愛媛県今治市玉川町八幡甲200 / Imabara

- quote
The Temple of Good Luck
The temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi on the orders of Emperor Saga. The complex started off as a Shrine, but when Kōbō Daishi prayed here for safety at sea and stopped a storm with his prayers, Amida Nyorai appeared to him. Kōbō Daishi then converted it to a temple, carved the honzon of Amida, and enshrined it here.

In 861 Emperor Saga frequently sent Gyōkō (a priest from Daianji in Nara) to Usa in Kyūshū to receive an oracle from the God Hachiman. On one trip, his ship was wrecked in the area of this temple. Since the area around this temple resembles the area around Usa in Kyūshū, he simply climbed up to this temple and received the oracle from Hachiman here. Gyōkō believed that Hachiman was a manifestation of Amida Nyorai. The temple is now often called Katsuoka Hachiman by the locals.

The temple has been destroyed by fire several times and was deserted for almost a century, but has always remained as a favorite location for people offering prayers for safety at sea, as is Konpira Shrine in Kagawa Prefecture.

- quote
Ten Nights Bridge / Temple of Eternal Virtue
Eitokuji is located between Bangai Temple 7 and Temple 44. While the temple's name is officially Eitokuji, the name used by everyone is Tōyogabashi (Ten Nights Bridge) because of the legend associated with the bridge itself.

Legend has it that while in the area during the coldest part of winter, Kōbō Daishi went from house to house knocking on doors and asking for shelter. However, he was refused everywhere and ended up having to sleep under the bridge. He composed the following verse:
"They will not help a traveler in trouble - This one night seems like ten."

The temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi and a reclining image of him is enshrined under the bridge. Since the time it was constructed, the temple has been destroyed numerous times from flooding. Now it is made of concrete and Kōbō Daishi lies under thick futons. Both the Daishi and the temple belong to the nearby Eitokuji.

The statue of the reclining Daishi is popularly called Nojuku Daishi.

西津軽郡深浦町深浦字浜町275 / Hamamachi-275 Fukaura, Fukaura-machi, Nishitsugaru-gun

Founded by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro 坂上田村麻呂 in 807.

Engaku Hoin 円覚法印 in 868 came here on his pilgrimage to the Northern Region
and built a small Kannon Hall 観音堂.

The sacred light which priest Engaku started in the the temple has been kept alive for more than 1000 years to our very day.

The main statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 11-headed Kannon Bosatsu
better known as 澗口観音 Maguchi Kannon

- quote
Engaku-ji temple dates back to the 9th century. The great conqueror, Sakanoue No Tamuramaro, built a temple dedicated to the Kannon (the Buddhist God of Mercy) and put the eleven-faced Kannon into the temple at this place in 807. The eleven-faced Kannon was supposedly made by Shotoku Taishi (who was the greatest prince in Japan in the early 7th century).
After that, a Buddhist priest named Engaku Hoin came here from Nara and rebuilt the temple in 868.
Engaku-ji temple was founded at that time.

The temple was originally founded by Gyōgi.
The honzon is also attributed to him. It was originally called Sugazan Shōchiin Emmyōji, a name given by Prince Kakujin of the Omuro Ninnaji Temple in Kyōto. At one time this was a monastic community of seven shrines but these burned down in the wars of the 16th century. It was later rebuilt by the feudal lord Shigehisa Suga.

The temple houses an interesting statue of the Virgin Mary disguised as Mariya Kannon, which was worshipped by secret Christians during the persecutions of Christians during the Tokugawa Period.

As an aside, Matsuyama was the feudal castle town of the daimyō Hisamatsu. The castle can still be seen on Matsuyama (Pine Mountain).

While seeking a new spiritual place, Shoku 性空上人, a holy Buddhist priest, founded the Engyoji Temple on Mt. Shosha in the early Heian Period (10th century). This temple is one of the three most important training centers of the Tendai sect, and is called the Mt. Hiei of The West.

From the ropeway terminal you can walk up the pathway while flanked by Kannon statues of 33 pilgrimage sites. The clear and solemn atmosphere is physically and spiritually refreshing.

Juryoin 寿量院
Juryoin has the highest rank among the sub-temples, and records show the former Emperor Goshirakawa visited there. Its outer appearance is built in the traditional Shinnden style, but the inside was designed in the Shoin style. You can enjoy a “Shojin Dinner” with Shosha lacquer ware by appointment.
