GANJOJUIN
When you enter the temple gate, there is a big pond with a bridge, which people cross to make pilgrimage. For the overall scheme of a whole hill at the back region centering on the precinct yard of the present “Ganjojuin temple”,
a style of temple that is peculiar to the Fujiwara era, known as Jodo style, is applied. It is one of the seven remaining famous historic spots in Japan such as Motsuji temple in Hiraizumi and Joruriji temple in Kyoto.

It is said that the temple was founded in 729, but according to “Azuma Kagami (Mirror of the East)”, a Japanese medieval text that chronicles events of the Kamakura period, the temple was established in 1189 to pray for the victory of Oshu Conquest by Yoritomo Minamoto.
It was proven that the five statues that have been enshrined in the temple since the time of its founding, namely, the Seated Statue of Amida-Nyorai, which is the principal image of the temple, the Standing Statue of
Fudo Myoo with two Youths (Kongara Doji and Seitaka Doji) and the
Standing Statue of Bishamonten, were created by Unkei,
as indicated by the signature plates of the statues’ creation that were set within the abdomens of the statues.
The temple has repeatedly been hit by the fires of war, yet it was re-established by a descendant of the Hojo clan during the Edo period. After World War II in the Showa period, these temple treasures caught the attention of Asakusa merchants who visited the temple every year on their pleasure trip. They made efforts and established a new main hall to protect these fascinating statues. The temple treasures, which have been protected by the chic status of Edo, were designated as national treasures in 2013.

Fudo is about 137 cm high, Seitaka Doji 81 cm and Kongara Doji 80 cm.
The group stands at the side of the main statue of Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来.
An inscription inside the statue 塔婆形銘札 (and that of Bishamonten) gives the date as 1186, made on behalf of
北条時政 Hojo Tokimasa.

Senyūji - Hermit in Seclusion Temple
Built on the orders of Emperor Tenchi by the local ruler Ochi-no-Kami Okikimi in the 7th century. Legend states that in early history the hermit (sennin) ascetic Abō recited sutras here for forty years before mysteriously disappearing one morning. The honzon was carved by a pious girl and became the guardian Buddha of Emperor Tenchi. According to another legend, the honzon was brought from Ryūgū (the Dragon King's palace) under the sea like the legend at temple 39.

Kōbō Daishi made this the 58th temple on the pilgrimage and the Dōjō of esoteric disciplining (Kegyō). Local people call this temple Osarei (carving while prostrating yourself) because of the legend that the girl prostrated herself once after every cut of the knife while she was carving the honzon.

The temple is located at an elevation of 1, 300 ft (390 meters) on the top of the mountain. According to Frederick Starr, the Niō (28 Buddha figures) and the main Buddha are all attributed to Unkei.

Along the path to the temple, there are thirty-three statues of Kannon, each with an aspect corresponding to a particular temple on the 33 temple Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.

The Front God Temple
The temple is located at the foot of Mt. Ishizuchi and was founded by 役行者小角 En no Gyōja while he was engaged in ascetic practices on Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan. During these practices, both Sakyamuni and Amida appeared to him in the form of Zaō Gongen. Because it has long been associated with the worship of the god Zaō Gongen in the Shintō tradition, the temple's buildings and shrines are all built in the form of a Shintō shrine. The temple houses a statue of Shaka Nyorai that is attributed to En no Gyōja as well.

According to legend, Kōbō Daishi once spent 21 days on the top of Ishizuchi Mountain performing a Goma ritual and fasting 断食修行 and the Gomonjihō 虚空蔵求聞持法 for 37 days.

Emperor Kammu 天武天皇 dedicated seven shrines and a pagoda to this temple through the Lord of Iyo Province. Frederick Starr notes that the Okunoin is 7 ri up the mountain and only accessible in the summer.

Ishizuchisan, Ishizuchiyama is one of the seven most important mountains for Shugendo and Mountains 山岳信仰. The mountain is 1982 meters high.

Mount Ishizuchi (石鎚山 Ishizuchi-san)
is a 1,982 metres (6,503 ft) high mountain on the border of Saijō and Kumakōgen, in Ehime, Japan. This mountain is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. It is the highest mountain in Western Japan.
Mount Ishizuchi is the highest mountain on the island of Shikoku and also the highest mountain west of Mount Haku. It is known as 'the roof of Shikoku' and the sharp, rocky summit resembles a huge stone hammer (石鎚 ishizuchi).

