in their home and I was kicked out.
I lived in 因幡山 Mount Inabayma for a while. One maid servant of Fushino once came to search for me and we had a talk, but I stayed on. As a present, I gave a white envelope to the maid servant.
When the maid opened the envelope back home, there was a painting of a dog inside, and 10 large pieces of gold.



Fushino's wife was surprized, but soon had a plan.
"If the maid got 10 pieces of gold, I am sure they will give 100 to me, the Lady of the House" and off she went to Inabayama.
She stayed there over night, but when she opened the sliding door just a bit to have a peek into the other room, she saw a huge white cat, just ready to jump at her.
The lady was too afraid and could not move in her shock.
At this moment the cat that had lived in her home turned up too and said:
"Remember, you have always been so mean to me. Now I get my revenge!"
and the cat jumped to the throat of the woman and bit her to death.

(Now the legend goes back to Yakushi san and the story the cat told in the dream.)

One day I was walking near the fields when the area suddenly flooded and became a pond and me, not able to swim, was swept right into the middle of the new pond (Koyama Ike 湖山池), getting weaker and weaker as I struggled to stay above water. Finally I died.
My body stayed there and eventually became a small island, 猫島 Nekojima, "Cat Island".
The Village Elder had taken good care of me while I was still alive.
So when I died I did not leave this world, became a mummy and now are back to help others!"



Just then Kiyonishi woke up from his dream.
He remembered that a cat with red hair had come to his place to live here about 5 or 6 years ago. This cat used to put its paws together like a human being in prayer. This must have been the cat from the Village Elder, now become a mummy.

When he had reasoned so far, Kiyonishi jumped out of his bed, took the mummy of the cat, placed it in a small sanctuary and placed it at the right side of Yakushi Nyorai in his temple.

Since then, Yakushi from Koyama has been called "猫薬師 Neko Yakushi" "Yakushi the Cat".
And of course, in the temple hall there are no mice at all.

Farmers come here to get a special amulet that will keep the mice out of their homes and rice storage.
If something is lost and people come here with a prayer sincerely to find it, indeed, it will soon be found.

A lagoon separated from the sea by deposits from the Sendai River.

The Koyama Pond is located 6 kilometers west of central Tottori City in eastern Tottori, close to Tottori Airport. It was an inlet of the Sea of Japan, but became a closed lagoon when deposits from the Sendai River separated it from the sea. There are seven islets in the pond, and the largest, Aoshima, has a park with a well-equipped promenade and camping ground.

This pond, being 4 kilometers long from east to west and 2.4 kilometers wide from north to south, is almost a lake in size and is a sanctuary for eels, carp and other freshwater fish. They still practice a traditional style of fishing there, called "Ishigama-ryo," where fishers form a trap with large rocks and wait for the fish to enter.

Yakushigama, Yakushi no Kama　薬師窯 Yakushi Kiln



Wishing a Happy New Year 2014!



The name of this kiln dates back to a legend of Gyoki Bosatsu, who had built a small sanctuary for Yakushi Nyorai 薬師如来の祠, which was in the compound of Chugai Toen Company till the end of the Edo period.

It was said to be able to cure eye disease and removed to the temple Hoosenji 宝泉寺 Hozen-Ji, where to our day there is a festival in honor of Yakushi Nyorai, O-Yakushi San 「お薬師さん」 in November (from 8 to 12).

Since its founding the Yakushi Kiln has been protected by Yakushi san and has been able to produce many items that make people happy and feel well. Some are amulets to prevent eye disease.

The temple is famous for the statue of Shakyamuni, Reclining Buddha.
The statue is 41 meters long, 11 meters high and weighs 300 tons.

Now a temple famous for its cherry blossoms.



During the Middle Ages, 新井三郎盛久 the Samuri Arai Saburo Morihisa wanted to avoid the fighting and moved to 武蔵国豊島郡の志村庄 an estate in Shimura, usashino,
He developed the land and built 蓮沼村 the village Hasunuma (lotus swamp).
The village developed well and to give them a Buddhist protector deity, he asked 宥照上人 Saint Yusho to built the temple at the bottom of 志村坂下 Shimurasaka slope.
The grand-child of Morihisa had a special statue of 十一面観世音菩薩 Kannon Bosatsu with 12 heads made, and also a statue of 弘法大師空海 Kobo Daishi, maybe carved by Kobo Daishi himself.
