Japan’s First Capital
Ironically, this somewhat remote area is the mythological first capital of Japan, as denoted by this sign:

So what is about this relatively small shrine out in the middle of almost nowhere?
Why did we both going through all the trouble to get here?
Speaking from the mythological of the Kojiki, Suga Shrine is where Susano-o and Kushinada lived
after the defeat of Yamata no Orochi.
Upon arriving here Susano-o felt rather inspired and recited the first poem in Japanese literature.
This same poem is on a large rock just inside of the shrine. Roughly translated it reads:

In Izumo, where the clouds form,
I see a fence of clouds.
To protect my wife, I too, built a fence.
These clouds are as my fence.

From our perspective it is so cool to be in not only Japan’s first recorded capital (even if it is just a myth), but also the place where a mythical god recited the first poem in Japanese literature.

Just behind the haiden is the the hoden, the main shrine building,
where Susano-o, his wife Kushinada, and their child, Yashimajinumi no kami, are enshrined.

Yakumo Yama
Sometimes shrines in Japan have two parts; that main shrine rests at the foot of the mountain, but another part of the shrine that lies near the top of the mountain. The part of the shrine at the top of the mountain is called a okunomiya [奥の宮], and that is what we were hoping to get a glace of. In the case of Suga Shrine, the okunomiya is on top of Yakumoyama.
If you head back to the road with the signs for the shrine, you will see that that road it keeps going. You will need to follow that same road for quite some time before you see another sign on your left that will point you in the direction of Yakumo yama. It is not all that far of a walk, about three kilometers or so to reach the mountain, which albeit isn’t that big.

I encourage anyone going out that way to plan time for walking up Yakumo yama.
The surrounding landscape is really lovely and it is not a hard hike at all.
Take a few things with you for a light lunch and it would be a great outing.

Equivalent of a Japanese "Lourdes" for people with eye problems
Founded in 894.
Ichibata Yakushi Temple, perched on a mountaintop in Shimane Prefecture is the equivalent of a Japanese "Lourdes" for those with any kind of eye complaint, with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims making their way there every year.
A local fisherman found the sculpture of Yakushi washed up on a local beach. The current along the Shimane coast comes from Korea, so this is the probable source of the statue.
He took it home and prayed fervently in front of it, and many miracles occurred, the most relevant being his blind mother had her sight restored.
The temple was built on the mountaintop overlooking the coast, with expansive views of it, as well as views of Lake Shinji in the other direction. Being on a mountaintop there are steps leading up to it, 640 in all, but a road and bus now goes all the way to the top and few people climb the stairs, except once a year when a race is held which draws distance runners from all over.
Ichibata Yakushi Temple was originally of the Tendai Sect of Buddhism, but then became Rinzai Zen, and though the temple still maintains its Rinzai lineage, it became a Kyodan (a religious corporation, or church) and operates outside the Buddhist hierarchy.
To facilitate the journey for the pilgrims a railway line was built, and there are the usual line of souvenir shops on the approach to the temple. They have also branched out to specialize in children, and also pets.
Another money-making scheme is a couple of rental cabins within the temple grounds, built on a bluff with wonderful views, that are available for a reasonable fee.
The Ichibata-ji Kaikan (Inn) is open from mid-March to mid-November and has tatami rooms and futon bedding.

As well as the views from the temple, 84,000 statues of Yakushi Nyorai, donated by pilgrims and supporters, are well worth a view, as are 108 stone lanterns, also donations. 108 is believed to be the number of evil passions.
The temple buildings at Ichibata Yakushi include the main hall (Hondo) which was rebuilt in 1890, a meditation hall or Zendo which has zazen sittings on Saturday evenings and the Hatto or study hall that dates from 1807.

The bright red timbers and green copper roof of Inuyama Narita-san Temple make it one of the most photographed temples in Aichi Prefecture. The temple is a branch of the Shingon sect Narita-san Temple, based in Narita, near Tokyo’s international airport. Shingon Buddhism is a form of esoteric Buddhism that believes enlightenment can be attained in one’s lifetime through spiritual practice of mantras. Associated with the priest, Kobo Daishi, and the many temples he founded on holy Mt. Koya, Inuyama Narita-san is situated on a steep hill providing picturesque views of the Kiso River, Inuyama Castle, and on clear days, the skyscrapers of Nagoya-City.
The temple, near Inuyama Yuen Station, was founded in 1953 and contains a principal image of the powerful deity, Fudo Myou, holding a sword in his right hand, and a rope in his left. Almost every month a number of special events are held at the temple, including festivals and important events on the Buddhist calendar.
The temple is popular with drivers across Aichi, as it offers prayers and amulets for safe motoring.