Mount Ishizuchi is an important object of worship in this region and one of the major centers of Shugendō, a sect of mixture of Shintoism and Buddhism. At the top of the mountain there is a small shrine called the Ishizuchi Shrine. This mountain is also known as one of Seven Holy Mountains (七霊山 nana reizan). There are several sets of heavy iron chains (鎖 kusari) leading up to the summit and this is the route many pilgrims opt to take, the longest set being 68m. However, it is possible to hike all the way to the peak along a trail which includes stairs and ramps with handrails.

The climbing season opens every year on July 1, and women are forbidden from climbing the mountain on this day.Between mid-October and mid-November, people come from far and wide to view the autumn colours.
The area around Mount Ishizuchi is a major part of Ishizuchi Quasi-National Park.

Founded in the 8th century, this Shingon temple is located at Takao, northwest of Kyoto. Kukai, founder of the Shingon sect, came here in 809 and stayed for 14 years.

After the temple burnt down the monk Mongaku persuaded Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa and shogun Minamoto Yoritomo to rebuild it, the work being completed in 1184. However most of the temple buildings were destroyed again in the Onin War. Only the Daishido survived the war and several of the current buildings date from 1623.

Jingo-ji Temple is nestled in the mountainous area to the northwest of Kyoto city. The area is particularly known for autumn colored leaves and is called the Sanbi area consisting of three regions: Takao, Makio and Togano-o.
Jingo-ji Temple is located on the slope of Mount Takao. Crossing Takao Bridge above the Kiyotaki River 清滝川 and steeply ascending through the tunnel of crimson leaves. There, an incredibly beautiful Japanese temple welcomes one.
The official name of this temple is “Jingo Kokuso Shingon-ji” and it derives from two temples. One is Shingan-ji Temple and the other is Takaosan-ji Temple, both of which merged in 824. This is the place where Kukai (or Kobo Daishi) founded the base of his Shingon esoteric Buddhism and is regarded as one of the three most important esoteric Buddhist temples along with To-ji Temple and Kongobu-ji Temple.
It has experienced devastation many times in the long history but was successfully restored each time. A number of valuable temple treasures are preserved up to today, including the statue of Yakushi Nyorai (National Treasure) and other articles from the Heian and Kamakura periods. Another popular point about this temple is the Throwing Roof Tile. From the garden in Jizo-in Temple, people throw a roof tile over the cliff side as far as possible, an action that is believed to ward off misfortunes.

鎌倉時代の末に編纂された『神護寺略記』に引用されている『弘仁資財帳』に「薬師仏像一躯　脇士菩薩像二躯」とあるのがこの三尊に当たると思われる。
資財帳とは、定額寺で作ることを義務付けられていたもので、弘仁年間の資財帳とは当時定額寺であった神願寺のものであり、この像が神願寺から高雄山寺に移されたと考えられてきた。

近年、
この本尊を高雄山寺に由来するとする説が出され、その結論はまだ定まっていない。

Kumamoto, Aso Town 熊本県阿蘇市

One of the priests of the temple Jingo-Ji, where women were forbidden to come, got involved with a girl named オカメ O-Kame from nearby and spent almost every night with her.
The other monks punished the two by digging a hole in the ground, put the two of them inside and rolled a large boulder atop of this living grave.
From this time on in the villags around the home of O-Kame whenever a girl was born it would not grow up to become a woman. The villgers became afraid and asked the monks to pray to forgive O-Kame, whom they now called お上神様 O-Kame Kamisama.
They made a wooden statue clad with paper robes.
Whenever some difficult would happen in the village, the statue would shed off half of the paper robes as a warning of it.

The Temple of Good Luck
The temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi on the orders of Emperor Saga. The complex started off as a Shrine, but when Kōbō Daishi prayed here for safety at sea and stopped a storm with his prayers, Amida Nyorai appeared to him. Kōbō Daishi then converted it to a temple, carved the honzon of Amida, and enshrined it here.

In 861 Emperor Saga frequently sent Gyōkō (a priest from Daianji in Nara) to Usa in Kyūshū to receive an oracle from the God Hachiman. On one trip, his ship was wrecked in the area of this temple. Since the area around this temple resembles the area around Usa in Kyūshū, he simply climbed up to this temple and received the oracle from Hachiman here. Gyōkō believed that Hachiman was a manifestation of Amida Nyorai. The temple is now often called Katsuoka Hachiman by the locals.

The temple has been destroyed by fire several times and was deserted for almost a century, but has always remained as a favorite location for people offering prayers for safety at sea, as is Konpira Shrine in Kagawa Prefecture.

