Hichooji 飛鳥寺 Hicho-Ji, Fukaya
雨尾山 Amaozan 味光院 Ajiko-In 飛鳥(ひちょう)寺 (Asukadera)
三重県桑名市深谷町2386 / Mie, Kuwana city, Fukaya

The Kannon statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu.

- Chant of the temple
Despite the strong rainy storm in the Amao Mountain,
the birds come down flying from afar.

- quote -
Hichō-ji temple stands in Yamanoshiro area of Fukaya district in Kuwana city.
It lies on the highland from which a wide view of Kiso river, Nagara river, Ibi river,
Nagoya city, 濃尾平野 Nōbi plain and 御嶽 Mount Ontake can all be seen.
There are many Buddhist statues enshrined at the temple.
The main statue worshiped in Hichō-ji is a 181cm high Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon).
The other statues are:
statue of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi, 774-835, the founder of Shingon sect),
Dainichi Nyorai (Great Illuminating Buddha), Zenkō-ji style triad of Buddha Amida (Buddha of Infinite Light),
Batō Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon), Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon),
Koyasu Jizō (Bodhisattva Jizō who looks over children),
Fudō Myō-ō (Immovable Wisdom King).
The portrait of Kūkai, which is one of the temple’s treasures, is registered as Kuwana city Cultural Property.
In ancient time Hichō-ji stood in 坊ヶ谷 Bōgatani valley within Fukaya village grounds.
It was a famous Shingon school temple with 99.2ha of land and 12 sub-temples within its precinct.
Unfortunately many of its buildings, statues, sutras and documents were lost in a fire in 1571,
during the fights of the first “Great Unifier” of Japan Oda Nobunaga’s troops with the local daimyo.
In 1635 the Lord of Kuwana castle 松平定綱 Matsudaira Sadatsuna (1592-1652) visited the area.
When he heard about Hichō-ji’s past, he became sad and decided to donate rice fields to the temple.
Since 1660 the grandson of Sadatsuna – 松平定重 Matsudaira Sadashige (1644-1717)
every year donated money for the prayer.
In 1702 a samurai of Kuwana province called 南条三太左衛門宗親 Nanjō Santazaemon Munechika
climbed Mount Amao in search for a good place to enshrine a statue of Bodhisattva Jizō.
He obtained the statue some time before at Nishida village in Tamba province.
In the hut standing among the ruins of the old Hichō-ji temple Munechika discovered
a head of the Jūichimen Kannon statue buried in the ground.
The rest of the body was burned during the wars of 16th Century.
He found it strange and astonishing, so he decided to hire a Buddhist sculptor from Kyoto
and remake the lost part of the statue.
When the statue of the Goddess Kannon was finished he built a hall to enshrine her and living quarters for monks.
The statue of Bodhisattva Jizō, which Munechika was planning to enshrine,
was eventually placed at the Hichō-ji’s temporary hall in Okujō part of Fukaya village.
Since the restoration of the temple more than 100 samurai families from Kuwana province
were donating rice every month.
In 1869 the temple from Mount Amao and the Jizō Hall from the village were moved to the current location.
The reason was to make it easier for the believers to visit.
The temple is holding number 32 of Ise Saikoku Kannon Pilgrimage
and as such is very popular among worshipers and pilgrims alike.
According to the inscription on the stone monument, Mount Amao (Mount of the Rain Slope),
the name of the mountain on which Hichō-ji used to stand,
comes from a legendary pot that belonged to Tō-ji temple in Kyoto.
This old pot was called 雨壺 Amatsubo (Rain Pot) and the monks would pour water into it
and start to pray every time a drought occurred.
Next they would scoop the water and sprinkle it around.
It is said that when the drops would hit the ground it would immediately start to rain.

Kangakuji 勧学寺 Kangaku-Ji, Yata
走井山 Hashiriizan, 勧学寺 Kangakuji
三重県桑名市大字矢田266 / Mie, Kuwana city, Yata (Yada)

The Kannon statue is 千手観音 Senju Kannon with 100 arms.

