豆腐地蔵 Tofu Bean Curd Jizo at Tofuku-in Temple
"The Tofu guardian deity of children" stands near the House of Aizome, right to the entrance facing Tofuku-in.
The statue of Tofu Jizo is about 107 centimeters high. There is the following legend about its origin:
- reference source :kanko-shinjuku.jp -
Once upon a time there lived a Tofu bean curd maker with wicked heart nearby.
Then all of a sudden, every day a Buddhist priest came to buy a piece of Tofu and put his money in the bamboo box. But when the Tofu maker looked at the money the next day, it had always turned into a piece of star anise. The man thought the priest must be a Tanuki or a Fox playing tricks on him, so the next time the priest stretched out his hand to put the money in the box, the wicked Tofu maker cut his hand with his long knife. The priest run away fast. The wicked Tofu maker hen followed the blood stains on the road and came to the gate of Tofuku-In, where a statue of Jizo Bosatsu was venerated and now had a bleeding arm.
Finally the wicked Tofu maker understood that Jizo wanted to teach him a lesson and from that day on, he became an honest businessman.
The main statue is in the back of the temple. A stone substitute is outside.
Nowadays people come here to rub the hand or arm of the Jizo statue, with the hope to heal their own wounds and get rid of pain.
