saken Fudo 左剣不動明王 "Fudo holding the sword in the left hand"
小動山 Koyurugisan 浄泉寺 Josen-Ji

神奈川県 鎌倉市腰越2-10-7 / Kanagawa, Kamakura city, Koshigoe

The temple was founded in 918 by Kobo Daishi.
Kukai carved a statue of Fudo Myo-O holding the sword in the left hand.
It became famous when 新田義貞 Nitta Yoshisada stayed here to protect the acces to Kamakura city at 稲村ケ崎 Inamuragasaki.
The temple is closely related to the nearby Shrine 小動神社 Koyurugi Jinja, where Yoshisada's sword was kept.
The warrior 佐々木盛綱 Sasaki Moritsuna (1151 - ?) prayed to the temple from his ship on the sea.

Shrine 小動神社 Koyurugi Jinja

The shrine is located on the Cape of Koyurugi.
Sasaki Moritsuna is said to have founded the temple between 1185-1189. After the Taira no Yukimori suppression, Moritsuna triumphantly returned to Kamakura. The local guardian deity, Omi “Hachiojimiya”, searched for a new place to settle in. One day, Enoshima’s God of wealth, music, eloquence and water was on his way to the shrine, and climbed Mt. Koyurugi since he was very interested in the scenery. Therefore the deity was moved to this land and was the beginning of the Koyurugi Shrine.
It is said that Nitta Yoshisada prayed for victory in the “Battle of Kamakura”.
