Iooji 医王寺 Io-Ji, Ouchi

佐賀県唐津市相知町黒岩183 / Shiga, Karatsu, Ouchi town, Kuroiwa
The temple was founded in 1383 on request of 波多安房 Lord Hata Awa by 真空禅師 Zen priest Shinku.
More than 1000 monks lived there.
The present head priest is in the 41th generation.
Most of the buildings built by special craftsmen fron Hida were burned down during wars.
Only the main hall is more than 200 years old.
Near the gate is an old sugi スギ cedar tree of more than 450 years,
one of the 100 special trees of Saga.

koe 声 a strange voice
A plasterer from 内金 Uchigane hamlet walked over ノツコシ峠 the pass Notsukoshi,
when he heard a voice asking him to carry him over the pass.
He felt something heavy on his back.
The plasterer was quite afraid and started to run along.
When he saw 長篠の医王寺 the temple Io-Ji at Nagashina,
the load on his back suddenly vanished.

Once upon a time, the head priest from 医王寺 the temple Yakuo-Ji was a beautiful man.
But the young woman who worked as a helper in the temple was very ugly.
She tried to attract the attention of the priest.
She poured ritual oil for Yakushi Nyorai over her hair and dressed up.
When she appeared in front of the priest, he got angry and threw her out.
The woman became very sad and killed herself.
Soon after, a white light appeared near her grave. and the sound of an oil flame could be heared.
It sounded like mettai kuyashii メッタイクヤシイ "I am really frustrated now!".
This phenomen could be seen until the early Meiji period (1868).

The statue of 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai at 医王寺 the temple Yakuo-Ji was carved by 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu.
Once upon a time, a group of thieves came to the temple and wanted to steal the statue and other temple treasures.
At that moment, a priest suddenly stood in front of the thieves and drove them away.
It was in fact the statue of Yakushi, which had transformed into a human.
The statue now had a cut at the arm, where a thief had hit the priest.

Once a man found a votive tablet at 医王寺 the Temple Yakuo-Ji had fallen down.
He became worried about the man who had made the offering.
Later he learned that the man had been killed in Edo.