- quote
According to the legend Kangaku-ji was founded in the times of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shōmu (724-749)
by 行基菩薩 Gyōki (668-749), a famous monk who traveled around Japan to preach to commoners.
Until 16th Century the temple was located at the bottom of the 走井山 Mount Hashirii on its northern side.
The main statue of Kangaku-ji is a statue originally enshrined at 海善寺 Kaizen-ji,
a temple which was located in the same area, and moved after Kaizen-ji was closed.
The statue representing Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) is 165.3cm high
and believed to be made in the 11th Century.
矢田市郎左右衛門 Yata Ichirōsaemon, a 16th Century Lord of 矢田城主 Yata Castle,
was known for a strong religious devotion towards this Kannon.
His castle, which was home for Yata clan, used to stand at the top of the Mount Hashirii.
But after the troops of Oda Nobunaga attacked the castle in 1577,
the head of the clan Yata Toshimoto was forced to commit suicide and the castle turned to ruin.
According to the historical records, Kangaku-ji was moved to the former location of Yata Castle
somewhere between 1615 and 1624.
A very religious man named 半弥 Hanya, a vassal to the Lord of Mino province 本多忠政 Honda Tadamasa,
donated a large gold coin and helped the temple change its place from the bottom of the mountain to the top.
The temple complex was finally rebuilt at the new place in the second half of the 17th Century,
at the times when 松平定重 Matsudaira Sadashige (1644-1717) was in charge of Kuwana province.
Between 1870 and 1880 the temple was closed and all the buildings fell into ruin.
But thanks to the local community of believers, Kangaku-ji was rebuilt and reopened once again.
Since then it became famous for a dragon painting on the sealing of the Main Hall
and the large size votive tablet.
The dragon is called 水飲み龍 “Water Drinking Dragon” and according to the legend
it used to sneak out and break the nearby houses in search for water.
People had enough of him and nailed him down to the sealing.
Even though the color of the painting has faded and it is hard to recognize the shape,
but the nail holes are still traceable.
Kangaku-ji temple’s complex consists of: the Main Hall,
太子堂 Taishi Hall (Hall devoted to Prince Shōtoku, originally from 1764-1772, rebuilt in 1991),
地蔵堂 Jizō Hall (Hall of Jizō – Bodhisattva who looks over children, travelers and the underworld),
the 鐘楼堂 Bell Tower, 庚申塚 Kōshin mound (a mound devoted to Shōmen Kongō – deity who protects against diseases),
the 仏足石 Stone with Buddha’s Footprints (made in 17th or 18th Century).
The main statue of Senju Kannon and the Stone with Buddha’s Footprints
are both designated as a Mie Prefecture Cultural Properties.
Every year on the 9th and 10th of August a ritual called 十日観音 Tōka Kannon (Kannon of the 10th day)
is held and many believers gather to participate in the prayer.

Andoji 安渡寺 Ando-Ji, Kuwana
星川山 Hoshikawazan, 安渡寺 Andoji
三重県桑名市星川448-10 / Mie, Kuwana city, Hoshikawa

The Kannon statue is 聖観世音菩薩 Sho Kannon.

- Chant of the temple
The stars reflecting on the water, looks like a calm river easy to cross.
天津星川瀬に影のうつる夜はやすの渡りと見ゆるものかな

This temple is designated as Cultural Property of Kuwana city. 桑名市文化財指定.