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

The temple was founded in 1606 by 第九世源蓮社本誉上人利覚和尚, abbot of the temple 赤坂浄土寺 Jodo-Ji in Akasaka.
永井直勝 Nagai Naokatsu (1563 - 1626) layed the foundation, creating a temple out of the hermitage of the 永井家 Nagai clan.
The Nagai clan was the 信濃守 the Lord of Shinano. The area of his estate was called
信濃殿町 Shinanodono machi or 信濃原 Shinanohara, now called 信濃町 Shinano town.
The founder Naokatsu was a priest performing a ritual for sennichi 千日 1000 days and the temple was called 千日寺 Sennichi-Ji. The surrounding valley was called 千日谷 Sennichidani.
Around 1955, some parts of the temple compound and cemetrey were used for other purposes in the growing city of Tokyo.
The new temple was built by the famous architect Kuma Kengo.

In 1964, 10-year old Kengo Kuma visited Tokyo and stood in awe of the swooping, concrete Olympic stadiums designed by Kenzo Tange. These megalithic forms, which spiral off the ground in simultaneous expression and defiance of physics, captured the energy of rapidly industrializing Japan and inspired Kuma to become an architect. Today, Kuma’s architecture is recognized around the world, often in the form of museums and skyscrapers that display quietly rule-bending geometries engineered of discretely simple elements. Despite his immense portfolio, the seasoned architect — whose firm was recently tapped to design a new stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — shows no less enthusiasm for smaller scale projects, such as his firm’s recently completed addition to the Jodo Shu Ichigyo-in Temple in Tokyo.
Located in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, the Edo-era Inchigyo-in sits in the line of sight of numerous neighboring mid- and high-rises. Kengo Kuma and Associates took note of the frequent aerial view of the temple and designed a new, low-lying main hall covered with a large, gently inclined roof. From above, the roof appears to lift gently off the ground, sheltering the structure beneath with a sheet of half-cylinder aluminum shingles that recall traditional kawara tiling. This distinctive covering cantilevers out at an angle, casting a protective shade that beckons visitors in toward the building’s wood-paneled façade.
As in many of Kuma’s works, modern glass and aluminum often serve as the backdrop to visibly grained wooden elements. In the main hall of the Ichigyo-in, brightly hued cedar spreads generously throughout, the wood’s naturally rippling imprints adding an organic quality to a mostly rectilinear interior. In the basement, temple visitors can find an automated ossuary. Partitioning cedar-wood screens introduce intimacy and enclosure into the underground space while keeping it bright and open, allowing the ossuary to function as a community space that gathers people and facilitates connections with ancestors.

One night sometime in the Enryaku Period (about 1,200 years ago) the priest Kobo Daishi had secluded himself in this mountain area and was carving a stone (ishi) statue of the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy).
However he was forced to abandon his effort upon hearing a rooster crow to announce the daybreak. He left the mountain and the statue's right hand remained unfinished. This site is now designated as a special holy site along the Hokuriku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and, on account of the statue's missing limb, is said to have healing powers for limb disabilities.
The path to the mountainside away from the Main Hall leads to a spring called 'Kannon Reisui' and, in March 2006, the spring's water 'Fukui no Oishii Mizu' (Fukui's Delicious Water) was recognised as among the very best from Fukui.

Saga no In Kunshi 嵯峨の隠君子 / 嵯峨隠君子

He is Nr. 16 of the
. 日本の仏仙人16人 - The 16 Buddhist Immortals of Japan .

He was 嵯峨天皇の隠君子 the son of Emperor Saga Tenno.
He entered priesthood as a child before becoming an adult. As he grew older, his hair grew white while he kept his childlike figure.

Not much is known about him.

He lived during the time of Sugawara no Michizane (845 - 903) - Butsusen Nr. 15.
He lived as a hermit in 西山 Nishiyama. (Or maybe in 南山 Nanzan).
He liked to play the 琴 Koto.
He also got along well with the local Onigami Kishin 鬼神 Demon Deity.

老君子 / 隠れ若子

Saga was a scholar of the Chinese classics. He was also a renowned as a skillful calligrapher.
According to legend, he was the first Japanese emperor to drink tea.

南山白頭翁 Nanzan Hakuto Okina
Old man with white hair from Mount Nanzan
He was 98 years old and still had full white hair, a face fresh like a peach.
Nanzan is another name for 吉野山 Yoshinoyama.
The old man lived in a small hut, he was not a farmer nor a merchant.
He only had a desk and a bamboo basket.
He had no money and no food provisions.

He comes from Osaka, 摂津住吉 Settsu Sumiyoshi and practised religious austerities at 高安山 Mount Takayasuyama (488 m).
In 897 僧明達 the priest Myotatsu came to the mountain and in a cave saw a man sitting, wearing a white hat and white robes.
The man was alomost starving, so Myotatsu gave him five uri 瓜 gourds.
Asked for his name he replied
我は是れ生馬の仙人 "I am the Sennin from Ikoma!"
After entering the mountain this Immortal had never come back down to the valley

is a mountain on the border of Nara Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture in Japan. It is the highest peak in the Ikoma Mountains with a height of 642 meters.
Mount Ikoma
is a part of Kongō-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park. It is one of the most famous picnic spots in the Kansai region. On the top of the mountain, there are many TV towers for broadcasting to the Kansai region and Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park.
Mount Ikoma
was an important object of worship for ancient Japanese people. On the east foot of the mountain, Ikoma Jinja (literally 'Shrine for Mount Ikoma') has been extant since the 5th century. The mountain and the Hozan-ji temple near the summit were traditionally celebrated as national scenery and included in well-known woodblock series such as the "Sixty-eight National Views."