The temple was founded by 盛源尊者 around 永禄年間(1558 - 1569). He worked in the village 木曽根村 and helped the villagers. The present head priest is in the 29th generation.
The temple is dedicated to Kobo Daishi.

Another saint close to the temple is 唯阿僧正（大雲一阿）大雲唯阿僧正.

大阪府高槻市霊仙寺町 / Ryozenjicho, Takatsuki, Osaka

According to the temple legend, it has been founded in the year 778 by 開成皇子 Kaijo, the son of Emperor Konin 光仁天皇 who became a monk.

桓武天皇 Kanmu Tenno, when visiting temple 勝尾寺 Katsuo-Ji in Mino, had a vision of a purple cloud of the river 女瀬川 with a mountain. When he told the dream to his son, he went there and found a beautiful waterfall and a rock as an incarnation of Fudo Myo-O. He founded the temple and this stone is venerated to our day.

By 1569 the temple had become quite rich and famous. But it was destroyed by soldiers around 1580. The head priest of that time 住職弘清 could just barely evacuate with some Buddha statues to the Tanba region.
Around 1610 the temple was reconstructed.

Settsu no Kuni 88 Henro Temples 摂津国八十八ケ所

Settsu Province (摂津国 Settsu no kuni) was a province of Japan, which today comprises the eastern part of Hyōgo Prefecture and the northern part of Osaka Prefecture.
It was also referred to as Tsu Province (津国 Tsu no kuni) or Sesshū (摂州).
Osaka and Osaka Castle were the main center of the province.

During the Sengoku period, the Miyoshi clan ruled Settsu and its neighbors, Izumi and Kawachi, until they were conquered by Oda Nobunaga. The provinces were ruled subsequently by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The regents of Hideyoshi's son soon quarreled, and when Ishida Mitsunari lost the Battle of Sekigahara, the area was given to relatives of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was from then on divided into several domains, including the Asada Domain.
Sumiyoshi taisha
was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (Ichinomiya　一ノ宮) for the province.
During the Sengoku period
Settsu became the main exporting centre of matchlock firearms to the rest of Japan.

In former times, the Kinki region was divided into five provinces:
山城 Yamashiro、大和 Yamato、摂津 Settsu、河内 Kawachi and 和泉 Izumi.

The pilgrimage to 88 Henro temples in Settsu was started by Saint Kekkai 月海上人 in the end of the Edo period.
During WW II many temples were burned down and this pilgrimage has become out of reach. But in 1980 it was revived.

Most temples can be reached within one hour from Central Osaka, which makes this pilgrimage a favorite with Henro Pilgrims.

Taihōji - Great Treasure Temple
This temple was originally the private assembly hall of a Korean monk who came to Japan in 701, the first year of Taihō. The statue of Kannon was his personal Buddha. Kōbō Daishi came here early in the 9th century and rebuilt it after it had fallen into disrepair as no one was staying here to maintain it.

Legend states that at one time the land in this area was inhospitable to growing crops. When Kōbō Daishi was passing through the area, the one lone woman who still lived here begged him for company. He changed the course of the river, bringing it closer to the temple. The river brought fertility to the land and other farmers quickly moved back to the area. Thus the woman had her company.

The sister of Emperor Go-Shirakawa was once chief abbess/nun here during his reign in the 12th century. The temple was destroyed by fire in 1873 but later restored.

The temple is located in the town of Kuma at an elevation of 1,600 ft. and situated in a calm and quiet forest of cedar trees. Note the beautiful Niōmon and a pair of giant waraji.

Frederick Starr notes that between Temple 44 and 45, there is a deep, dark cave where an enshrined statue of Fudō is worshipped.

The main statue is a Kannon with eleven faces 十一面観世音菩薩.
The founder of the temple was 明神右京・隼人, around 701.

There is a memorial stone for Matsuo Basho in the temple compound. Erected in 1743.
It is called
Shimoyozuka 霜夜塚 "Memorial stone of a frosty night"

薬のむさらでも霜の枕かな
kusuri nomu sarademo shimo no makura kana

I drink some medicine
but there is still frost
on my pillow

Written abound the 22nd (25th) day of the 11th lunar month, 1687.
During his travelings, Basho was ill at the home of his disciple Kitoo 起倒 / 欄木起倒 Atsuta.
Basho had a chronic illness of his stomach and Kito went out to buy some medicine for him.
This hokku shows the feeling of loneliness and desperation of Basho when traveling alone and depending on the kindness of others.