The main statue enshrined at Ando-ji temple is a 10th Century 38cm (14.96in) high Shō Kannon (Sacred Kannon)
made from a single piece of hinoki 檜材 cypress.
The wooden halo attached to the back of the figure together with the lotus pedestal are 57cm (22.44in) high.
It is assumed that originally the statue was painted to some extent but none of the coloring is left on it anymore.
Goddess Kannon is holding a lotus flower in its left hand.
The right hand is half raised to the chest in symbolic gesture of fearlessness 施無畏手 (Abhaya Mudra).
The face looks is gentle with a delicate smile.
The pattern on the robes of the statue faded away and it is hard to tell what clothes was this Kannon wearing.
It was probably decorated in a style typical for Esoteric Buddhism.
The simple carving at the back or the deep carving used in the shoulders area or at the bottom of the statue
is also typical for Buddhist statues of this size.
Together with the restored lotus pedestal and boat-shaped halo it reflects the style of 10th Century Buddhist sculptures.
Shō Kannon is not one of the 33 manifestations of Goddess Kannon,
but rather represents the root, unchangeable, pure, noble, sacred form of Kannon.
The main statue of Ando-ji was made from fragrance wood.
Since the 9th Century Tendai temples treated these small statues as second important statues at the altar.
Many of these beautiful sculptures were made and some even survived to our times.
Without any doubt the Kannon enshrined at Ando-ji is one of them.
Since ancient times Ando-ji was one of sub-temples of Tendai sect
and was known as 星川の観音さん Kannon of Hoshikawa.
Historical records mentioning this name were found inside a statue of Buddha Amida.
This statue, designated as Yokkaichi city Important Cultural Property, is enshrined in Zenkyō-ji temple of Tomida district.
A diary titled 作善日誌 Sakuzen Nisshi and written by 藤原実重 Fujiwara Saneshige mentions the name at least two times.
It states: 2nd year of Jōō period (1223) – offering of 100 sen for the roof of the Hoshikawa temple’s hall;
2nd year of Karoku period (1226) October – offering of 100 sen for a hot water boiling pot,
2800 rolls of Heart Sutra chanted.
These two entries tells us that at the beginning of the 13th Century there was a Kannon Hall at the temple,
and that water for making food was boiled.
Ando-ji has a goeika 御詠歌 (song of praise recited at the end of Buddhist ceremony):
The stars reflecting on the water (in Japanese hoshikawa, it is also the name of the mountain),
looks like a calm river easy to cross (in Japanese ando, it is the name of the temple).
Kannon of Ando-ji is especially known as Koyasu Kannon (goddess of childbirth and guardian of children)
and many women come to ask her for help.
She is also worshiped by local people as a fortune bringer and protector against bad luck.
Each year on the 10th of January a prayer called Hatsu Kannon-e (first Kannon prayer of the New Year)
is held, during which monk and the believers pray for safety of the households, good fortune and expelling of bad luck.
Another popular festival called Tōka Kannon 十日観音 (Kannon of the 10th day) or
Tōka Bon (the 10th day Festival of the Dead) is also held every year on the 10th of August.

Shoobooji 聖寶寺 / 聖宝寺 Shobo-Ji, Fujiwara
鳴谷山 Meikokuzan, 聖宝寺 Shoboji
三重県いなべ市藤原町坂本981 / Inabe city, Fujiwara town, Sakamoto

The Kannon statue is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon.

The temple was founded in 807 by Saicho.
Meikokuzan Shōbō-ji is a Zen temple which enshrines Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon) as its main statue.
Even though it currently belongs to Rinzai sect 妙心寺 Myōshin-ji branch of Zen Buddhism,
it was constructed by a founder of Tendai school of Buddhism Saichō (767-822) in 807.
Unfortunately in the second half of the 16th Century, during the march of Oda Nobunaga troops
led by 滝川一益 Takigawa Kazumasu (1525 - 1586), many shrines and temples in Inabe district
were set on fire and lost most of its buildings.
Shōbō-ji was no different. After set on fire in February 1580,
the temple founded by Saichō had lost its 1000 years history.
In the 17th Century an era of 250 years of peace and stability had begun.
This is also when Rinzai school Zen master 愚堂国師 Gudō Kokushi (1577 – 1661) rebuilt Shōbō-ji.
Its history as a Zen temple started in 1658 and continues as such to this day.
One more place worth seeing when visiting Shōbō-ji temple is its garden.
Originally it was created in Heian period (794-1192) and miraculously
most of it was saved to this day in its original shape.
By visiting the temple’s garden it is possible to experience the elegant design and taste of long lost antiquity.
