Gofunai temples 50 and 51

Nr. 50 - Daitokuin 大徳院 Daitoku-In

墨田区両国2-7-13 / 2 Chome-7-13 Ryōgoku, Sumida ward
Shingon Sect : 真言宗



This temple was founded around 1630 by 宥雅法印 priest Yuga in 神田紺屋町 Kanda Konyacho.
The main statue is 薬師瑠璃光如来 Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai.

This is a funeral temple (bodaiji 菩提寺 and 位牌所) of the Tokugawa clan.
It was first built at Mount Koyasan and the name contains the
DAI from 弘法師 Kobo Daishi
and
TOKU from 川家 the Tokugawa clan.

In 1666 it was moved to 本所猿江 Honjo Sarue.
In 1684 it moved to its present location in Ryogoku, with a lot of land around it.
In 1760 it became a temple of the Gofunai Henro Pilgrimage.

Since the main statue is Yakushi Nyorai, people called it
Honjo hitotsume no Tora Yakushi 本所一ツ目の寅薬師
The first Tora Yakushi of Honjo

and many people came here to pray for healing of eye diseases.

Nr. 51 - Enmeiin 延命院 Enmei-In

Shingon Sect : 智山派



This temple was founded in 1444 by 義歓僧都 priest Gikan Sozu.
It received its name from the second Shogun, 徳川秀忠 Tokugawa Hidetada, after the destruction by 明暦の大火 the great fire in Meireki, 1657.
The main statue is 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.

The temple was originally located at 古谷野倉浜町 Koyano, but it burned down and was then relocated to its present location around 1620.

There is also a statue of 弁財天 Benzaiten, carved by 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi.
Kukai carved two statues of Benzaiten, the other one is at Chikubushima 竹生島 in lake Biwa.

This temple is related to the shrine 鳥越神社 Torigoe Jinja.
It was a sub-temple of 護国寺 Gokoku-Ji, former 江戸大塚護持院.