At 菖蒲沢薬師堂 the Yakushi hall
Also known as one of the Four Yakushi of Tsukuba, 筑波四面薬師.
本尊の薬師如来坐像のほか，同時期の作と思われる脇侍像と十二神将の一部，そして仁王像2体が現存している。
古くから「筑波四面薬師」と呼ばれて信仰を集め，かつては大変な参拝者で賑わったといわれる。平成20年から21年にかけて修理作業の際に胎内から見つかった墨書から，貞享4年（1687）に東光寺29代目別当寛泉によって作られた像であることが判明した。

Near the Yakushi of 台町 Daimachi there is a sanctuary for the God of Coughing. It used to be a shrine for Lord Kuruma Tsunatada, 車斯忠丹波守 (? - 1602) . He had lost a battle and tried to hide in the forest, but could not suppress his coughing, was found out and killed.
After his death, he became the local 百日咳の神 "God of the whooping cough".

The statue of Yakushi in the 高爪山の観音堂 Kannon Hall of Takatsumeyama was carved from some wood found on the beach.
Every year during the festival on the 18th day of the 8th lunar month, there is a strange "dragon lantern" light seen from the large tree in the compound.

Jizo Bosatsu　地蔵菩薩.

高勝寺 History of Kosho-ji
Priest Myogan, living in Daisen, Tottori, had a desire to meet a living Jizo (a Buddhist saint) and so, went on a trip to east Japan. He traveled and looked for Jizo, and eventually arrived at Iwafune. As dusk fell, he found a mountain hermitage in the middle of the rock, where a man called Igabo lived. Igabo kindly gave him a night’s lodging, and told him a living Jizo would come out on the top of the rock on the 18th and 24th of every month. The priest was happy to hear that and asked Igabo if he could stay at the hermitage for a while.

One day a villager visited Igabo to help him plow a field on the following day. Then a different villager came and told him that he wanted Igabo to thatch his roof the next day. Then another villager appeared and asked him to plane boards for his house, also on the next day. Then yet another villager asked Igabo to dig a well —you guessed it— the next day. Igabo answered “Sure!” to all of them. Myogan murmured, “It looks strange. He received all these requests, but how can he do everything in one day?”

The next morning, Igabo left the hermitage and began to do the work. The priest Myogan followed Igabo secretly. But soon Myogan was given the slip. So, he went around the places where Igabo should have been helping. To his surprised, Igabo was working very hard at all the places he promised.

Igabo came back to the hermitage at night. Myogan thought Igabo must be exhausted from the hard work. But he said in a happy voice, “Let’s get up early and go to see a living Jizo tomorrow!”

Early in the morning, Myogan and Igabo scrambled up the rocky mountain and reached the summit. Just at that moment, the sun rose and birds chirped. Myogan sat on a rock and prayed wholeheartedly that a living Jizo would come. Finally, brilliant light was released from the sky and a Jizo appeared. Myogan felt supreme bliss for a while. When Myogan came to, he found himself alone. Myogan was so happy that he didn’t realize Igabo had left.

After that Myogan returned to his homeland. And the next year, he came back to Iwafune to see Igabo. But he couldn’t find the hermitage Igabo had lived in. He asked some villagers about Igabo, but no one knew about the hermitage or Igabo. He was sad. And then he went to the place the hermitage used to be, and found a stone Jizo statue there. Myogan looked at the Jizo statue carefully, and suddenly realized that the face of the Jizo was exactly the same as Igabo. Eventually, Myogan understood that the living Jizo was Igabo himself!

Myogan established a temple on the rock of Iwafune and enshrined the Jizo statue in 771. After that, Myogan protected the temple and did his best for the villagers, much as Igabo had. Since then, the number of Jizo statues has been increasing, due to the donation of believers.

Tochigi Iwafune-san Kosho-ji Temple
Iwafune-san Rock looks like a boat left on the broad Kanto Plain.
The rock itself has been deified and is worshiped as a god. It is considered to be the place where spirits get together and come back to the next world. The top of the rock has been a sacred place for more than 1200 years and Kosho-ji Temple has been a great support to people living in all over the Kanto district.

There are huge numbers of Jizo statues in this temple. People believe Jizo bless barren couples with children, help mothers with safe deliveries and bless the children with health—all through divine grace. The origin of these Jizo statues is based on the folklore described below.

The highest point of the rock is 173 meters above sea level. The edges of this rocky mountain are all cliffs, with Jizo statues scattered around along the edges. ...

Later 徳川吉宗 Shogun Yoshimune had the main hall rebuilt, but it was lost in a fire in 1926.
The pagoda dates back to 1751.
