01 Kongara Doji 矜迦羅童子

The temple was founded in 741 on request of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno.
The temple was built in the present location around 1890.
Many buildings were lost during WWII in 1945.
In the compound are 地蔵堂 a Jizo Do Hall and
不動堂 a Fudo Do Hall.

In the compound is abura-kake Daikoku 油かけ大黒 Daikoku to pour oil over his head.
It was most probably erected by 篤志家 the Atsushi family around 1965.

This is a system of regional provincial temples in many regions of Japan
(国分寺 Kokubun-ji for monks; 国分尼寺 Kokubun-niji for nuns).
It has been established by Emperor Shomu (Shomu Tenno (聖武天皇 Shōmu Tennō) (701 – 756) ).
The temple 東大寺 Todai-Ji in Nara, the "Great Eastern Temple", is the central Kokubun-Ji.

ponpoko yari ボンボコ槍 a spear making the sound ponpoko
On a piece of bamboo a hyotan 瓢箪 gourd and a fukunagashi 吹流し streamer are fixed and called ponpoko yari.
It is an auspicious peace. People also buy it to prevent fires.

They are sold at the Kokubunji temple 陸奥(むつ)国分寺 - 木ノ下薬師堂 in the hall for Yakushi Nyorai
for the annual festival on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month.
They represent the look up to the future and the look down to the past.

Kokubunji no kane 国分寺の鐘 the bell of 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji
Once upon a time, a thief stole the bonsho 梵鐘 temple bell of 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji.
When he came to Sugawa Ike 須川池 the Sugawa pond, he took a rest.
When he sat down, the bell begun to roll away, singing
"Kokubunji koishi ya popora poon 国分寺恋しや,ボボラボーン I long for Kokubun-Ji - popora pon."
The bell reached the lake and sunk down.
Since then, there had never been a drought.
When the water of the lake went low and ryuuto 竜頭 the dragon top of the bell came to be seen,
the dragon then took off to the sky and made rain fall.
If a person fell into Sugawa Ike 須川池 the Sugawa pond and was about to drown,
he called "I am from Kokubun-Ji, I am on my way to Kokubun-Ji!"
and thus was helped.

biwa hooshi 琵琶法師 Biwa Hoshi lute playing minstrel
A blind minstrel was on his way to Kyoto.
One night he stayed ad the Kokubun-Ji in Gochi, where someone stole his wallet.
He had to turn back to his native village.
Just when he was on 関川橋 the bridge Sekigawabashi, he bumped into someone and both fell down.
When the minstrel came back to his mind a little later, he could see with both eyes
and the thief had lost his eyesight. How strange.
Both went back to the Temple Kokubun-Ji and made an offering of the lute and the stolen money.

. bakeneko 化け猫 / 化猫と伝説 Legends about monster cats .
A kaibyo 怪猫 monster cat from Tang China wanted to come to Japan,
bringing fire to 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji.
It took it one night to cross the sea, but when the cat reached
Karagane oki 唐金沖 the sea at Karagane (Togane)
she was found out by a dog. The animals begun to fight heavily
and finally both became an island.
Now the islands are called Inujima 犬島 Dog Island and Nekojima 猫島 Cat Island.
