Tako Yakushi Do 蛸薬師堂 Takoyakushi-dō - Hall oF Yakushi and the Octopus
京都市中京区新京極蛸薬師東側町503 / Kyoto, Nakagyo ward, Higashigawa town
The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.

八軸のみのりのふみのたこやくしうちおさめたる十二大願
The temple was founded in 1181 by 林秀僧正 Priest Hayashi Hideo.
He received a stone from Hieizan, on which Dengyo Daishi had carved Yakushi Nyorai.
He build a temple in 二条室町 Kyoto, Nijo Muromachi, and called it Eifuku-Ji.
Around 1250, the mother of a priest named 善光 Zenko became ill.
She went to the temple to pray for healing, but did not get better.
The priest thought she wanted to eat tako 蛸 an octopus,
took kyoobako 経箱 a sutra box and went to the market.
He bought an octopus and put it into the sutra box.
He prayed all the time on the way back home to 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.
When he opened the box the ocotpus had changed into
法華経八軸の経巻 eight sutra scrols of the Hoke Kyo Sutra.
From the scrolls bright light flowed to all directions
and to the ill monther, who recovered soon after.
Since then, the temple statue was called Tako Yakushi 蛸薬師 Octopus Yakushi.

Every morning the body of the dragon on the gate of 永福寺 the Eifuku-Ji was all wet.
The dragon would go off to the nearby beach and swim.
To keep him in place, an iron wire was placed around him.
