十一面観世音菩薩

- Chant of the temple
聖天と 身をあらわして福聚海  無量の誓い たのもしきかな

This temple was founded by 慈覚大師円仁 Ennin arund 850 in 平河町 Hirakawa. When Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to Edo, it was relocated to its present place at the top of the Kagurazaka slope.

In the compound is 聖天堂 the Shoten-Do hall for 神楽坂聖天 Kagurazaka Shoten (大聖歓喜天 Kankiten), a secret statue.
The statue of Juichimen Kannon 十一面観音 is in the Shoten Hall.
The statue of Yakushi Nyorai is called 大佛薬師如来 Daibutsu Yakushi Nyorai and placed in the second floor of 観音堂 the Kannon Hall.
There is also 銭洗い弁天 Zeniarai Benten in the compound,
where special ritual water to clean your heart, 洗心宝生水, is flowing.

The main statue is 薬師瑠璃光如来 Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai.

Ono no Komachi no zuka 小野小町の塚 mound of Ono no Komachi
Shakuyakuzuka 芍薬塚 Peony mound
Along the road from 安養寺 the temple Anyo-Ji toward 平尾鳥 Hiraotori there is a place where many stones are stacked up and red peonies are flowering.
This is the mound for Ono no Komachi. In former times, Komachi lived here and had planted the flowers.

At 安養寺 the temple Anyo-Ji there was a wooden statue of the founder.
Once there was a fire, but the wooden statue jumped out of the building and into the pond and prevented wounds from the flames.
Since then the tanishi mud snails in this pond to not have a butt.

a fast change 変化
On the 7th day of April in 1726, the priest in charge of the money of the temple 上田の庄の安養寺 Anyo-Ji in Ueda went through a strange set of changes in one night.
His head looked like a horse, his body looked like a dove with wings, one leg looked human and the other one like that of a bird. His tail looked like a serpent blowing fire.
The horse head ate three copper coins every day. The serpent ate three portions of rice every day.

The Tanuki from 安養寺 the temple Anyo-Ji killed the head priest and shape-shifted into his person.
He avoided being seen when eating. Then he killed the dog from a nearby store and ate it, but people observed this and his real features were revealed.
He left the temple in haste.
