聖観世音菩薩

そのかみの 祇園精舎を 名におえる 寺のみほとけ おがむうれしさ

This temple of the Zen sect was built on request of 德川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu
by 金地院崇伝 Priest Konchi-In Suden in 1619 and moved to its present location in 1639.
Suden had been abbot in 京都南禅寺金地院 Kyoto, Nanzen-Ji Konchi-In before he came to Edo.
The main buildings burned down in 1767 and 1811 and finally during the Tokyo Air Raid in 1945.
The present hall was built in 1954.

Imprtant advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Suden was the follower of Priest Tokurin Seishuku of Nanzen Temple of Konchi-in Temple in Kyoto, and in 1605 he became the chief priest, making him the 270th generation of chief priests of Nanzen Temple when he was only 37.
